Yeah I second this. That's why I don't wanna go competetive.
So if you want to see something like a 70'small X-Men team won an event, why aren't you out there trying to be the one to win a tournament with a 70'side X-Men team?
Not being a smart alec, just asking. Just seems silly to say that since you don't see one, you won't go competitive when you haven't tried.
1/6th of the Brothers Prob. '19-'20 Season: 15-13(8 events) 2 wins, 2nd XDPS PR 9-7, 7th SOC
I can't be the only one who like to see something new win these ROC tournaments? We have 1000's of clix to use but only 20 keep showing up to these. I would have loved seeing a turtle team take first. Or a 70's X-men team.
Grats Ed on the win love that team.. My wife also met you an says grats on the win..She is sad because Isaac was always up in his room an she like's him an never got to meet him Great win man!

I think the main reason is its not possible to win a competitive event with a team like that due to certain game elements such as the quinjet and faust being too strong to handle. Sure there's going to be a game or two where the quinjet roles crap and the call-ins cant connect shots. but the majority of the time that won't happen.
plus bad die roles are not something to rely on when playing clix.

Competitive Clix will always boil down to the same general assortment of figures (I'd max it at 50, including Resources), with few surprises, as that's basically the name of the game at that level.
Longest-Reigning Drunken HeroClix Champion - anyone got a liver?
I never thought I'd be writing a post that says "my World Cup winning weekend went like this.....". (if anything, I figured I'd be writing "Isaac's World Cup winning weekend went like this....). It's truly an amazing feeling and I thank all the volunteers and judges that put so much of their time and effort into setting it all up, from SuperQ's to Regionals to States and to the biggest production of them all, the World Cup. Thank you Howard and Tony (Typhon) and Terry and Brant and so many others whose name I've forgotten or didn't get.
How do I write this up? A fairy-tale story of following in my son's footsteps? Just be thankful I made it to Top 32 and the rest was just icing on the cake? How Faust can change a game? How it takes a team like the Four Points Gaming Club to get someone to the Finals? We all help and hone each other so much, and my amazing thanks go out to my awesome teammates Isaac, Scott Cramton and Matt Esbrook.
Isaac and I both came prepared with our full Jet teams (2 drones, Jarvis, Thug to pilot, 9 IDs) that we had been practicing for months from way before Worlds, but as Scott was playing a Mxy/Froggy/Drone/Jet team, the thought was "well, Faust = 1/2 Jet, so why not?". So we did half-jet and took off Thug to get the Finals-winning team. Isaac went with full Jet/Faust/Jarvis/Thug. Just a note here, Four Points don't really develop our teams like other groups do since we live at all points of the compass. We do a lot of individual testing and idea-throwing-out over text and emails which we playtest with our local groups at one of our venues like Highlander Games here in NJ (shoutout to Team Pusheen - Kennie Pena, Brian Galley, Jayson, Abdul, Bradley, Kenji, Brian). Then when we're at the tournaments we go crazy evolving teams and ideas until we all settle on our final builds usually just before playtime. It's a pressure cooker and it's certainly got it's pros and cons.
So, all Four of us played in the SuperQ on Friday and Isaac went 4-1 to get 7th place. I was 3-2 as I was playing my 300 pt original (non-Faust) team plus an extra 100 points, as were a bunch of other people. So not really "400 point synergy". I lost to a Sloth-equipped Superdoom in 1 game and I forget the other one.
We spent Saturday playtesting and Isaac and I got to sleep late around 10:30pm. Well, late for us There was Murder Mystery followed by another tournament that Cram and Matt both played. Matt went undefeated!
Finals Day! My apologies to anyone whose names I get wrong or teams or situations. Feel free to elaborate as necessary!
With 88 players and 4 rounds we knew that the top-finishing 2-2s would make it in. Probably 6? So points mattered. Congrats to the guys who made it in from the Quarters. Very studly.
Round Robin
Gm1: vs George Massu
150 Lex Luthor (mastermind)
25 Poison Ivy
25 Poison Ivy
50 Ant-Man
Pandora's Box (full)
4? IDs - 135 Green Arrow, Nick, War Machine. Not sure others.
He chose Morlock Tunnels and bunched everyone up into one corner to assign sins for 4 or 5 turns and make Ants. I hung back and eventually rolled Yellow or Any for 2 turns in a row and blew up his team except for Lex and maybe 1 Ant Swarm. He then advanced but Faust rolled only close so I advanced and brought out Nick and Canary next turn to KO Lex for the win. George unfortunately had to play a Faust team in his next game, too. 1-0
Gm2: I have absolutely no recollection of this game, other than I won it. Weird. Did I play Matt Billings? 2-0
Gm3: vs 2015 World Cup Champion Isaac Arnold-Berkovits
145 QJ+R
40 Jarvis
80 Felix Faust
10 Thug
8 IDs
We both knew we needed points regardless of who won so we just want crazy on the Turtle's Lair. Neither of our Fausts ever rolled a true shutdown until he rolled it near the last turn. To start the game he advances to midboard and my Nick damages his QJ and I move up. We ID'ed and real boy-ed quickly, not really worrying about positioning. Both of us KO'ed ID figs. He won by taking out what was left of my team that 1 time his Faust rolled a shutdown. 2-1
Gm4: Robot Swarm. We were both 2-1 with high points so we knew win or lose we just needed points. He sidestepped the Drones up while I rolled for Faust. Not sure if it was turn 2 or 3 but I got a lockdown (maybe only Close?) with Faust so I moved the team up. Next turn didn't get a good Faust roll and Faust ID'ed out Black Canary and she went to pulsewave the Ultron-1 drone and a few others but missed. I did not get good QJR rolls this game. I retreated back to my starting area. Next turn I rolled Yellow on Faust so blasted his whole team, taking out all the retailiators and 1 to each drone but ResDrone returned, drat. Table advances 16 slots(!). I ID'ed and took out I think a pair of drones and the table advanced some more. I think he got to Table25 with a few minutes left and maybe 4 drones remaining. He got out 100 Supes Prime, 250 Steve Rogers, and I forgot the 3rd one on the final turn. But he missed 1 or 2 of those attacks and I got 1 or 2 of those call-ins off the board before they could strike again. I won on points.
3-1
---------------------
Isaac, myself, and Scott Cramton make it in to get some solid Four Points representation!
Top 32: Soldier Theme team. He chose The Blue Line map. I think he was one of the guys who started in the Quarters! Wow!
100 Element Man (EM)
25 Brainiac
1 Justice League ata that reduces my attack values
60 Peggy Carter
25 Eclipso
30 Ultron Drone (chair, targets through elevated)
15 The Atom
Pandora's Box. Some IDs. He did not assign a sin to EM, choosing to advance quickly. EM had Invincible, Impervious, Senses, Shape Change.
I rolled ANY w/ Faust, chose only Close and advanced up. He cleared and my Black Canary hit EM and Peggy for 2 each because of the knockback. Faust psychic blasted and took out Peggy (had invul from Eclipso). Then I retreated back. He bring in Nightwing and Zucco heals EM I think all the way up! He moves EM all the way to base my QJ while Atom slowly carries up the Drone. I kept positioning my attackers so that Atom didn't have anywhere he could retailiate from. I just kept ID'ing and real-boying figs to damage EM while Faust did range attacks on him. Eventually got through all those defensive powers so he had to Regen (from Brainiac) on his last click instead of attack so I got the win maybe 90-25 for the score?
Top 16: vs Bob Gowans. He chose the WK Casino map. He had just defeated Isaac so revenge time! Or at least just try to win.
200 Lex Luthor
20 Brimstone
15 War Wheel
25 Atomica
Pandora's Box, 4 IDs
He assigned a sin to Brimstone, and Wheelie brought Lex up to midboard. I ID'ed 85 pt Green Arrow and took out War Wheel with Energy Explosion and Lex missed Imperv so he took 1 dmg. My resource roll was a 5, so QJR was on 70. The QJ picked up everyone and moved to the corner. He ID'ed 135 pt Green Arrow to EE on the Jet and took out Atom, did 3 to Faust and 1 to each drone and 2 to QJ. QJR advances to 80 so I know I'll at least get Black Canary. So I had a drone ID out Nick and rolled 5 on QJR so it's on 160 which means it's Batman time! Nick took out Atomica and the QJ brought everyone up. I real boy'ed TW Batman (I had him at 150) and he single targeted pulsewaved Lex for 5 while basing him, then outwitted Brimstone's retaliation. He regened for 1 click. I ID'ed in Nightwing, then Bats pushed and took out Lex and I think Booster Gold KOs Brimstone. A short game due to great QJR rolls.
Top 8: Proteus/Morlock/Jarvis/Jet/Drone/bunch of IDs. He chose The Blue Line map.
Got Orange on Faust early so he couldn't power action Jarvis to pilot the Jet while Morlock pushed, so he didn't push and risked the Proteus rolls for 3 turns. It turned out OK for him and he was able to get Proteus into the Jet. I rolled only close actions with Faust so I advanced up. Next turn ID out Nightwing and Nighty KO's the Drone then QJ retreats with everyone. His jet moves to half board but then I rolled Yellow and damaged Jarvis & the Jet. He clears, I go big by ID'ing Nick with 1 drone, then having the other drone plow through all kinds of blocking so Nick can do 6 to his jet. He brings out Green Arrow and takes out that drone. I used 6 IDs all together and lost a drone while he lost a drone, morlock and 6 IDs. I won by 10 points, 70-60, a Morlock's difference.
Top 4: vs Patrick Yapjoco. Full Jet w/ 2 drones, Atomica, Henry, Atom, 8 IDs. He chose Manhattan Bridge map.
He advances up. I Nick Fury his jet then pick up the team so Nick disappears. His Hawkeye misses my Atom & Drone. I roll Any on Felix and choose only Ranged actions and base most of his team. He clears. I call out Nightwing to Flurry the jet for a lot. I then try to KO it with Booster *and* the Ultron drone both miss! Roll a 7 guys, c'mon you can do it! He strikes back with I think Green Arrow and EE and does a bunch of damage. I do get the Jet next turn though for the win.
Final: vs Easton Brock. Full Jet w/ 2 drones, Atomica, Jarvis, 9 IDs. He chose Danny the Street map.
He clearly knows exactly what to do on this map and executed perfectly. I kept with the assault-the-jet strategy (hey, it got me 1 and almost another so far!) by calling out Nick Fury to get his Jet to click 6. 18.2 drone ssteps away carrying the other drone so Nick goes away. He calls in Firestorm and misses Atom then carries his drone with his jet so Firestorm does away. I get Yellow with Faust and blow up Atomica and get both drones for 1 and the Jet for 3 more (so on click 9 I think). Then my jet does lots of positioning so Faust can't be retaliated on. He bring out Batman and heals the jet for 1. I keep Yellow so attack again taking out the other drone but the 18.2 one rolls imperv(!). He brings out Green Arrow and EEs my team, doing 1 to each drone and taking out Atom. With Atom out of the way, his Atom comes in to attack Faust but misses everyone. Then Atom walks away. I didn't roll any of the Faust shutdowns in this game.
I made a strategic mistake here. I was indeed delirious and not really all that sure of my thinking at the time. Probably I was so enamored of taking out his jet that I risked everything to do so. Granted, I did end up with a 50% chance to do so, but it was definitely riskier than what I've come to realize were better choices. Since he had tokens on all figs (except Jarvis), and his resource dial was on 30 (or something low), I moved up the jet with the team and since my resource dial was on 60, real-girled out Peggy Carter to do 5 to the jet. I think Kennie Pena mentioned on the stream that "he knows how many clicks the jet has". I think I didn't realize it had Toughness showing......so it ended up on last click. I was really messed up by the map roll this turn as if I could move diagonal (or anywhere), I think I would of had much better positioning. Ah, Daniel. Oh how you flummox and fascinate me.
His turn Atom takes out both drones to go up on points and Peggy is off the board and clears the others. My Jarvis IDs Atom and I spin resource dial too low so I could only bring out Superman Blue. He double-targets Jarvis and the Jet, only hitting Jarvis to KO. I had to put Supes on the roof near his jet as I couldn't get to the jet from the other one. So I opened up myself to an attack and KO of Supes. So, I think I internally debated like 6 things here. Have the jet carry the team to block who he could bring out but that seemed pointless. He still had his Nick. Bring up wounded Faust in case I roll something great next turn so I'm close enough for a lockdown. Hide Faust better behind blocking (which I also should have done, but didn't). Have Atom move somewhere to block a LoF. So my turn ended and his begun with only seconds left. He IDs in Nightwing but before he could do anything time was called and I ended up being up on points. I think it was exactly midnight, too.
All in all a great experience at a great tournament that is run very well. We all look forward to many more!
I'd say that competitive clix is at the healthiest point that it has been since World's 2012, where the teams tended to be all different, with the main common game element being the Gauntlet. There will be the highest tier of stuff, with the good stuff rising to the top, but as far as this game goes, if the competitive scene isn't your thing, that isn't gonna change regardless of the top tier of pieces. They're gonna be good and not necessarily everyone's definition of fun.
It's ridiculous that anyone plays HeroClix and wins four thousand dollars. I'm sure that money will help him recoup his losses of having to buy so much product from NECA just to keep up in Modern Play. LoL
I played Ed at Canadian Nationals earlier this year and he was a great player and great sport. Congrats!
Well glad to see the years have made him a better sport over the years, when I played him he was quite snarky and after time was started he already was talking about going to a roll off. Really turned me off, sounds like he's changed.
As far as the format, I can't fault him or anyone for that matter on the use of the mechanics that have been brought out before us. Do I like that we see drones bringing in 120 pieces left and right? Nope, but it's a strong team and I can't blame them.
Congrats to the winners and I hope everyone had a good time at least.

dunno. maybe? Wondering if you remember any details. I don't usually play roll-off capable teams.
