We rarely get more than three people at the venue's supported tournaments, with two of them being me and my son. Those end up being friendly matches.
My son and I play a few times a week at home. Sometimes a few of his friends play. We use our own rules and the older sets. There is no need to buy the new garbage.
At are venue everyone is pretty friendly... we have about 4-6 people every tourny and were all friends so it's just like friendly games except there's a prizes at the end ... and they keep the comptition fresh and get the neubs some sweet new figs
I just haven't been able to find many people to play outside of tournaments. Everybody I can find seems to live way on the other side of the city. Maybe I'm looking wrong, anybody live near SW Edmonton?
I only play every couple of months, due to the fact I live 45 minutes to an hour and a half away from the nearest approved venue and frankly I don't have the time or patience to be taking that much time out of my day to play in a game, so when they have an approved venue closer to home, then I'll probably play more and buy more, but until then I'll just be ordering online and playing at home.
I play about once a week. Me & a couple of other guys meet every Thursday evening at our venue and get in a game or two. Usually we play 600 points or more unless we are testing out tournament armies. We also most of the time play faction pure. Which has given me a new love for House Liao (Fanaticism rocks!).
I think that playing is the most important. If all someone is after is a prize then I question that he could be actually having fun. It should be more about having fun than pure win lose--crush and destroy. One of the most tragic things that could happen to this game would for it to become all about the prize.
As Kevin points out the object of the game is to have fun, although this is true I find that the prize is also part of the enjoyment of winning the tournament. I have been to several of the events, at different locations. The events that are held at the one store seems like a comunity of gamers. We get together aftet the game and hang out. Its a lot of fun. The other event is just a group of guys competing for a prize, it is not a venue I go to anymore as none of the people there are there for the comradre or the enjoyment of a group of people that are friends. Now I admit that I only see the guys that I game with on game day. It is still a group that I consider to have a bond with. Do we enjoy the prizes, heck yeah. Are we there gaming for the prize only, no. What does this say? It says that the game IS really about having fun, with a group of guys that you can associate with. Would I still play the game if there were no prizes? Yes I would, however I do believe that the prize is part of the game.
I have converted my basement to a game room featuring a 4x8 foot MechWarrior table. I started a game club where some of my son's friends and I play every week using house rules with 3D terrain, or replay classic scenarios (the ice planet scenario is our favorite).
