The Bomber's nice in that it can get you up to 100pts easier. You can really load up that thing, even with the upgrades provided.
And even the silliest and ugliest ships are turned into miniature art under FFG's hand. Look at the Moldy Crow, it had such an ugly model in the Dark Forces games. I was originally only thinking two. But after seeing the model in person, had to get a third. Consider this your warning about FFG's dark miniature voodoo. God help our wallets when a Star Destroyer is announced...
When I can walk into a store & buy Porkins for $15, I will.
You can play porkins by printing the card yourself... the figure is no different. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ff...ek-porkins.png
Do you really think you need six real copies of "engine upgrade" to play one on each figures ?
Of course you probably can't in competition, but who cares about competition... There is no "game police" that will come to your house in order to see what you play with your friends.
That is the way it is meant to be played.
Don't let them fool that you "need" to buy anything.
There is an android app with all cards of the game.. easy to use and free.

You realize I'm going to cut and paste this the next time you complain about WK and LE ships in Attack Wing, right?

You know... i have a custom Nimrod heroclix because i don't want to spend the money to have the real one ? You know i've made the custom when it was previewed (long time before buying any DOFP stuff and long time before the collation was known) ? I also have converted my three IC sentinels and my three "action pack DOFP" (old ones) into three defense mode and attack mode new sentinesl without buying any of the scenario pack ?
I certainly don't give in in buying things at an amount of $$$ (in my case €€€) that i would not be happy spending. Never. A custom costs between $5 and $10 to make and is more than enough to have fun. It can be a custom of an existing dial (pro : other player accept it easily because it's an official dial ; cons : you're limited to what already exists) or it can be a totally original one. I have made both. By the way, most of the times, "real" (original) customs are way better dial-designed than genuine wizkids work IMO (in heroclix i say). But i'm partial. It's probably my pen&paper rpg player talking here. I've been using my own rules or twist of the rules in so many games that it's like a second nature to me. P&P RPG players tend to be of a "if i haven't done it myself it sucks" mentality... I do at times
But look, i have my moments ! I think FFG x-wing is almost perfect for now. I hope it will continue ! (i think i used to talk that way about heroclix a looooong time ago ; or did i ? err... no, in fact i always had small issues with clix, but they were nitpicks compared to the issues i have now)
What is annoying about the LE ships attack wing is if the sculpt is different or unique to the LE (i don't talk about just a painting) and you can't make any custom about it. Or need to be a sculptor to succeed. And i've not even really checked if it was the case or not for the attack-wing LE, i just said that i don't like the LE mecanism (exclusivity for tournament) at all, and i was glad x-wing had NO such mecanism.
Of course you can play also without the sculpt or with a proxy sculpt, or even just a small cardboard... but that's a little sad. I've done that though. When i was a student with no income, i played demonworld miniature game buying only the book codecs and none of the figure, making just small cardboard tokens.
Also, you're comparing a LE that is IMPOSSIBLE to buy from a shop with a piece that CAN be bought from a shop but you just don't want to buy the pack it comes with. It's not exactly the same. It's not the price of the LE that i'm disagreeing with, it's the exclusivity for tournaments.
I never said the fact that this perticular x-wing is in a larger package with a big ship isn't an issue. It sure is an issue for SOME players that don't want to spend that much. What i say is that is a VERY different problem from figures being exclusives or tournament prizes.
But you're right on one point : in my mind, wizkids sucks. And they will always be. They have turned me, a long time fan of heroclix, into a total hater of what they do. And it's like the dark side of the force, i think i can't be turned back now...
For all the complaints about LE's, they're the only company still going strong on tournaments. I can't speak for other venues, but at the one I frequent WK games - specifically Attack Wing and Heroclix - are the only games offering tournament events that attract players from moderate to great distances each month.
Hell X-Wing can't even hold the locals' attention enough to warrant a weekly free play league, let alone a pre-release event. It may be the better game but no one ever accused FFG of superior marketing.

There's a decent group here that meets once (and sometimes twice) a week here. But the scheduling is a problem for me. I simply can't attend those events at the time they are at. I wonder if its something similar in your area? Maybe people's schedules just aren't meshing.
Here I've seen weekly gatherings of people for Magic, HC, AW, XW, D&D, Arkham Horror, Pathfinder, Warhammer, and some historical minis game or other. And that's just what I've witnessed.
There are 542,000 children in foster care. Talk to your local foster and adoptive agency. You could change a life.

It's all regional. My area seems to be in full on growth. A group is growing, supporting 2 stores. I do need to talk to the one store about arranging tournaments, but the free play seems to have a decent group. They are the big store of the area, so is constantly running a lot of different things, and no one has really stepped up for the tournaments for them. But there is a second store that seems to start running tournaments, and we had 8 for just a quickly announced tournament. But they also filled to capacity at 19 for Imdaar Alpha. And it seems some of the other cities around are having growth.
And I guess that also brings up the differences in tournament style. I guess it is fair to say that the local stuff isn't that great. But FFG's fostering of a tournament circuit seems to be working great. Store Championships did ok, but they were sooo watered down, it isn't that big of a surprise if the turn out isn't record breaking. Imdaar Alpha was a success here at least. And Regionals are crazy. I know the regional I want to go to in Chicago on July 27 already has over 30 people preregistered. They have smartly extended the Gencon national tournament to 3 days. And one of the preliminary days that you can actually get tickets for is sold out, 128 participants. And who knows what Worlds will be like. Last year, there were 80+ people who traveled to Minnesota in the middle of November for Worlds.
And you will pardon me if I do not mind that environment FFG has fostered. Some of the prizes can go for money, sure. But the demand for that is limited to those super collectors. The lack of impact on the game does prevent the NEED to get certain things.
I also don't think it's fair to mock Attack Wing for their $100 DS9 and Cube. We all know that FFG could very well unleash something even more expensive.

Nope, it's just the result of fickle, half-hearted attitudes among the few people that tried it out and then just stopped playing. A lot of no-shows and false promises by a largely fickle gaming community. It's tough to overcome a mentality of, well, disrespect and apathy. It's probably too complicated to accurately describe on a public message board system.
I've done the only thing I can, to focus on Attack Wing as the game of choice because that's a mandate of games like this - to have others to play with, but I have to admit the added cost of The Collective OP is putting the strain on that with all the money draining WK is so well known for.
Is there any chance that ONE THREAD helping a guy decide what to buy for X-WING can stay on topic without devolving into this same debate?

Honestly? I think the TIE Defender is one of the silliest-looking ships I've ever seen ...
The bomber route is legit. I've never played one just because it doesn't fit how I like to play (dogfighting, fewer weapons, etc), but it is totally viable route. It will fill points, give you some survivability, and give you some nice firepower from secondaries. Between the two, I'd personally go Interceptor or Aces, but I can't fault the Bomber choice. And the Interceptor has Soontir Fel ....
Should have known this thread would eventually devlove into more "my game's better than your game" drivel
Well, just one thing to add:

This is actually not the case. Although you can't get some of the sculpts as Attack Wing ships, all (that I'm aware of) are available as Heroclix models, so making custom figures is really cheap and easy. I was flying 3 Ferengi marauders long before I bought the LE.
Fortunately for me, many of the same guys that play Attack Wing at my store also play X-Wing, and on weeks where there's no OP it's split pretty evenly between the two games (most folks bring stuff for both), so I know I'll have opponents regardless of which I'm in the mood for.

Thanks for the input! Wellsir, you just made up my mind. I'll start with a Bomber, and an Interceptor or Aces is next on my list for Imperials.
The Bomber, Defender, and to an extent, the Phantom (though I don't exactly recommend it) are great additions to help Imperials be able to field 100 pts.
