9. For those of you that are whining about 15,000 not being enough. KISS MY ###! I go to college and work two jobs to support myself and just made over that amount LAST YEAR! So if that isn't enough money QUIT.The more pros and money grabbers that quit the greater my chances of gettin paid.
I think every single one of us would be thrilled to go somewhere and play VS for a few days and walk away $15,000 richer. However w/ a $100k prize payout for a PC, only 1 person will get to do that. Before w/ $250k in prizes and about 200 people playing, you could expect to average $1000 per PC (more if you were an above average player). This was enough to pay for the trip (and a little more). Now you are looking at $100k per PC, if the attendance remains at 200 or so, you are averaging $500 per PC. Not enough to cover your airfare plus hotel in some cases (or just barely in others). Don't get me wrong, $100k is a good prize payout. But $100k once a year isn't a big enough draw to keep me playing VS 12 months out of the year. Especially when I'm used to $250K 4 times a year.
Ok Jeff you say it's going to be up to the local stores now, fine. What has UDE done to contact these stores to 1. make sure they have the product and kits needed ON TIME. 2. The owners want to do HL in the first place?
I think UDE has a serious communication problem that if fixed quickly can save the game. You need to be in contact with the store owners. you need to promote VS. With each set have a mag come out in the store with a card from the set so people can see and touch the game. Advertise in Yughio mags.
At events you don't need to have 15ft tall statues of heroes just one big sign and maybe one item to take pix next too. Cut cost that way not taking away competitive play. You really need to advertise more to the public and you need to work more with the shop owners. They need an incentive to run events, players need incentive to play the game other than it being fun. I have 3 kids all young and knowing I can win $250 at a pcq makes me go every time. I can make money doing something I love.
Good luck with your new game, we will be here if you ever want to come back. And one of us will have our face on a card!
Actually, I think "forsaken" would be the right term.
As for having my face on a card, I thought we agreed that the life-size Starfire statue was the goal? Or did you have your eye on Cassandra Nova?
Ok. So on Day 1. I complained.....I was sarcastic, and I expressed my opinion. Little of that has changed. However.....
1) for the love of God, Day 2 posters I know we wrote a lot while you slept but so did Jeff. Read his responses to our topics and questions and half your stuff will be answered
2) How is it a good idea to get 400 people hopefully to 10k's and skip the LARGEST SINGLE EVENT IN THE COUNTRY AS A PC?!!?!? It isn't. Don't ask for it because if it happens I think the backlash would be even larger.
3) Yes Sydney was a nifty idea, yes UDE probably wants a take back....too bad, they already passed and they can't do anything about it now without having to deal with 150-200 American's with plane tickets that make them want to vomit. Complain that they made Sydney to start, don't complain that they didn't change the purse....if you think you have issues with trusting UDE right now.....if you start expecting them to cut purse sizes 2 weeks before an event you won't take them seriously ever.
4) Reset VS? NO!!!!!!!!!! You have two options if you did.....throw lots of new money into it (Which they obviously don't have) or get a huge grassroots movement to take it up there.....which you can't bank on. I know that UDE has essentially alienated a large section of its players, but don't kick them in the balls and then throw them in a dark room.
5) Half of the problem UDE faced was giving away both cash and product. As a team we could legitiamately buy 3 boxes, a bunch of singles, and use our PCQ winnings to fill out anything we needed from new sets. If UDE gave away more free packs and boxes it would just make it easier for me not to buy. The whole idea here in the change is to increase store bought VS. to put money back into the game, so it can get back to you later. I know it sucks to buy at high prices, but if you care about the game you will do it anyways. I have always bought 1-2 boxes from each set regardless from PwrDragon. Could I get it hella cheaper online? Absolutely...but he supports VS. and I will support him. If your local place doesn't carry VS. get 5 guys together, walk in there and say....we will buy a couple boxes each set if you run City Championships. The prospect of you buying 5-10 boxes of each set between you guys will be enough for him to see dollar signs.

Yeah, I was never a top player, but I paid for the trip from winnings nearly every time. Now I can't really expect to do that, and as a result I'm either going to have to treat PCs as vacations or not bother.
Could not agree more. This all seems like terribly poor planning. What changed from September to February to have the OP plans so drastically diminished? From what I can tell the biggest change was UDE ignoring us! You can't tell me that in the last 5 months things changed that much from a customer point of view. It seems like UDE is just dropping the ball in numerous ways of late and the game can't really afford that. If VS started out w/ a strong hobby league and some $100K PCs then maybe it would have been seen as a great sign. However they already have players expecting large prize payouts and have burned a ton of bridges at hobby game stores. These changes might keep VS around but the game will never recover from it.
This is EXACTLY my point. The name "VS" has already burnt far too many bridges for people to try picking it up. If UDE reorganized, fixed what they thought needed fixing, and more importantly, got to change the name, they'd have a second lease on life. Even if they left the mechanics ENTIRELY alone, they would at least be able to get a fan base not used to $250K per PC (do you know how many games I've played that people would absolutly drool over a $100K prize pool? The answer is most). Hell, there were 280 that travelled from all across the US where the top prize was a highly detailed replication of Samurai armor and a chance to have your deck affect L5Rs "Storyline".
Right now players have unrealistic expectations for a non-profitable game; and store owners have the mentality that "VS" = "Non-profitable". On the other hand, if UDE backed off, came back with another Superhero game... I mean, UDE has a good reputation for making some profitable games (see WOW and Yughioh). Stores would give this "fresh new game" the benefits of the doubt. And if they did things well, who knows, it could be the breakthrough sensation you are looking for.
Looking at those who responded, I agree that I don't particularly want it to end and restart; but that at least is a better option than it ending entirely. I think this is the best limited game, ever, period... and I love Superheros and superpowers and what not. But I want it to be like Magic (or at least WOW) where every city has regular tournies on a weekly basis, and in my dream world it'd be just like Magic where I can get a pickup game somewhere in town 7 days a week.
nomral 10k attendance was 100 people, average pc attendence was 300, So if you only have X amount of cash to provide for prize, wouldnt more 10ks make more sense then 1 big PC?
qft
but what is the draw power for the $10Ks across the country. Will yo ube able/ willing to pay for gas/ airfaire to travel to the other coast for a slim chance at $2500? Or if we bumped it up to $40K would that make it easier for you to travel?
I enjoy playing Vs. competitively. With this "OP" announcement, they have made it very clear that they think it will be more profitable supporting the casual crowd. Although it's probably a necessary business move on their part, they clearly chose to abandon a segment of their consumers. If you like playing Vs. at a competitive level, please do not support UDE in dumping you as a customer. If they believe the way the money is to be made through casual and semi-casual players, let them prove that. Use your consumer dollars elsewhere and see if it'll make them reconsider their business position.

On the flipside ... how can UDE afford to pay it's players an average 1000 dollars each to attend events?
3. I would like more detailed info on the ratings system. I think that they should be reset because when Points mattered I did not care about ratings and would try decks that I might not have otherwise. Some players have mentioned this earlier.
I'm not entirely sure why everyone is in a big huff about this. There aren't going to be any more PCs after Indy, so the ratings invite is irrelevant. Basically, it seems like they are just including this rating invite thing for Indy, because A) They want people to play at City Champs, and B) to make it easier for those who want to qualify for Indy to do so.
Sigh...this is all a bit sad. As others have said, the timing is really bad. I was talking to Tommy Ashton last night, and I think that both of us would have gone to Sydney if we had known that it was going to be the penultimate PC. One of my big justifications for not going is that I could spend the money required for travel to Sydney on going to all four 50Ks instead. Oh well.
I truly don't care that much about the reduced payout for Indy, although obv we would all like it to be higher. I'll still play there, and I would even go to the Columbus 10K, except that I don't think I will be able to convince two other people to go with me.
I understand how they can't continue to have these cash tourneys, if they are not turning a profit, but it baffles me as to how they think that cutting all tournaments will somehow help Vs turn around. Unless they are making these City Championships "single set" format, I really have no incentive to buy new product even if I am a casual player (especially with effectively ending Vs limited play). Having the 10K at Indy be an "any set" format just reinforces this. In our areas no one plays in Hobby League, and maybe this will change with the advent of the City Champs, but I have a feeling that if the store has to buy Hobby League kits for the entire year in order to hold the City Champs, then even those won't be happening.
I'm definitely glad now that I unloaded my extra Enemies and STTGs last month, but I also bought a Mobilize on ebay the other day :(
