Wow, so much rage in here. I won't argue any points made, people are free to react as they choose. My only advice is for everyone to just chill out, listen to some Billy Preston, and enjoy life. I love Spidey as much as the next guy around here, but the rage worries me some. Maybe I'm just too easy going.
For the record, I think Spidey needed a fresh new start. Not necessarily getting rid of MJ, just something to remove the funk of the last 15 years or so. Marvel just decided they wanted to use the stupidest possible way of changing it up.
I've got a question for folks though, would anyone here have rather seen Spider-Man pull a Thor and disappear for a few years? What about pulling an Iron Fist and vanish from an ongoing for more then a decade? I'm not trying to tweak anyone, I'm genuinely curious as to what people would like to see as a reboot.
JGon,
You are right. I am angry, and I am angry over a comic book which makes me feel even sillier and pretty dumb on many levels. I hate that such a non-important issue in the world can really affect me like this, but when one of the few constants in your life is just changed for no real reason other then the whim of one person, its kinda frustrating.
I didn't think Spidey was in a funk, I thought spidey was growing as a character, getting older and getting new real problems. Did I want Spidey to move, yeah, I actually thought it would have been interesting if he did go on a road trip for a little bit, (ala kane in kung fu), sometime to give people in NY a chance to come to grips with his secret and time for him to deal with and process all the changes in his life, you know, react in a real way rather then just being chicken and rebooting Spidey's universe so it doesn't fit with the real marvel universe.
Spiey's appeal for many people in the beginning was being a real guy with real problems who was a superhero, his problems changed as he got older, now we just rebooted his problems to when he was a college age bachelor in the 60's, we've already been thru this part of the story.
As a side note, I have talked to 4 comic book store owners in 4 different states, sales of Spidey are down 15-30% at their stores, and this is with the book being produced 3 times more often then it has been in the past. Thats a bad sign, but I hope Marvel is listening.

I'd have been fine with a short break. Personally, I think the main problem was that he was on the run in his books. Something to force him to become registered out of desperation could have really been a shot in the arm of the books. What works best with SPidey is when he has a strong supporting cast. Can't have that on the road.
Can't have that with returned dead people.
Can't have that when he's pushing thirty, hiding from icky icky girls and living with his Aunt for her yummy yummy sweet cakes.
Maybe you really should quit reading Spider-Man. Seriously. Come back in say 5 years, then see if everything changed for the better? Then you save yourself time and money from grief.

That's pretty much what I am doing. My whining posts on the subject have dwindled.
What's funny is that I have kept myself out of the loop enough that I was reading a comic review page and someone mentioned that spidey needed a roomate and the first thought that popped in my head was, "But he has his wi... wi... wif... oh, ####."
With all his powers and depth of character, it made sense that Spider-Man start running with other big heroes like Captain America and Iron Man. It's called character evolution.
Brand New Day neutered one of my favorite characters. I've tried to give the new series a chance, but so far not really enjoying it. Back to the same ol' Pete, forever out of cash with the whole world not appreciating him for his contributions. Just doesn't make sense and is completely unrealistic.
It's a shame that Marvel doesn't publish letters from former fans. Probably too much "selective language."
I agree that there hasn't been a great spidey run in a long, long time. JMS was ok on somethings, but at least the character still felt like Spider-Man(well at least at the beginning of his run). This new one just feels like a completely different character that doesn't fit anywhere in this marvel universe.
But, I agree, Ultimate Spider-Man is still very good.
I don't like OMD/BND either but there is no way I am going to stop reading my favorite super hero especially when, if comic books have taught us anything, is that any huge changes a hero takes is not for good just "for now".
Seriously, I hated the Iron Spider costume but knew it wouldn't last very long before he would be back in the red & blues.
I got a complete run of Amazing (including Amazing Fantasy #15) no way in heck am I going to stop reading just because I don't like what is going on at the time.
Hey, at least you get to enjoy having Harry Osborne back for awhile.
I dropped all my Marvel books after that. Meh, no point in reading it if all the stuff I grew up on NEVER HAPPENED!
but it did happen......only to later have it undone.....that isn't a valid arguement IMO.....its nothing different than a character returning from the dead.
He made a freaking Joke about Captain America being dead in one of the BND issues. After Civil War, which still happened, there is no way Spider-Man would make a joke about Steve being dead!
WHAT!!?? What joke did he make? So it is not bad enough to ruin one American Icon (Spidey) and kill off another American Icon (Cap), one of the most recognizable symbols for the country, but they have to go make fun of it? jeez. I HATE quesada even more for letting that fly. if i ever see him on the street he better be wearing a cup.

QC,
First off, if you have a complete run of Amazing, I grovel at your feet and was wondering if I can have it if you kick the bucket or get retconned into non existence, thats amazingly awesome.
I had the same mind set, that I was going to gut it out, that i was going to stick with spidey no matter what they did to him. The clone saga, the baby that was stolen and never heard about again, the mystical deity/ezkiel stuf, the Osborne Twins, the Iron Spider, the Un-Masking, Norman appearing for no reason after being dead a few decades, Maxium Carnage, MJ splitting, MJ dieing in a plane crash, MJ leaving again, all of it was fine cause it was Spidey growing and dealing and over coming(sometimes in spite of the writers). But, with BND, everytime I read the comic and found pieces that didn't fit, that didn't work, that went against everything spidey/peter has become over 20 years, it made me mad. It mad techdog hulk out and get pissy, and I hate to be pissy! So, I will no longer pay to be mad. It hurts less to stop buying the book to see them butcher the character that i love.
But, QC, please let me know when they fix it and how they fix it so I can come back, I will be waiting for that day.

Your right, I should, and so I am, and I am hoping enough people also do so that Marvel learns you shouldn't do this stuff. I am not sure 30% is enough to scare them, since they have flirted with Bankruptcy before, but its a start.

Im pretty sure those letters at the end are manufactured
I am pretty sure it was in an issue of Groo where Mark Evanier stated that a letter that he wrote to a comic book one time was edited to change what he wrote from criticism to praise. So the precedent is certainly there in the past to alter letters if not outright fabricate them.
I thought some of the new creative teams showed promise (zeb wells I've always thought should get a shot at the title) but overall it seems so forced, and the rotating teams with the 3 issue plots and then dropping everything for the next plot just seems so bland to me. With JMS every month I thought he was at least pushing the envelope and letting the character evolve. With BND he's just become stagnant, and the whole thing about being able to do more stories if he was single? They havent even taken advantage of it!
