:D For the newbie my advice is that you get sub useful uniqes such as AVANTE REAVER instead of MAGUS or the AMAZON QUEEN coz they are too expensive in their price and thier points plus you can adjust AVANTE's point value co'z he's a member of the hero faction , when he's on level four and you push him to you opponents figure he then will have limited invinsibility on his defense so your opponent will have no counter atk on AVANTE and his cheep so go get one.

Side Comment: You don't need a Unique figure in your army. Make sure it provides some benefit.

Anyway I'm starting to envision the kind of Army I'd like to form. Either a heavy anti-range army (stealth, limited invisibility) or a Ranged based with good melee back up force. I'd like to have good mobility in my forces though since I'm a fan of finnese tactics
Sneaky Stuff: Stealth is very situation dependant. Your opponent can place your terrain choices (it's in a pool, after all) in some inconvient location. There are actually few Stealth pieces that you're likely to use. Limited Invisibility is just about as common, but the pieces are more focused on 'not being shot at'. Basically the two abilities are focused on more defensive figures. Crystal Warriors are probably your figure of choice.
Range 'n Stuff: You're more likely to work it the other way around. ;) Range is a secondary (but still important) attack capability. Blockers, and speed often overcome a ranged combat dependant force. Occassionally you can get both in the same figure. Centaur Lieutenants make excellent melee defenders for ranged figures.
Finesse: There isn't a whole lot of finesse available. But you can get flexibility.
Charge and Bound figures allow you a move and an attack. What many people forget is that they also allow you a double distance move with no attack. And the decision is made when you use it. There is also a pronounced tendency for them to be loners, which means faction affiliation is also much less important.
Quickness will be required. It's almost always on wimpy figures, so don't expect much. However, the 'free' moves can shift a lot of figures around the table. Very important for blockers, or guys you want to run up and prevent enemy ranged pieces from shooting. Since it prohibits formation movements, you also don't have to care about which faction they belong to.
This site has a Warrior search function. Once you identify what kind of figure you'd like to have, it will pull up a list of all figures with that ability and/or attack value and/or any other consideration you're aiming for.
Well, the magus is good figure, but unfortuately, AG is played in abundance and you expressed a desire not to be

yet another one of those X" players
and magus/AG is the norm. Heirophant, is, in my humble opinion, overcosted for 300 pt games... i would go with the wraith, and mix it up with some elemental ranged/melee combos. figs of choice for your upcoming squad (if you can lay your hands on them)
Troll Arties
Crystal Bladesmen
EGM
EP
And the figure that no one ever notices
Sislith Bladesmen
no one even mentioned one of my favorite uniques!!!!!!
EGM(Emerald Glade Mystery). This figure has led my forces to victory time after time! Defend, bound, and magic healing....WooT!!!!!!!
Plus, she is a steal at only 68 points(not to mention she is Elemetal leauge so you can move her with your trolls!). Remember, offesne is nice, but just like in football defense wins games(for me anyway)!!!

<rolls eyes> As you can see, Maestro, we Mage Knight-ers have a wealth of advice to offer. The only problem is making sure we stay on track.
So, Wraith or Heirophant. Obviously, if you were planning on a 200 point format, the choice would be wasy (Wraith), but in 300 a case can be made for each. I think that the decision really comes down to playing style.
The Wraith, in order to take maximum advantage of its abilities (Stealth and Magic Immunity), needs to be parked in/behind hindering terrain, so that it can shoot out but nothing can shoot in. As a stationary defender, it is excellent at cordoning off a section of the battlefield--no one will go near it. The problem is that if your opponent can outmaneuver you, s(he) can rip through the rest of your army and then deal with the Wraith at his/her
leisure. Or simply sit back and win by points. And a Wraith who wanders out of the forest is vulnerable both to swarms of low-cost figures *and* being outgunned by other high-vaue uniques.
The Heirophant, on the other hand, can be played much more aggressively, as it effectively cordons off whatever section of the battlefield it's currently
looking at. Its double flame/lightning strikes can deal with virtually any swarm thrown at it, it has first strike against all but a handful of figures
(most of which have a poor chance of hitting it), and by itself it can go toe-to-toe against pretty much any single figure you're likely to see in a
300 pont match. You also have two of the support pieces the Heiro needs: a figure with regular (as opposed to Magic) Healing, and an Imp to block
line-of-fire to it. And lastly, should you decide that some other unique suits you or your style better, the Heiro can be traded for pretty much any other (non Limited-Edition) figure out there.
Cheers,
Dagonet
(And hey, come on, it's a two-headed half-dragon--how can you do better than that?)
Well I saw a Wraith, Magus, Heiro and Wind Minion but all of them were a bit to pricey for me so I "settled" for a decently priced EGM.
What works well with her? I'm pretty sure that you can do stuff with the 19 shared defense. I'm sotra thinking troll Artillerists or Gunners but I'd like some tips please!
well since you've got your self an EGM try having some of Troll Arties and a unicorn bladesman ( standard ) or unicorn tracker (standard) co'z these unicorns has the DEFEND ability and with them EGM works Great.
You could use a couple of figs with battle armour to capitalize on her defense sharing abilities. The Fig with battle armour gets a 21 defense against range attacks which is enough to send most players swaeting.. Boomers come to mind. I suggest though that you get some more mounted figs to cover her sides so as to prevent magic lev skeletons or worst... rammers and venom figs.
