The problem is then Marvel does to the Punisher what they do to all their characters. Namely, "You will act in accordance to what the plot dictates, not how your character would as written."
So the plot demands the Punisher sides with HYDRA for asinine reasons? Well, there you go.
Ever since Civil War, I've been calling this tendency "forcing square characters into round plot holes."
Also, Frank killing his own family to continue his crusade makes him gross and crappy, not cool. That's crossing the line. Maybe THAT was when he was out of character. I dunno. I just like the Ennis Punisher when Ennis isn't being ridiculous about it. When Ennis isn't trying to be funny, he's great.
I did not like Civil War Punisher either. That doofy outfit should be all the proof one needs. Murdering people in front of Captain America and a room full of heroes is another. You can play the 'he was preventing Cap from betraying his principles by working with villains' notion, but I don't buy it. I think it was just Millar going for shock value.
I hope, after the Nazi Cap debacle, they can actually let the villains be the villains again rather than continually polluting the heroes. Let them actually be inspiring instead of crapweasels.

"Angel Punisher"
That was just wrong all around for the character. "Franken-Castle"
Weird. Not the right type of storyline for the character, but I liked that storyline for some reason.
Okay, Hitman was about as good at comedy as Ennis gets. I liked it.
As far as Millar - I read 1.5 issues of Secret Service, and it makes me not want to see those Kngsmen movies... although I hear they're light fun and probably don't have 50 married couples mind-control slaughtering each other on a beach.

It is light fun for the most part...

But the mind controlled people slaughter each other in a church.
It's really well done though.

Absolutely disagreed. He didn't kill his family to continue his quest, he killed his family because they were puppets resurrected by The Hood, and thus perversions of his actual family.
Longest-Reigning Drunken HeroClix Champion - anyone got a liver?

I liked Franken-Castle far more than I ever thought I would. Snagged the Omnibus of Remender's run for $20 back in the day, and I've re-read the whole thing twice.

Ah, well, the puppet thing changes it. If his family were legit resurrected and he killed them, it'd be awful.

I read the first mini (haven't touched the new one as it has neither Millar or Gibbons). The ultimate message of Secret Service is actually great. And the hyper violence on the beach was kind of Millar using people's expectations against them.
Plus, you know, he wanted Dave Gibbons to get to draw a lot of action.
The movie loses some of that message, but makes it up in a different way.

The "punchline" of the comic is that dedicating yourself to public service is its own reward. And that you shouldn't help people/do the right thing for recognition. It was framed much more about public service because of the premise, of course.
Not an earth shattering position, but definitely something I enjoyed (like Huck) because it came from Millar and because of the timing of it.

I still can't figure out how Hydra managed to alter the magic spells on Thor's hammer well enough to allow Nazi Cap to lift the hammer.
You'd think something like that would have been noticed by someone in Asgard.
You know, I can't really think of a better way to completely nuke the memory of Spencer's Nazi Cap from orbit than to have Ta-Nehisi Coates take over the title.

Is his Black Panther good? I like his essay enough to pick up a Marvel comic for the first time in a few years if he can write good comics.
