As Marvel Comics no longer possesses the licensing rights to Rom from Parker Brothers, the character is not allowed to appear in his armored form. However, Marvel has found ways to work around this dilemma.
In 2000, Marvel published a five-issue SpaceKnights series which featured a hero named Prince Tristan (codenamed "Liberator") in a redesigned version of Rom's armor. He fought along side other SpaceKnights named after some of the more popular ones from the original series.
In the Captain Marvel series featuring Genis-Vell, Rick Jones was shown to own a toaster in the shape of Rom's helmet.
In the alternate world of Earth X, Rom had ironically been banished to Limbo and was battling against the very Dire Wraiths he had sent there. Rom was seen in human form wielding his Neutralizer and using his chest-plate as a shield. He was referred to only as "the Greatest Spaceknight."[
In 2006, Marvel reprinted the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe as part of their Essentials line of trade paperbacks, including the Rom entries.
In The Avengers 12.1 (2011), the super-villain group, The Intelligencia, was seen working with a 'spaceknight' that had actually been hosting the Ultron A.I.

Ooh. Didn't read this.
So, there is a chance we could see a new comic in the future and therefore a possible set of clixs.

I don't think it's too weird for someone to be familiar with the character but not with the toy. The toy failed and vanished pretty quickly,
Yeah, I was a kid buying comics at the time Rom #1 hit the old spinner racks and even then, as a kid who would've been the target audience for the Rom toy... I never really knew anything about the toy. I mean, I heard rumors that Rom was based on a toy, but I never even saw a commercial for it, so I assumed the toy was a really cool shiny-chrome 4" action figure type thing. It wasn't till years later and the internet that I saw the disappointing mess that was the Rom toy.
But, on the other hand, these days, with the internet and all, it always seems weird when someone doesn't know any old obscure fact, like the real name of Shaggy, Jughead, or the Skipper. Once upon a time, you had to be a real trivia expert to know that sort of thing, but these days, everybody should know that sort of thing.
He is cool to remember, but the comic wasn't that good.
I vaguely remember the toy. It was somewhat cool at the time, but not all that desirable because there were similar toys on the market.
The comic was the best thing to happen to the ROM toy, and Sal Buscema was the best thing to happen to the comic. And it was still lackluster if memory serves me.
My .03
I respectfully disagree with you about the comic being lackluster or "not that good." The comic was great and it sure helped that a single writer crafted it from beginning to end. Rom was a tragic character doomed to fight a seemingly eternal enemy but still managed to prevail against not only Dire Wraiths and their allies but also the despair in his soul. He managed to meet just about everybody in the Marvel Universe at the time and this helped make the threat of the wraiths feel universal in scope.
I loved this book. It's sad the issues will probably never be reprinted.
I apologize for being such a downer yesterday. Don't get me wrong, I like Rom the comic as well. 75 issues isn't such a short run for a toy tie-in either.
I have always been a huge fan of Bill Mantlo as a writer. When Baron Karza in Micronauts turns down godhood because it means he'll no longer want to hurt people, it's a very chilling moment.
I do believe however that Rom's listing in a Marvel Universe reprint is more an editorial oversight with no real legal ramifications than Marvel still having the rights. Or maybe like with Essential Godzilla, they may have eternal reprint rights and just no permission for new material.
I knew about the toy before the comic came out. As a kid I was always interested in the non-mainstream comics put out by the Big Two, and I jumped on Rom from the first issue. Loved it, although frankly I don't remember it all that well now.
Loved the various takes on Rom that have been posted. Here's my take on him and Brandy Clark:

Speed - Doctor Dredd's Ritual: Give Brandy Clark a Power Action and replace this character with Starshine (#ROM-02) on its orange starting line. Existing action tokens from this character, as well as action tokens and pushing damage for this action are applied to the replacement Starshine. Backpack Rockets (Running Shot) Speed - Space Bridge: Starshine can use option 2 of Telekinesis, but only on friendly characters. Cyborg Strength (Super Strength) Destructive Energy Beams (Psychic Blast) Galadorian Armor (Impervious) Extreme Durability (Invulnerability) Defense - Starshine's Sacrifice: Starshine can use Toughness. When a friendly character adjacent to Starshine would be dealt damage, you can instead choose to have all the damage be dealt to Starshine as unavoidable damage. Alien Alloys (Toughness) Damage - Living Light of Galador: Starshine can use Ranged Combat Expert. Starshine ignores Shape Change.
Rom goes without saying. The real question is: Where the hell are the Dire Wraiths? They were serious evil aliens in the late '70's early '80's when Rom had his series, they were used heavily in the New Warriors in the '90's, and were even used recently in the Annialators. I can't tell you how dissapointed I was with them not being in Galactic Guardians.
And while I'm at it, where is Torpedo/ Turbo. Make some version of that character!
I didn't know if he was a rube, a souse, a wiseacre, a hophead, or a bright-boy, but I knew for sure that I didn't like him.

I'd love to see Rom in clix. I always said if I won the lottery I'd buy the rights to the character so he could be clixed.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
