And it's down to just the Rhino. Definitely time to start talking about the next game! If you want to clarify how you have things working in your head, please do. Do we need to split the teams beforehand? As you described it (and you may have given it more thought since then), sounded like each player picks a team and the winner continues to play his team until it is eliminated. The loser picks a new team to play. So if the winner keeps winning, the loser could run through all the other teams in the game. I suppose we could split them up and whoever runs out of teams first wins.
If we are going to split the teams, it's be more fun to just have at it, as you say. I mean I'd have no trouble playing just the DC teams if you want to do it that way. I do like them. But who's to say I may not wat to play a couple of Marvel teams too?
"RRRRAAAAGH!" Rhino bellowed, "I am gonna wipe that smirk offa your ugly purple face, if its the last thing I do!!!" He followed up his promise with a blow to the chin that very nearly did exactly what he said.
As for the next game. It's a 300-400 game of 4 pieces of each team we deem appropriate.
The idea is to determine the best teams. Any team that wins 3 times in a row is retired until the champions round.
We can alternate characters within a winning team if you like. For example if you have the Avengers win one game. You can change Cap for hawkeye before you start the next one.
I tend to prefer Marvel and heroes so if we pick one by one I'll go for good guys probably quicker.
I know this is vague, any thoguhts you have would help greatly, I'm certain.
If I do nothing else this game, I want to at least finish off Despero (before he regenerates!) Rhino's AV is 8, Despero's DV is 14, so I need a 6. I roll a 7. 4 more clicks to Despero and he is DOWN! Rhino takes a click.
Rhino @@ K14 (4 clicks)
Obviously, my next turn's going to have to be a pass, so go ahead and take your next two turns next time you go.
Rhino saw Despero begin to waver a little under all the punishment he had taken. Pressing his advantage, he drew back and put all his might into a haymaker that would have wrecked an armored car. Despero stood for a moment, like a tree that has been cut and needs a last bit of impetus to make it fall. Then, like that tree, he fell. Hard.
"Awright," Rhino said, looking around, "Which one o' you is next?"
Well, as you know, I generally have no problem playing the bad guys, so if you grab hero teams first, I wouldn't really mind much. (Though there are a few hero teams I'd like to lay claim to.)
Do you think 400 points would be better? I was thinking about making a 300 point army for some of the teams, and it was a real challenge trying to decide who I'd play (and worse, who to cut). Not that it's an argument against playing 300 point teams; it would just require that much more strategy in team building.
Since for the most part, the winner will usually be carrying his team on to the next game, I don't think we necessarily need to split up the teams at first. Say you pick Avengers (not a real stretch there) and I pick Injustice League, and you win. I could then just pick my next team from all the other available teams. In case we retire a team after 3 victorys, then the victor can get first choice of team for the next game. (He'll probably be ready for a change.)
Or, here's a thought - there are 26 teams all told. We could split them evenly (after we pare out any that we decide won't work) and do a multi-round single elimination, though that could go on for a while. 13 games in the first round, all 13 winning teams proceed to the second round. Only problem with that is there's a good chance that one player will have more winning teams than the other. Perhaps in that case we can re-divide the winners, or the loser can pick some of his teams that didn't do as well as he thought the should have and give them the equivalent of a wildcard slot. Not sure if this will work. Also may not be what you had in mind, so I'm not that attached to the idea.
We also still need to decide how to balance the teams, so that teams with great TAs like Batman Ally or Mystics don't have too great an advantage while Wildcards with nothing to copy aren't too strongly disadvantaged. Do we disqualify some teams? You mentioned possibly not using the team abilities in the game, which would even things somewhat, but somehow seems to go against the whole 'which team is the best' question we're trying to decide. Maybe wildcards could be combined with one of the more "generic" TAs, so we could have a Minions of Doom/Skrull team and a Spider-Man/SHIELD team and a Legion/Police Dept. team.
Just throwing out ideas. We can hash this out some more.
Despero has fallen. His reluctant teammates are stunned. Despero was singlehandedly response for most of their victory so far.
One by one the remaining teammates rush Rhino. Selene is last and uses her supernatural abilities to their best.
"My what a lovely brutish specimen you are, Rhino. How I'd enjoy adding you to my collection," she says. With a look that's a cross between lust and lunch, she attacks him. Rhino, with all his strength, is left barely able to move.
"Yummy Rhino," Selene says and she licks her lips vampiriously, "I'll be back for more."
Ok as for the new game; let's look at what we seem to agree on.
1) 300-400 point teams. I'm ok either way on this. It'll be hard getting a 400 point Legion team (not enough members even with adding the necessary LE Supergirl) as it will be hard limiting 300 for a Defenders team (let's see Surfer, Dr Strange...no points left ). We could say 350 with 3 moves. If this is getting too many options let's stick with 300. I feel each team should have a range 290-305. No less, no more.
(Of course the same rule applies if it were a larger team).
2) We'll pick 1 by 1. No restrictions. This seems to be the plan you like best and it definitely works for me.
A quick note here. We may have to be 'loose' on some of our team choices. The LE Supergirl choice is a good example for a Legion team.
I also feel that we need to agree on whether characters should be duplicated. Should Batman be allowed in his team and a JLA team. In order to draw from the richness of characters I think ..no. In addition some characters should automatically be left for one team. Ex. Batman for Batman allies, Iceman and Beast should be Defenders since they have so few etc...
I'll leave this up to you but many of the lesser teams will not have enough points to play (Hydra, Skrull, SHIELD, Police...basically i think if they have 4 figures adding up to 300 points, or whatever number we agree on, they play, otherwise no).
Although it's not truly a fair system, I do think eliminating team abilities is for the best. Otherwise we might just have to eliminate teams. Any thoughts on other ways around this? I'd hate to not use the Batman Ally ability fo example. If we combine teams as you suggest to make the Wildcards ok it still goes against the 'best team' thing because now we are recreating those teams. The Legion is now, the Police Legion. I don't really want to eliminate the team abilities just don't know what else is fair.
As for the process of the game itself. Maybe your elimination idea is the best (although this will be a truly long game, like months long). My reasoning is this: let's say we do the Avengers/Injustice example. I win the first game. You're not going to choose lightweights to go up against this team that won. The second round you'll pick a big team again. If you lost again you'd likely pick another big team. So 4 big teams were used and you've used 2 of your teams to my 3. So to be fair I think we should be the following:
1) Each select teams 1 by 1.We should try to make it an even number of teams.
2) Let's say we each have 13 teams. Whomever got the roll to picks a number 1-13. Let's say 6. We each pick the 6th team on our list so it's truly random. Winner goes onto the next round. Next game the other player picks a number (we will always reshuffle teams so Avengers will not always be #4 on a list--hope this is clear).
3) End of round one we've eliminated half of the teams. Now we repick based upon the survivors. If one has won more games, he picks first. A tie means we roll for it. So just because you start out w/Injustice League in round one doesn't mean you'll end up withy that.
To speed up this game we might want a post 1 and post 2 so we can do a few games simultaneously.
"Timmy, your mother's here!"
"Awww! But we were almost done," Matthew complained.
"No fair!"
"Come on, Timmy," his mother said, "it's time to go. You can come back and play superheroes with Matthew again real soon, okay?"
"Okay," the two boys said sullenly.
Throughout the universes, superhumans felt an inexplicable shudder of relief as the boys put their figures away...until next time.
In other words, the game's yours. Rhino on his last click isn't going to do anything much.
I'm good with all of your thoughts on the next game. 300 points is probably best - as you say, too many teams would have trouble fielding a bigger army.
I did have an idea on how to work the team ability thing. I'd say the ones we need to limit are Mystics, Batman Ally, and maybe Superman Enemy, though the last pay enough for the TA that we may not need to impose the limitation on them. None of the other team abilities are game-breaking.
For those teams, only the figure with the highest point value on the board at any time actually gains the use of the TA, so if I'm playing a Batman Ally team with Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Huntress, Batman would get to use the TA, but not the others. If Batman were KO'd, then Nightwing (assuming he was the next highest point figure) would assume the TA.
I like this, as it still lets the teams get the flavor of the team ability without making it overwhelmingly powerful to have a whole team using the ability. What do you say?
Good ending. And good compromise for team abilities. Let's say for Superman Enemy that only one figure gets outwit at a time (unless you have one like Lex Luthor who has it already).
Al is in relative coolness. Next step is to pick. I roll 2 die and get 12. Hmmmm....probably my only good move in the whole game. See if you get a 12 too, otherwise I pick first.
I got a decent roll as well, 10. But first choice to you.
To make it perfectly clear, due to a shortage of "named" characters, we'll eliminate Police, SHIELD, Hydra and Skrulls. Suicide Squad only has two members, so by the same token also can't play. This leaves
Batman Ally
Batman Enemy
GLC
Injustice League
JLA
JSA
LSH
Mystics
Superman Ally
Superman Enemy
Titans
Kingdom Come
Avengers
Brotherhood
Defenders
FF
Masters of Evil
Minions of Doom
Sinister Syndicate
Spider-Man Ally
X-Men
That's 21, which means we'll need to drop one more. Probably Kingdom Come. With the Bat Sentry, you could make a 300 point team using 2 guys, but it's rather limited in choices. Do you agree?
