I'm pretty sure there used to be an entry in the FAQ/errata about them all needing to be together, but the assumption was that it was fixed by the new wording...strictly speaking, the idea of placing 2 separate groups is not impossible according to the wording of the power...obviously intent is that they all must be grouped together...

So, it seems that the question raised here is, "do the tokens get placed simultaneously, or one by one?" If they all get placed at the same time in game terms, I see no reason why they cannot be placed in 2 groups of 2. If they get placed one at a time, then that doesn't work. But it doesn't seem like it's actually spelled out in the PAC that you do it one at a time.

PUNCH THROUGH!: Songbird can use Barrier. Each time Songbird places a blocking terrain marker and before she places her next, remove all blocking terrain markers placed by other characters adjacent to the marker she just placed.

Yes it is an SP, but I think this spells the timing out very clearly...

Ok, good example. I think that makes it pretty clear that they are placed one at a time.

The ONLY thing I could see possibly being justified would be to have the character place a second Barrier (say, with Compel).

Pyro puts up Barrier 1 on one action.

He is then Compelled to use Barrier again to put up Barrier 2 with a split.

Even there, I'd say the argument is shaky at best.

Don't think it matters...if it was one at a time then how do you place the first one if you have to place all barrier tokens next to another?

Just curious what difference does Compel make here (aside from allowing him to throw up twice the barrier tokens in one turn)?

Because the character could start the Barrier (since you need to start somewhere) in red:

And then, since the 1s are markers placed by the character P, you could put some (in blue) next to 1:

But you would need to do it in that order. If you start placing tokens next to 1, then once you've started there would be no way to place tokens in those red squares since they would not be adjacent to anything (and, AGAIN, you must start somewhere but once you've started they must be adjacent).

But....but...but...the very first token you place isn't adjacent to any other barrier token so must the other three follow that rule? That's the kicker here...the first barrier token being placed gives presidence to allow you to split your tokens.
