If these are available to anyone and their uncle, then I say, bravo WK. At least those who can't join OC or go to cons would be able to have an Ares to call their very own. If not, well, I'm not going to assume that's the case, judging by the price. Who knows, the other three units may come out seperately too, in due time. Plus other people may want Poseidon as well, if only for it's cards depending on what they do.
...And the loadout seems a little paltry, or is it WK giving us selective information? This may be the fourth Ares that's supposed to be stronger than all the others. Speculations begin now. :p
Knowing they're all over the place kind of takes away their mystique, IMHO, and also contributes to concerns that these things will begin to dominate this game.
That line is subject to two interpretations -- one, that they're extremely common, and two, that the four that exist are simply seeing a lot of action on various planets around the Inner Sphere. Given that in the same breath they mention they're still trying to perfect the technology, I am inclined toward the latter.
$85 for 6 mechs? thats worse than games workshop prices. I'd get better value for money at Stan James and that's saying something..... Plus, I have to factor in transatlantic shipping. meh, ill just wait a year and get it off ebay for £5 thanks.
I like the whole poseidon idea though, apart from the fact that it is likely to become as ubiquitous as Arnis Drummond. And now we have 600 point games, and no artillery....

im curious would that kit contain 6 infantry pieces then and with 9 secs, that would sound a bit more reasonable (infantry in same colorsceme as Ares where it belongs to, and 3 pilots, 3 engineers and 3 gunners, each for an Ares or would they be generic with different values.
2 ppc and a MRM20? Seems a bit paltry for a 135 ton monstrocity.
you obviously forgot the base loadout mentioned in the first Ares article.
each leg has:
1 Small Laser
1 SRM2
2 Anti-Personell Pods
and the torso has
2 ER Medium Lasers
now, i may not know what else this monstrocity has, but that is what EACH Ares has. that smacks of the giant being an Omni Mech... i'm willing to bet hopwever, that unlike standard Omni's, the weight of the armor changes depending on the loadout in the arms. then again, with 60ish tons of pod space, this mean machine is going to be hard to stop. 60 tons by the way exceeds by far and awat the pod space of even a direwolf!!
Not really... $85 for few cards and 3 pieces of plastic a little bigger than an assault mech? Ill pass. That is highway robbery.
As a playing community we should demand a more reasonable cost by refusing to buy any of these monsters. If we do this, WizKids will be forced to lower the price a more reasonable sum.
Don't forget that the Ares also has two LRM-5 racks in the torso, too. Anyway, why didn't they go with an ATM-12 rack (or ATM-9, whichever fits); a "deadfire" MRM rack just isn't as effective as ATM, and they had access via the Jackalope (it had an ATM-6 onboard). And yes, had they changed the chassis and/or armor, they could fit more. I suspect the Ares is an IS chassis, weapons, and armor, so there goes alot of space. Had it been Clan, the legs would likely have SRM-4 with 1 ton ammo and two Clan ER Small lasers (same size, but more powerful), and the torso would have Clan LRM-10s and C ERMLs in place.
Anyway, enough yammering. I think their decision to make the Poseidon available to the general public was a good idea. I will likely grab it the first day it comes out in my venue. Now, if we could only see the stats and figure out what infantry it pack we will be good.
Yup, I'm glad too that they're making stuff available to the general public as well. I hope we see more non booster stuff sold through stores. The officer's club has frankly been a real expensive mess for me.
wish you could order the officer/battleforce kits through venues, that would help many players getting those figures and would perhaps solve alot of shipping issues, that you can order them at the venue, turn in the sheet with UPCS etc and then the venue orders em for like when he has 2 or 3.
but sadly its the whole mail and wait and hope you get the pieces in working order etc. people without creditcards basicly have a very small chance of getting those kits. if they had other paying options that would help out some.

I appreciate that there is some sticker shock with these but you've got to remember 1. the discount and 2. the size and 3. the paintjobs will likely rock. The later MK Conquest figs had really great paint (like the Orc Cyclops & Hill giant), and I bet these will be even better. 24.99 retail for a fully painted, fully assembled enormomech? That stacks up pretty well to GW retail for unpainted, unassembled grey plastic.

A LITTLE bigger? How is that a LITTLE bigger?
The Ares is, judging by that pic, bigger.

Considering GW is selling Dreadnoughts for $40 a pop these days? You might want to rethink that statement. The Ares is roughly the same size (If not bigger) as a dreadnought judging by the comparison with the Atlas. This is a BARGAIN compared to GW prices.
(And if you think the regular Dreadnought is bad, the Chaos Dreadnought is $45. The Ork dreadnought is also $45. Eldar Wraithlords are $35. Tau Crisis suits are only $20 each, but are much smaller. Broadside suits are $35)
ares kits for grown ups unpainted, unassembled grey plastic. with different load outs

Istal_Devalis what is GW?
what are these other items you are even talking about? never heard of them.

i think maybe there are still some of us that would prefer to assemble the mechs ourselves and paint them. probably get at a lower cost even!
and if there were different load outs set for each all the better let us choose for each ares mech.
young people today always have to have plug-n-play stuff. sometimes it is the designing and building yourself that makes it better than already put together stuff.
