I played in a tournament last weekend that was 400 points Modern Age, with at least one figure from the BN starter required. I put together a Sinestro Corps theme team using the following:
I was intending to use Sinestro and/or Lyssa Drak, but couldn't find where I'd put the box they were in.
I have to say that Yellow Lantern, Amon Sur and Scarecrow work well together on their opening clicks. Every other turn I would have them use Running Shot against the same target, positioning them so that Yellow Lantern was behind the other two in order to give them both a 19 dv versus range (or 20 when I could get them onto hindering).
My only concern about forking out so much money on Sinestro is that I'm betting we'll get another one in the next DC set. Hate to spend so much just to replace him with a better common version of him in a year's time

I am lucky enough to have a CR Sinestro (I traded for one while most folks only cared about the chase Supermen) and I've been using it for a bit. Here are some observations on both CR Sinestro and LE Grodd:
CR Sinestro: You have to play this figure like he is in the comics; never the first one into battle...hang back and get into it once main forces are committed. This is a LOT to ask of a 146-point, 10-range figure that cannot break stealth. This is a hard figure to play, but it plays like I think the character should play.
AA (LE) Grodd: As an alternate-universe "Sinestro Corps" member, I'm not that keen on this figure, although I've used it (with no "Wild Card" TA btw). This figure has a big "Outwit Me" sign on that skull he's carrying, and the ever-so-common Stealth+Outwit either shuts him down or opens him up to major damage. Even without Outwit, being dealt 4 (or 5!) damage severely reduces his offensive potential, and worse...makes him easy to punk by just about any BST with a shot at him.
The Batman's dial is crazy powerful (but I don't own one and haven't played one).
Of those three, I would go for the Crisis Sinestro because playing that figure *feels* like playing a Sinestro Corps squad. Batman is the best of the lot, but by using that IMO you'll just be playing a chase figure and not really fielding a Sinestro Corps team.
BTW, here is the custom Sinestro Corps ATA I assigned to them during a month-long campaign. It made Grodd a brutal close-combat figure that tied up an entire squad of Green Lanterns by himself!

Don't forget that you can always put Trick Shot on Grodd and it works on almost every click as he has either RCE or Plasticity all the way down his dial.

I know, but now he's 180+ points...and still only sporting a 17 Defense (possibly assisted by Super Strength).
It's not a bad piece, but I have the same reservations about Grodd as I do about some of the more point-costly Green ring-slingers: once the cost reaches a certain point (for my typical games, 150+) I'm either playing that pricey figure and the support that fits, or I'm playing a very limited number of thematic figures (two, or maybe three).
I'll do both, but for a "Corps" team, I actually want more figures on the force. YMMV.
Now that is out of the way, it can be a LOT of fun to play just a thematic pair of figures at 300 points...but min-max (or even just losing map choice to some bogus keyword team) will usually eat them alive. So if you play with folks who sail away from min-max waters, you can have a blast with a figure like Grodd.
