(I haven't done one of these big ones in a long time, so hunker down.)
As I'm sure you've all heard me say before, I'm an import.
At one point I shunned message boards in their entirety. I got into Clix and people told me about HCRealms, but all the guys who told me about it were PowerGaming jerks, so I figured that the population here must amount to that and I had better things to do with my time.
Then I took a job where I could spend HOURS online and totally get away with it. Everyone did. Someone sent a link to me about a Star Wars Minis preview that I could only view on the WotC site and I got totally roped in.
For those of you who have never traveled in SWM waters, it's insane. If that link about the Hall of Fame Breakfast wasn't enough to curdle your milk, then I don't know what will. The worst of it is that there's a vocal minority who shout down anyone with an opposing, or even just different, viewpoint.
So, as a way of keeping sane, I basically started a thread like this. It was a place where the wacky, the silly and the goofy could take shelter from the good, the bad and the ugly. But then SWM died and so did the boards.
Someone linked me to something here and here I am.
I was immediately struck by how different it was. The vocal majority seemed to BE the wacky, the silly and the goofy.
Sure, there were some Trolls, (I never had the huge problem with VGA that others did, but apparently I didn't see everything that he did.) but the tone was really different.
And I saw the REP button and people's scores. Perhaps it's that REP had something to do with this. I dunno.
But if I'm on a board and there's a REP option I always put the Jedi Mind Trick in my sig to get more of it for fun.
But REP is weird. People probably REP for all kinds of reasons:
- They agree with someone
- They DISagree with someone and they REP someone who disagrees with them
- They think it's funny
- They think it's important information that someone found
- They like the way someone handled something or the general tone of their posts
When in GD, I go with the last one as often as I can. If you can disagree with someone without putting them or their point of view down directly, you deserve REP from me. If someone DOES put you down and you react with something other than ire or insulting them in kind, you deserve it as well.
And that's why I wouldn't want to see the insane REP that we've created go away.
I don't agree with you guys all the time. And there have been times in GD that I've seen Ogres take a shot or two at someone, but for the most part, we're not a bunch of bad guys abusing this power. And it is a power. I'm sure that new members see our REP and think "Wow, these are guys to whom I should listen or at least post like."
But, leaving that all aside, because when you get down to it REP is a broken popularity contest, (and you all know how concerned I am with being popular) Ogres are Ogres because of REP. REP GOALS = OGRE SLAP. And althought that may just be the source, it's kind of odd that Ogres are fictional characters like Trolls. And it's odd that people commonly refer to people who post with bad intentions Trolls. Now we could go on about the ambiguous and subjective nature of the term Troll, but I'd rather focus on the definintive nature of term Ogre.
Maybe Ogres are the anti-Troll.
And maybe that should be our REP GOAL.
Except me, of course, because I'm not much of a joiner and therefore barely even an Ogre. I can do whatever the hell I want.
Going anywhere at this point takes much planning and coordinating. As far as gencon I think if I had more games than heroclix in my repertoire I would be more worthwhile. Comicons would hold more appeal for me. Even that hold only so much interest. There are only so many bootleg DVD's a guy will want to buy.
