The price tag notwithstanding (I'd personally buy the set, though I cannot afford the set), what did the OP mean by "taking a beating" for the price tag? I assume that there may have been "booing" involved when it was mentioned.
I haven't felt like the price tag was too terribly high, but I'm still undecided on purchase. My local shop won't carry them except by pre-order and I will not pre-order and commit 100% until I start seeing some figures and dials.
My past experience with IndyClix, Invincible, and the Hellboy collector's set was very few playable dials. The whopping 4 sculpts that they have previewed looked very detailed, yet non-dynamic poses. If we assume the actual paintjob takes four steps down from the previews the way it has for other sets, it's going to make for very mediocre sculpts, and regardless of how they plug the special collector's case I'm not buying something based on packaging. No matter how cool it looks, they're getting put into my hardware store dividers in the interest of space conservation.
I love Watchmen and I want the set, but $100 is the difference between an extra brick of Web of Spiderman (which will contain 50 figures instead of 25). If they want to start seeing any significant pre-orders, we're going to start needing to see the previews. With the previous Indy sets having blown goats, I'm just too skeptical to bank in favor of Watchmen being good, regardless of how much I love the comic.
PopularCollections takes your $ and delays shipping for months! They are called PC for a reason; everyone who rolls with them ends up wanting a re-do
The thing for me about the watchmen set is that it has 25 characters...Who are they? The movie (on which the set is based i believe) only had like 12 characters in it.
Early indications are that the Brightest Day kit will cost $28 for seven figures. That's $4 per figure. $4*25=$100. Add in the anticipated lower sales volume, and then balance out the costs for the special packaging, and it makes *logical* sense.
The "problem" with the $100 price point is psychological, not economic. Despite paying the same per-unit cost as a Collector Set, it seems more expensive because you're buying so much at once. That concern is magnified because no one can reasonably guess who those twenty-five figures will be, and because the big heat for Watchmen passed a year ago. And for retailers, of course, it's a bigger risk because it means tying up more of their money until it sells.
I doubt this will mean the end of "major license" sets. However, it will probably mean the end retail-release sets this large. Any future licenses will likely stick to the seven-figure format, since that seems to be more comfortable for customers and retailers.

I actually don't have a huge problem with the price. I agree that it's a psychological thing. I'll definitely pick one up. I do wonder though how much the licensing cost factored into the price point and/or the decision to make it a bigger collector set. That's more what I meant about major licenses. If WK/NECA stuck their necks out on this one to pick up a highly coveted license and then it doesn't sell well for whatever reason, they're going to be less inclined to go after that next license even if it seems like a "sure thing". That's my main concern. I don't want to have us miss out on something like TMNT because the WK higher ups say "We tried that with Watchmen and it didn't work out too well".
The Watchmen will be the first set that I won't be buying. I really don't have any interest in the Watchmen. I have already told my venue not to order one for me.
On a positive note for the set, the venue owner has ordered an extra set to be used as a prize this summer. We will be keeping track of everyones Wins and total points for two months. At the end of the two months the winner will receive a watchmen set when they come in. We still have the weekly Brave and the Bold prizes as well.

We're planning something similar at my Venue. There are lots of people who may not buy this but would enjoy a shot at winning it.

I believe this is just a legal issue having to do with Alan Moore's reluctance to license anything Watchmen.

Watchmen the Movie is a way around it.
That's an old comic/urban myth. Moore has no rights to Watchmen to sign away or license. Zip. None.
What he and the artist had was a (then unheard of) clause that once Watchmen was "out of publication" that the rights would revert to them from DC. The rub was that Watchmen was so popular that DC has never let the Publication lapse. Moore feels this violated the spirit if not the words of the agreement. This is why he just hates on DC as opposed to pursuing anything legally.
I think the prestige packaging is a huge mistake with the Watchmen set.
Who wants the box?
When I saw the release that said "this isn't something you'll be throwing away" I thought to myself "wanna bet?"
how much did this packaging increase cost?
I know I can save $30 by not buying this at a local store, and I absolutely will. $30 is a lot of money to me. The 25 figure set is a great idea... but put them in a plain cardboard box next time~!
