A lot of my friends are swearing off XBOX ONE. Any ideas why? I mean I know the not owning the games you buy thing is pissing people off, but that seems to be the future of gaming much like mp3's, except we were duped into it with digital music.

My wife was a bit upset about their extremely chauvinistic press conference, complete with rape joke. Didn't see it myself.

I think that I missed the boat on this one. So, does this mean that instead of buying the physical game you have to buy a download of the same? How would you be able to lend a video game to a friend? What am I missing in this picture - besides the rape joke that offended Quebbster's wife?
On a completely different note: we are finally getting new floors installed in our house. This means that we had to vacate yesterday and are staying in a condo-like hotel until the job is done (courtesy of the insurance agency, thank goodness.) It sure doesn't get boring around here!

Basically, even if you buy the disc, you still have to activate it. Every game needs to be downloaded in full onto your hard drive. If you try to play a game that you have not paid for an access code to unlock it, you will need to pay full MSRP to access it. In addition, once the developer decides that not enough players are using a game to warrant the upkeep of their servers, they shut them down, and you don't get to play the game anymore, forcing you to go buy a newer one. Basically, it's the end of playing old games, borrowing games and buying/selling used games. It's also the end of me buying games unless something else changes that.

Sounds like one of those things that is fun if you do it of your own volition, but not so much if it's mandated by life emergencies. Good luck, brother.

Oh, you'll have a physical game. It's just that that physical game will *only* work on your machine. Because you're not buying a game - you're buying a license. Games on Xbox One are no different than MS Office products on a Windows-based PC. You want someone else to use your copy, you gotta buy a license for it. Xbox One might also be able to use Kinect/Illumiroom technology to identify who's in the room and deliver game/marketing content accordingly. *That* is my favorite bit.

Is it just me or does the whole video camera constantly on in my living room a bit disturbing? I unplug my kinect unless we specifically want to use it for that reason.

The heck??? If XBOX is going with this method, I can see the rest of the industry following along. This does stink, though. I mean, with the Wii you could download older games to your virtual console - but paying MSRP for the license blows in many ways. Based on this info, I most definitely will not even consider buying the next gen XBOX. Ugh.

Geez, so now the game console gets to scan the room and get additional data from the comfort of your home? That starts wandering into the "Big Brother" territory of creepiness. Can't say that I am a fan of it.

I hear you and heartily agree. No XBOX for me. Too bad, because I love the graphics on the 360 and I was sorely tempted to get one. Oh well.

That's one of those cases where I think the market should take care of it.
Surely nobody will buy something like that, right? Right?
In some ways the license thing is good. You're on file so you don't have to buy the game again. I broke some CDs back in the day and had no recourse. Still, as a whole that kind of sucks. Have to play online, no physical game.
I'm writing up HAWTness this morning. Realms is blocked once more, so the thread will open when I get home.
And this may sound super-nerdy, but I managed to beat all the master pet tamers on World of Warcraft.

Yeah, that's why we can't have nice things.
The only plus I can see is that Miscrosoft is trying to force cable companies to itemize based on the user's preferences, meaning if I only want to have the 8 channels I actually watch, then that's all I pay for. No more paying $90/mo for 1000 channels of crap I don't want.
Lets see PS4 has lower price point, does not require internet connectivity at all, no restrictions on trading and selling used games, the Eye is not always on like the connect and is not collecting information that could conceivably be used to spy on you, from a hardware perspective they are virtually identical.
Im afraid that MS is sinking themselves. It seems Sony learned its lesson from the PS3 and some of the mistakes they made there at launch that put them considerably behind in that generation of consoles.
At 500.00 the xbox exclusives are no longer worth the purchase. there just aren't that many exclusives that I care about.
On another note I love that im getting 2 free games every month until the new Xbox comes out. Thats awesome.
But it seems PS4 is the way to go this time around. Previously I bought all 3 systems but this time around PS4 is likely the only one i'm buying though I may get a Wii-U once the price point goes down this fall.
