The visible magazine also inspired the clear polymer magazines that are becoming very popular for modern assault rifles and SMG's. That's just an example of inspiration outstipping technology. ;)

It really doesn't look that much like any other mechs I've seen out there (and I've seen a lot of anime :P). Besides, to look like a Gundam, it would have to have the characteristic antennae patterened off of a samurai helmet's horns ;)
The same kind of antennae used on the Original Wasp, Stinger, Phoenix Hawk, Griffin and Chameleon. In fact, all 15 of the original mechs cam directly from anime.
Personally, I think this was a very well thought out design process. It restores a lot of hope that the WK team in charge of the MW line is going to take the game in the right direction.

None of those, however, is the Gyrfalcon, which is what I was specifically referring to ;)
As nice as this article is, both the idea behind releasing such information to the public and its actual content, I still have to register my continual opposition to the idea of totem 'mechs and, in fact, the very concept of the Clans, implausible and strained, which has the potential to lead to such foolishness in BattleTech.
The faster we can return to a Clanless, human Succession War, the better.

Interesting Andy, do you have any links you could share?
All these worries about the French gun inspiration remind me of what I thought when I first got a Lego with it's exposed belt fed ammo. These certainly aren't the best real world design decisions, and I personally wish they hadn't been made by the design team(s). You also gotta remember that this newest design decision is the best of the bunch. It actually works, concidering the molding process. It's easy to make an 'open' clip design really be a 'windowed' clip design.
People point out the original 17 clan omni mechs as being the basis of all utility, that they were not stylized. That is a falicy. While there were not many examples of thinngs like sharkfaces painted around the barrels of guns or anything, each clan had their own particular flair. The falcons for example Wove their Ferro Fibourus Armor in such a manner that it it resembled up close, the down feathers found on any bird of prey. The Jaguars were fanatical about keeping ALL faces of Armor plating Smoother then glass to reflect the somke Jaguars coat. The there are totem mechs that exist among the home clans. If any clan was so steril for its machines it was clan wolf. What you saw in the 3050 readouts was prertty much what the wolves used with no little touches. so the Eyire, Gyrfalcon, and Shrike as well as other facets taken into the Falcon scheme are entirely appropriate, and frankly, ####ing cool!!
I have not posted on these boards in some time, and generally lost interest in mechwarrior some time ago (Like many others I assume.) But I still visit these boards time to time. I was just tired of being burned by wizkids, and constantly pulling construction mechs. (DnD minis guarantee a rare per box, can't go wrong with that )
This made me feel like wizkids is a faceless moneygrubbing army of robots. BUT seeing the design process, for however good or bad the end result is, has renewed a bit of faith, and humanity..... Only a bit though. However I am glad now I did not sell off my entire collection, as there could still be hope for this game.
We need to see more of this process and WIZKIDS NEEDS TO TALK with it FANBASE! Not just wait until half of there customers have left in frustration. Maybe they are getting a hint from the Wotc boards. They show stuff like this all the time, AND the designers of the DnD mini game regularly visit those boards and discuss what is going on.
So what is it like in CBT? Here's my best guess design:
Tonnage: From the look of the design, its a bit slender to be a 100 tonner. More likely, it's in the middle range of 85 or 90 tons.
Speed: Looks fairly mobile...about a 4/6, and with the design paradigm esposed for the falcons, probably jump capable.
Weapons: On the left arm, we clearly have two autocannon type weapons. The barrel porting gives it away. Probably Ultra's, as they suit a crusader mentality very well. Over the shoulders, it looks like we have a pair of lasers...either ER Larges or Heavy Larges...I personally prefer ER, but JF's would probably take Heavies. Lastly, the knubs on the torso are clearly missile launchers, either paired LRM 5s or a single LRM 10...based on the placement of the tubes, I'm thinking paired LRM 5s myself.
So, with that, here's my thoughts on the design, in actual stated form:

There is one thing though and this seems to be common through MW:DA, and now through Falcons Prey that the mechs at lower weights and levels like Light and Striker units for example look to heavy and beefy for their range.
Okay. Sure, you have to 'moving forward, always ready to strike' thing down quite well, WizKids. It's just that...it looks horrible when it's APPLIED TO EVERY FREAKING UNIT! It sounds like they're almost planning on modifying every single JF unit to look this way (obviously, they're not). Imagine a 'wings forward, ready to strike' Elemental :cheeky: .
Very interesting and fascinating read! It's amazing how much thought goes into the artistry of the game. I hope to read more stuff about how MW designers create their designs.
It's just too bad the actual "game" portion of MW is, and has been for a long while now, "THE SUCK."
Our game is dying, but at least the art is still inspiring.
I totally agree. The peeps at WK need to get out and talk with us. It really frustrates me that they don't. The very limited info we get from Draddog doesn't really cut it when they're asking us to spend $10 per booster.
@Konig-Wolf
Thanks A LOT for the breakdown. That's really cool.
My only nit-pick is the estimation of heatsinks. If you really want to go by what is said in this article, the new JF heatsink design should be lighter and disperse much more heat than normal heat sinks. I'm not going to go try to do the math, but I'd think the 'wing' heatsinks might be able to be shot off. When they're gone, the 'mech builds up heat MUCH faster. It's a different way to go with it, but this is MW:DA.
That's the only little thing though, and it's not important by any means. Thanks a lot for the BT info!
Thanks Marcus. It does look pretty cool. And these are 15 year old designs! I especially like the magazine design. But could you imagine the ammo cooking off and what your buddy on the left would look like after?
