The Monster of Frankenstein had never been happy with the inhuman nature of his appearance. Throughout his tortured existance he had hated mirrors and had shattered several in anguish over the sight that greeted him. Before this day he had considered his visage to be the most horrific thing that had ever graced the Earth. He knew now that he was wrong. Seeing what he saw now he wished he'd been right.

Doc Savage was dumbfounded for the first time in his memory. The revulsion he'd felt for the pale creatures he'd encountered was practically nonexistant compared to what he was beholding now. He repressed a tremendous urge to retch. This was the most aggravated assault on his scientific sensabilities he had ever encountered. By all the physical laws known to man; what he was observing should not, could not exist! It was physically impossible.

They were observing a tremendous amoebalike blob with several shifting eyes and mouths and tendrils that appeared and disappeared all over it's mass. As they watched, the thing had some of the pale creatures caught in various tendrils and occasionally devoured them in one of the shifting mouths that were nearest the tendril that grasped them. They could vaguely see the creatures bodies being digested in the translucent skin(?) of this thing.

As physically powerful as the unlikely pair were. It didn't really seem like it would be in their best interests to confront this thing directly without better arms. Doc knew instinctively that his mercy bullets would be useless.

They retreated to the monster's lair but discovered that the amoeba thing was coming after them at an amazing speed for it's size.

Now now! Who's writing this story? How fast do you think planes were in the 30s?

Doc looked at the monster and said, " I think we need something big to take this thing out. I'm out of fuel for my flame thrower. Do you have any suggestions?"

The monster looked at him and told him about a cache of dynamite he'd found and stashed in another section a while ago. It was old and likely very unstable by now which was why he'd stashed it well away from his quarters. Doc suggested they try leading the abomination to that area and try to set it off.

The monster told him to follow. Looking back, they saw that they would have no problem getting the monstrosity to follow. If Doc and the monster hadn't been exceptional specimens of physical health they would have been overtaken by now.

The monster told Doc, "The dynamite is stashed in a cranny. One of us will have to take the time to strew the sticks in the monstrocities path while the other waited ahead and was ready to trigger the dynamite when the creature reached it. If the dynamite off too soon ---?" The monster shrugged, knowing the rest was obvious.

Doc didn't like it. At the pace the monstrosity was moving it would probably reach the dynamite before whoever scattered it could escape.
After voicing his misgivings to the monster, Frankenstein pointed out that he seemed to be nearly impossible to kill and therefore should shoulder the risk.

Doc reluctantly agreed.

Doc's a smart guy. He's already figured out that the Zeppelin's are deathtraps. Unfortunately, greedy entrepeneurs have chosen to ignore him.

Racing to the cleft where Frankenstein's Monster had stashed the dynamite the unlikely duo saw a new complication. a huge cluster of the pale creatures were swarming from the other direction. It was iffy who would reach the dynamite first. This made it even more dangerous to try to use the old dynamite. Doc's exceptional eyesight could see the sweat on the dynamite already.

He knew it was too dangerous to try to use the dynamite now but retreat was blocked by the huge amoebalike creature. They needed a small miracle
quick.

Without warning the monster leaped in the air grabbing a low hanging stalactite pulling himself up. Amazingly the monster was able to smoothly contort himself so that he was able to wrap his legs around the base of the stalactite and reach down his long limbs toward Doc.

Doc immediately understood what the monster wanted to do. He leaped up with nearly as impressive a leap as the monster's had been. The monster grasped Doc and pulled him up.

Using the exceptional power of their limbs, the unusual pair were able to travel grasping stalactites and bringing themselves well above the reach of even the grotesque amoeboid creature.

Looking back Doc noticed the pale creatures had reached the cleft of the unstable dynamite but had stopped short, apparently reluctant to confront the amoeba thing. He also noticed that some of the creatures had grasped some of the sticks of dynamite, studying them curiously.

The Amoeboid creature began tentively reaching up with tendrils testing the stalactites. For a moment it appeared that the monstrosity was going to attempt to pull it's massive bulk up but it's strength or weight was so great that it began snapping the stalactites off.

Giving up on a lost cause, the amoeboid creature turned it's attention to the gibbering pale things.

Doc and the monster scrambled to put as much distance as they could from the Amoeboid thing. Eventually they felt they'd gone far enough to drop back to the ground, especially since the amoeboid was distracted.
The two began running as fast as they could away from the confrontation.

Shortly, they both were forced to dive to the cavern floor as the repercussive force of a tremendous explosion knocked them off their feet.

When they brushed themselves off, neither felt particularly inclined to investigate whether the dynamite had destroyed the threats.

They made their way back to the entrance.

Doc felt that it must be getting close to the time his crew should be responding to the S.O.S. Even his spectacular constitution was beginning to feel the effects of fatigue.

Along the way, Doc discussed the unpleasant fate of his dogsled team with the monster.

The monster replied that he had gotten used to eating various animals and couldn't resist what he thought might be a delicacy.

Doc suggested that the monster return with him to his fortress and he would see what he could do about helping the monster integrate into normal society.

Doc thought that the special treatment he gave his conquered enemies would be useful in curbing the monster's occasional murderous rages.

The two settled down to wait for the arrival of Doc's associates.

hhmmm? usin DOC's brainwashing gear on the monster sounds very risky.

While they waited Doc discussed many things with the monster. He suggested that the monster reside at his fortress from now on until they were mutually satisfied that the monster was ready to function in society.

The monster was excited about the possibilities as presented to him by Doc. Each of the deaths that the monster was responsible for in the past weighed heavily on his mind and the prospect that Doc could ease the fatal urges that prompted the murderous rages of the past sounded very promising to the monster as did the prospect of an eventual end to the lonely life he'd been leading.

Doc also contemplated a reassessment of his own views. He'd always dismissed everything he'd heard about the research performed at Miskatonic University as absolute balderdash. It appeared he was going to need to pay a visit to the institution at the first available opportunity. He saw the Frankenstein Monster as a valuable ally in this new conflict.

Shortly they heard the sounds of a specially modified Boeing 247 circling to land near their location.

The pair began hiking to meet the plane. As the plane coasted to a stop a hatch door opened and Doc's keen ears heard the standard good natured bickering between Monk and Ham going full throttle as they argued over the best way to find Doc.

They lowered some steps for boarding and hopped out. The minute the pair spotted Doc and his unlikely companion they became speechless, dumbfounded at the sight of the hulking 8 footer that stood passively next to Doc.

Doc let them know that the situation was under control and asked if they had brought a fresh dog team.
They had.

Still dumbfounded but beginning to burst with curiousity over Doc's intimidating acquantance, the pair turned to fetch the replacement huskies.

Renny poked his head out to shout something to everyone but whatever he had to say was lost to posterity as he exclaimed "Holy Cow!" instead at the sight of the monster.

Doc said that he'd explain everything when he got back to his headquarters. In the meantime he hitched his original sled to the new dog team.

Quickly admonishing the monster that the new team was off limits as food and that he had plenty to eat at the fortress, the pair sped off leaving Monk, Renny and Ham scratching their heads as they turned to return to Manhattan.

Doc's plan was to situate the monster at his fortress for the time being, returning periodically to help habilitate the monster to function acceptably when he finally brought him back to civilisation.

He'd always scoffed at the rumors and innuendo of the things that seemed to surround Miskatonic University but now he was no longer so sure. He intended to meet with key faculty members and investigate the many things he'd been shrugging off for many years.

He foresaw a long battle ahead of him; perhaps even a war, and the Monster of Frankenstein was the likely first recruited ally for his side.

There were many more he thought he'd need to sway to his side and he was already planning how he'd go about recruitment.
