I'm still alive and kicking...but as you can see by my signature, I'm retired from MK. I have put the LOS Lasers on hold for the time being while I decide if it's worth it to continue producing and maintaining them.
that there are more than a few people that purchased the lasers from me and then did exactly what I asked people not to do(ripped them apart to see how they worked). They could all spill the beans about how "easy" it is to produce the lasers.
The ironic part of this whole situation is that I made the lasers to clear up one of the gray areas in MK. When I first started making the lasers I couldn't give them away. No one wanted them. Now that I'm no longer interested in producing the lasers, people want them. One of the big reasons that I don't make them anymore is due to the fact that it's a large type hassle with not much profit being shown for my efforts. I've been insulted in posts before about my making the lasers because, I charge too much for them or they're so "easy" to make. The primary reason I researched how the lasers would function and then constructed them was to help the MK community and better the game. Now that I'm no longer an active member of the MK community, the LOS Lasers are retired as well.
I still may use the LOS lasers for other miniatures games. I'm not certain yet.
ok, I just got the "Irwin Laser Line Level" sold at Target, Home Depot (and probably a few other places but I didn't check) for $39.99.
It works great, just hold it above your figure, the straight line projects down on the table easy to see!!! makes checking LOS a dream!
I never saw Alcatraz's piece, but with all due respect, I can't imagine it worked any better than this. Also, the size is like a medium to large sized tape measurer - so it's not too big to use easily - only warning - it has sharp pins which pop out if you push certain buttons (these are used to anchor the level in wood - for people who actually use it professionally instead of for a geeky game) - these pins can go right thru your skin (as I learned by by a painful accident!!) so be careful when you first test it out - don't just randomly push the buttons!
anyway, I highly recommend it if you have the spare cash and LOS ever bothers you or anyone at your venue! no more arguments or wondering if your Warlord made a bad call!!
my laser did work better than the laser you're referring to. Mainly because it was smaller and more portable/not so cumbersome. It was $25.00 cheaper and easier to use as well. Plus, there was no danger of impaling one of your fingers using my laser. But you are correct, what you have is a good alternative to my LOS Laser.
I missed getting them at Origins because the Warlords running Nationals bought them up and then almost ordered them from you but had a sudden lack of cash and now desperately want to get one and will come up with the cash if you give me another chance.
Alcatraz's Lasers were excellent, I bought two for mself and a friend, who being tech-minded decided to open the end and have a look at the lens (in spite of the wirting on the side which warned against such actions). Result, one curved beam.
Mine still fine.
I feel sorry for Alcatraz though, by Gen-con everyone and their dog wanted one and Alcatraz hadn't any with him, it got so bad that we (the Lions present) were thinking of buying him a T-Shirt with "I aint got any #####ng Lasers" printed on it :D
Man, I'll tell you I researched online for a good 4 hours anyway and found some interesting info, but NOTHING which would allow me to build this myself for anywhere near the amount of money you were charging. The concept is pretty simple, I just don't know how you got/made the lens' so cheap. I've seen these in action (actually Ku used one during the MK Nationals at Origins) and they are slick. Good job.
