I think the biggest problem that most people seem to have with CBT is the expence. You can play DA for $30(well in australia anyway) whereas with CBT you have to spend so much more to get the stuff you need($20 for the rulebook alone not to mention maps and minis). These days EVERYBODY has to look out for their wallet, so most go with DA cause it's cheaper to get started. Classic Battletech is in my opinion, a vastly superior game in terms of flexability and depth(DA might get there in 10 years), but it's just to expensive for most new players to start up. That's a shame cause I think that people who've only ever played DA would love CBT, once some of us "Old timers" showed the pups how it's supposed to be!
30 USD will get you into a sealed booster event here from which you will walk away with some genuinely awful units, esp. WorkMechs. You will not have enough to be tournament-competitive or even think about faction purity. For that same price I can buy the one and only CBT product I ever need -- the "fifth edition" boxed set. You don't need minis. "Cray" Miller, one of the best-known personalities on the CBT forum, is famously on record stating that he prefers to play with bottlecaps. Classic BattleTech is a boardgame with optional miniature accessories. It is not a miniatures game.
If I want to play CBT in the 3067 era, I really just need the BMRr (about 20 USD) and probably will want a TRO or two (20 USD apiece, I think). Let's say you go pick up the BMRr, a map set, and TROs 3060 and 3067. That's less than 100 USD. That's ten boosters of MWDA, which is likely to have two uniques and maybe ten good units total. Maybe enough to build one or two 300pt faction-pure armies... that probably won't be terribly good.

Borrowing BMR from a friend and copying tables in the back: $0
Downloading The Drawing Board for mech designs: $0
Making your own 3D minis with powerpoint: $0
Printing your own mapsheets: $0
Amount of fun I'm having with the game: Priceless
Actually, I can't say that exactly, I've probably gone through about 15$ worth of ink and a ream of paper since I started.

[b]CBT more expensive than MWDA??? I can't see it.
Ok, I'll stand corrected then. Me, I'm a purist. If I'm going to use a specific mech, then I want to own the mini for that mech. It means that I spend an obscene amount of money on mini's and rule books and TRO's and maps and such, but that's the way that I want to do it. I'm not saying that everyone who plays CBT has to do it the same way as me( heven forbid), but most people who get as "into" the game as most of us old timers will have, over a period of time, amassed an huge collection of minis and associated parafenalia. If you add up the cost of all the things you buy thinking that you "need ", you just might be surprised at how much you've spent. That was all I was saying. Just in case you ask, I also play faction pure armys in Dark Age. Can't see the sence in playing in a tourney for Highlanders Vs Laio and not using Highlanders/Laio. Again, I'm a purist so that's just me.
