Rolling Stone Magazine co-founder and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame co-founder Jann Wenner has been removed from the HOF board after comments he made regarding interviews included in his upcoming book. They included Lennon, Jagger, Bono, Townsend, Springsteen, and other white men.
When asked why no female or black artists:
-“Insofar as the women, just none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level.”
-“Of Black artists — you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as ‘masters,’ the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level.”
I've heard many criticisms over time regarding Hall Of Fame selections. Makes one wonder how grudgingly many nominations and elections may have been made.
DIDN'T IT RAIN (Sister Rosetta Tharpe) - She played distorted electric guitar beginning in the 30's and 40's. This is from 1964, looks like a Gibson SG.
PS (9/19) Just to clarify, I believe both Nina Simone and Rosetta Tharpe were finally inducted in the last 4 or 5 years (a bit late, of course). Robert Cray, not yet.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe should have been one of the earliest inductees. Madonna shouldn't be in there at all unless they're honoring her for her time as a groupie.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
Wow! That is beautiful and the guitar solo toward the end was totally unexpected. Will definitely have to explore Blackbriar further. Never heard of this music before.
That link for the Godmother of Rock and Roll is an hour long documentary on her life, mind blower.
Definitely was an inspiration for Over My Head - King's X
I think Gretchen Goes To Nebraska by King’s X is one of the best lesser known albums ever. Over My Head is my favorite King’s X song. Never connected it to Ms. Tharpe’s music but now totally see it.
Getting back to Jan Wenner's articulation foolishness I wonder if he could manage the French language as well as Nina Simone does in this track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q7w7gk1JhQ

From 1970, Black Merda considered Black Rock pioneers, as well as, the originators of their own style of Black Psychedelic Rock. Black Merda - Self Titled (Full Album)

Interesting. With the exception of Hendrix, I was not familiar with any of them.

This is two weeks in a row where I was "scooped" in offering performers while I decided what songs to use. Last week Captain Beyond gave us Quicksilver, and this week Slicktrickyrick gave us Death (OK, that could sound better).
I have never heard of Black Merda, and appreciate being introduced to this early psychedelia. The vocals sometimes sound like Hendrix, but a bit more down to earth.
For Death, I was going to offer "Keep On Knocking" from the mentioned album For The Whole World To See. Interesting how their music was basically completely lost until a few years ago. KEEP ON KNOCKING (Death)
I also considered offering Living Colour and Radkey, but think Slicktrickyrick did a better job than I would have.
Bad Brains- I've mentioned going to the local Van's store and exchanging musical ideas with the younger people working there, several of them musicians. My first trip to the store, one of the people told me how much he liked the Bad Brains "Banned In DC" t-shirt I happened to be wearing. Getting over the shock of a twenty something knowing Bad Brains' music, that started a journey of exploring groups I had never heard of before. BANNED IN DC (Bad Brains)
Their wild swings from Punk to Reggae still fascinate me.
Eventually I bought the album it was on and discovered they were quite a good band that had other tracks that maybe deserved airplay a little more from this Texas band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVVuHP6PRCg
The previous songs are the only two that were considered KSHE classics for the premiere rock station in St. Louis, but I feel like a couple others should have been as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keasBJvUyng

Back in the 70s you heard what seemed to be essentially a morbid novelty song on the radio a lot.
Bloodrock scratched my 70's bluesy itch, especially liked the 2nd and 3rd track.

Strange, I wore my yellow "Banned In DC" Bad Brains t-shirt to work today with a pair of yellow Addidas, my co-worker said I look like a banana.

I definitely enjoy both aspects as well. When I was a teenager, I made a mix tape of just their reggae songs. But here's an early punk favorite of mine and it has to be this version, there many like it, but this is mine. How Low Can A Punk Get
I highly recommend both these documentaries, if you have never seen them.

Radkey was a rare gem among the sea of RW meh, I had never heard of them before.
Wishing for competitive Judge Dredd figures for Modern Age...WizKids are you listening?!?!
.........Radkey was a rare gem among the sea of RW meh, I had never heard of them before.
Radkey doing "Cat And Mouse" was my nom for the 2010-2019 Rock War #32. This was a particularly interesting contest because it was the first time that I had heard of Band-Maid, which is now my favorite group, perhaps (perhaps not) second only to Jimi Hendrix. After hearing Thrill by Band-Maid I also nominated "Domination" by them in the same RW.
So Cat and Mouse (my nom) won in the first two rounds. The three brothers were still in their teens (15,17,19) when the video was recorded. CAT AND MOUSE (Radkey)
"Thrill" and "Cat and Mouse" were then matched in the third round. I think I ended up voting for Radkey, but was really torn. I occasionly vote against my own noms when the competition is obviously better. One would have to have a huge ego to think that all their noms are the best songs in the world. Anyway, Thrill won and I wasn't too sad. If Radkey had been up against Domination, my vote would have been for Domination. THRILL (Band-Maid) DOMINATION (Band-Maid)
In the fourth round, Thrill was beaten by "Uptown Funk", which to me was shocking. Not a bad song, but to my tastes, too long, too average, too everything. Good beat, easy to dance to.... Everyone has their own tastes and I guess that's why we have to vote. The link here is NOT an endorsement, just equal time. I won't listen to it again. UPTOWN FUNK (Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars)
A damn good band that always seemed to be relegated to opening act. Joyce Kennedy definitely has plenty of Tina Turner level energy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZfVaL_faEQ
