Mine is 19 original, 21 that you see everywhere. Though I am unsure of what would be considered "staples". In my original pile I have mystica tomatos, reinforcement of the army and book of moon....many people use them, but would never say "staple".
Also what would painful choice or 2 nobleman of crossouts fall under?
Very inspiring article though, I'm gonna revamp my deck soon.
I don't think my deck is too full of staples...yet. I run a mostly LVL deck right now, with Mystic Swordsmen and Horus's aplenty, and I have a sad feeling that some of those cards will become staples (or at least widely used) within the next few months. >_<
I did the test on my metamorphisis deck, the result was 20:20 ... I really liked this article though, it makes me wanna try out some new decks..... like a dimension fusion deck... or possibly a flip deck revolving around night assailant. As for my exodia deck, I seem to have lost it at the moment >.< its not in my backpack... but once i find the kid who has it at school... I'll count it up, that deck is really barely stapled at all. I think all it uses is cyber, fiber, pot, and swords. Also, few questions on staples... do you consider the following "staples"?
-Reflect Bounder
-Ceasefire
-Solemn Judgement
-Megamorph
-Blowback Dragon
-Gear Golem (2200 def. without a bad effect, I love it!!!)
Agent deck (aggro version): 22 first pile, 18 second pile.
Bad Karma deck: 16 first pile, 24 second pile.
Spirit deck: 16 first pile, 24 second pile (and the present build STILL sucks, lol).
Serpentine Princess burner: 16 first pile, 24 second pile.
Now that I think about it, the article is that much more vague as to what "staple-heavy" is...I even included Vampire Lord (from the spirit deck) in the second pile, and he's hardly used outside of Zombie decks...in some of the second piles, I even stretched to Giant Trunade, Fiber Jar and Cannon Soldier. The more I think about it, the less this article makes sense...and I'll never be a regional champion, because I have no way of getting to a regionals presently XD (i'm in college, left my car at home, 99.99% sure nobody on my floor is going to a regionals, and I'd rather not be driven to poverty by Greyhound bus system..).
I support originality alright, but there just happen to be formulas that work better than others and have more consistency. I think this is brought on by the smaller card pool...would you rather use Jar of Greed or Reckless Greed over Pot of Greed or Painful Choice? How about Spiritualism over MST? I've only been to one tournament in my meager little dueling career, but from what I've seen people taking to regionals in the Deck Depot, the mainstream stuff seems to be what works.
I looked at my friends deck, he has three times more cards in his first pile than in his second, im dead scerious. I was surprised and it shows that new decks like hat do surprise people, becuase he always beats who he plays
I did it. My deck is roughly 75% unique and 25% staple. However it depends on what is a Staple? Are Spear Dragon or REBD staples.? If so my dragon deck may be more staple, but it depends on your view of what is a staple. Plus it can vbe very satisfying to win with the card that makes your deck unique. Mine is Komouri Dragon. Sure, its no ddwl or bls or IFB, but its my favorite card and its helpful. So, I don't think its bad to use staples but keep your deck unique.

I think hes more heading toward you throw in coh mst pog and stuff like without even thinking instead of saying do i really need a this in my deck.
also think this article isn't saying that mainstream stuff shouldn't be played because they are mainstream. It more of the non mainstream deck/cards are just as powerful and regional worthy
Welcome to the Staple Heavy Match of the century... I should try this staple replacement thing. I'll still play some of my favorite staple cards, but not all of them...
Included in my staples are the following: All Equip cards that are universal (Axe, United, Mage Power, Black Pendant, and Malevolent Nuzzler... Yeah, I use a major Beat-Down Deck) , Exchange, MST, the original six big staples, Magic Cylinder, Witch of the Black Forest, Cyber, Jinzo, Graceful Charity, Snatch Steal, SORL, Vampire Lord, Magic Cylinder, Harpies Feather Duster, Monster Reincarnation (I included this because this is the post-ban version of Monster Reborn), Sinister, Card Destruction, Waboku, and Dark Magician Girl. Some of these may not be actual stplaes, but I was trying to be honest.
