They usually do have meaning in most games, at least a hint as to the theme if nothing else, as well as revealing a character not present.

Majority of pieces just sit there, and I tend to stick to just DC pieces when newer sets unravel (Not including X-related pieces, of course)

I went out and bought a bunch of Dicemasters since it was an interesting game with no relative investment and space consumption.

Any one that harbored interest lost it and those that do hold tournaments/games are two hours away. Eh...

I can't recall if I ever played against my piece. Maybe I did and saw it as an immediate inconvenience that resulted in a one shot early game.
