This brings up a subject I've been meditating on recently. when did it become "cool" to be an obnoxious, abusive jerk?

Don't become a cop, you have to let that stuff slide off your shoulders all the time. Someone flips you off the judges say "get tougher skin." Now if they say they did it because they were drunk....why then they have admitted to a crime and appropriate action can be taken.

See I never understood that. When I was younger and allot dumber than I am now, The cops would bust me all the time. I never ran, fought, yelled, cried, or any of that. Heck I've even thanked them for doing their job as the were putting me in cuffs.

Well, This one time, At Band Camp....

Recently I realized that the Band Camp they refer to is a fictionalized version of one I've vistied and where friends of mine worked summers.

So when they said "band camp" the one I imagined is actually the one they had in mind.

It can also depend on your judges. One county south of us they plead a lot of stuff out because they have a higher population and a backed up court system. Our county attny however is not the plea deal kind of guy. We end up going to court more often (plus mommy and daddy sure do like to hire lawyers for the college kids, even if the lawyer costs double the violation cost) I think the Judges hold us to a higher standard than in most other counties. Having said that, our department trains more than most every other state agency and 95% of our officers have at least a bachelors with many having a masters degree. I can count on one hand the number of cases that have went to trial that I have lost in the last 10 years. I have people that i have arrested who tell me that theirl lawyer will eat me for breakfast and cause me to lose my job, because he wins his cases. Little do they know that I have had trial with that lawyer multiple times and have not lost. I work in a college town of about 60,000 give or take.

Whenever I have to deal with cops, I treat 'em like they're my boss and I don't wanna get fired.

For me a little respect and honesty goes a long ways. I want to be dealing with you as much as you want to be dealing with me. I like to tell people that I would be perfectly fine if my career was boring every night of the week. Boredom means that generally crime is not a foot and that is better for society. Sadly that is not the case.

But then you've got those cops that you meet in a convenience store and you try to give them an affable hello or friendly nod and they kick in the "icy stare". You can't help but walk away from them thinking "Maybe that guy shouldn't have been given a badge."

You have to think about for every nice guy theres a thousand that are mean or rude to cops.. Let alone that their badge could get them killed... people skills dissipate when your life on the line.
