Epilogue:

“Yeah!” Garth shouted, raising a fist in triumph. “Hit him again, Rokk - and put some stank on it!”

“No,” the young, dark-haired athlete said, standing over the body of the last conscious terrorist. He waved a hand and the chair he had used to knock the fighter down warped and entangled him. “We don’t need to beat them senseless, just stop them. We don’t have to enjoy it, we just have to get it done.”

*Rokk is right,* Imra thought to the boys. *We can’t prove we’re deserving of rights and status if we act like children.*

“But we don’t want to be on their level, either,” came the ragged reply from Mekt. He had been beaten to within an inch of his life by the terrorists and had used the last of his energy to ensure the Olympians made it to safety. Now, he stumbled back into the main arena floor and used the wall for support as he limped along. “We need to prove that we’re fine as we are - we’re as good as the over-agers and three times as quick. We don’t need to pretend to be adults to be worthy… we’re already all we need.”

“Sprocking right,” Garth said as he went to his brother and helped him up. As the boys and girl came together in a congratulatory hug and introductions were made, a crowd of Science Police, journalists, and officials burst into the arena.

“What the frack is going on in here!” an older beaurocratic-looking man in a too-expensive suit blustered as he stormed to the front of the crowd. “Who are you children and just what do you think you’re doing?”

“Their job, apparently,” Mekt said, standing tall at once and ignoring his injuries. He gestured to the Science Police dismissively as they began securing the soldiers. “These fascist commandoes of yours were just going to let these kids die to prove a point, so we thought somebody with half a brain and a whole heart ought to take action.”

“You’ve interfered in a UP military operation!” the beaurocrat bellowed, his jowls shaking with rage. “You’re all under arrest!”

“For what?” Garth shouted. He was angry and not hiding it well. “All we did was stop those goombas and save the Ballers’ lives!”

“What you did,” the politician hissed, squinting and fuming, “was cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage, endanger the lives of the people outside this building, unlawfully discharged unregistered deadly mutations in your lightning-filled tirade, the Braalian illegally used registered mutations, the Titanian girl broke dozens of mind-laws and that’s just for starters!”

*You would arrest us for saving lives you were going to ignore just because of some property damage?* Imra thought to them, shocked at the proof of Mekt’s fears.

“Those children were an acceptable risk, and we don’t need to explain ourselves to the likes of you brats! Captain, arrest those underagers!”

The Science Police Captain began advancing on the four, and they knew they weren’t strong enough to stop all of the armed guard. They clustered together in a group, Garth’s hands crackling with lightning as a group of Police over twenty strong encircled them.

“Power down, underager,” the Captain said. “You’re coming with us for crimes against the UP.”

Rokk stepped forward and waved his hand, sending the police sprawling. “Bite me, Grandpa,” he said with a sneer, lifting off in flight and taking the rest of his new friends with him. Garth blew a hole in the arena ceiling and they flew to freedom.

“That was how it all started, Brainy,” Cosmic Boy said, coming out of his nostalgia. Brainiac 5 just nodded impatiently and moved to another workstation in his over-filled laboratory.

“Yes, yes, I’d guess every underager in the UP knows that story in one form or another,” the Coluan genius said sardonically. “My favorite version involves Live Wire as a 7-foot tall lightning beast and Saturn Girl as a half-naked and impossibly proportioned Amazon. But this is not the time to reminisce -it is time for harsh action, and you know it.”

“Yeah, I know. Call together a strike-force, Brainy. We leave for Winath at dawn.”
