I ranted all over my comic forum, but here I will just say that if Patriot becomes the new Cap, then all is forgiven, but basically anything else, even in the hands of Bru, is not going to be worth having Steve shot like this (people only mention Speedball, but don't forget Daredevil a couple trades back, and White Tiger [in Daredevil] a few trades before that).
Marvel = Sucktown

This is a crassly stupid publicity stunt. Captain America got me into comics thirty-five years ago. He cannot possibly be dead.....
...unless Joe Quesada secretly works for DC.
I'm in the same boat. Cap has kept me in comics for almost 25 years! Mark Gruenwald would be rolling over in his grave (I better check my Squadron Supreme trade to see if it's rolling over...)
Personally, Iron Man is one of my favorite characters, and always has been, but I totally hated how they portrayed him in Civil War -- I would have sided with Cap during the conflict. I've even read Iron Man since around issue 200 with the glory days of the Silver Centurion suit.
That said, I would rather have seen Tony Stark take a dirt nap after Civil War than Steve Rodgers. Why the great American Hero, huh? Out of all the heroes out there, why did it have to be the one who practically screamed TRUTH, JUSTICE, THE AMERICAN WAY!?!?! Why couldn't you take the rabid, billionaire a-hole instead?
This whole situation rankles my stomach. Now I only have one reason to buy 616 Marvel Issues: Doom appearances.
Thanks a bunch for the junk shot Joe Q.

Am I the only one who actually liked the Winter Soldier? Maybe not the WAY he came back...as most resurrections suck ###...
Actually, of those I mentioned, Winter Soldier was the only one I somewhat enjoyed and that was, mostly, because of the way Brubaker handled it.
I think that anyone else (read: Millar, Bendis, et al.) would've screwed that up supremely.
That said, the fact that Brubaker is the one handling Cap's death makes me somewhat more comfortable with the way that it will go down.
But, I seriously doubt that it was his decision to do it -- especially since Captain America is the character he left DC to be able to write -- rather than it being a directive coming down from somewhere slightly higher up the food-chain at Marvel (read: Quesada) as the 'this otherwise over-hyped and poorly-executed event really does mean something, see?' nugget that everyone walks away from Civil War with.

I just figured Tony and Co. would have to fake Cap's death so that the press doesn't keep pestering them about "When is Cap's trial?" (plus they can make it look like Cap registered if he was out-and-about after being arrested).

The only real objection thus far has bee either 1) I like Cap, or 2) It's stupid.
I dunno, neither of those reasons really work for me. My thinking, if Brubaker is going to tell a good story with it then it's fine. Ed Brubaker revitalized Cap and brought his stories to a place I don't think they've been for years. He's done the same for Daredevil (though, many loved Bendis' DD, and I can respect that) and Iron Fist (Though, I have a sneaking suspicion most of my favorite parts of that series is Matt Fraction's influence).
I'd just like to understand the anger. I'd like to think that it's more than just a bunch of people reacting without thinking.
Not your fault, but the stupid auto-preview thing when I hovered over your topic showed me the spoiler...in the future, can we all agree to start the thread with *

When I hover over it, I get: "From the Chicago Tribune:
"Gunned down, by a sniper, on panel.
"I hate Joey Q."
Do you get more than that ... ?
If not, I'm not sure what the complaint is. ANYONE could've been the target.

ANYONE! ANYWHERE! ANYTIME!
As for the way the news is covering this, I'm not surprised. I have to give Marvel credit for a good publicity push. Heck, Larry King was so excited over Peter Parker's ID revelation that I figure the ol' guy didn't have to take his viagra for at least a week.
