All I can say is WOW! the non's look fantastic and useful. If this is the new trend of 2.0 I'll be very happy. I think booster sales would increase as well because of this. No more pulling a peice and putting it with the others. you might actually be excited to see a yellow crusader even though you have 5 reds. Very nice.
It's going to make battles much more interesting...now you have to watch the colors on the sculpts as much as the sculpts themselves. I know you had to do this before, but this takes it to a new level.
I wonder if WK is going to make their painting polocy any stricter because of this?
I've tried to play 2.0 format using around 5 figures, and believe me, it is very difficult to win by holding objectives that way against a skilled player with 7 or more figs. A skilled player will just dwindle you down with swarming you and then claim the objectives at the end of the game.
Those two uniques are cool, but here are some counters to them:
Vithzerai - 214 points
vs.
Wraith 61 (will out range and surge him if played correctly with terrain)
Sham'Rin 57 (will out range and surge him if played correctly with terrain)
Possessed Drac (same surge range, can fly over walls to pop him)
49 points left over for whatever (** Mancatcher, *** Ironstaff Warrior), etc.
OR
Solo Striker 114 (fly anywhere over terrain and surge)
Solo Avenger 80 something (same thing)
Harrassers
OR
Fell Reaper *** 43 for tying up
Bakus to knock down invuln and toughness 85
Khumeret to pick up the slack 86
I'd much rather have options such as those instead of one big piece at 214 that will probably not live or probably not have enough support to hold a second token due to their cheapness and weak stats. I'm sure any good player that saw this one just rolled their eyes at how they can't wait to take it down.
Varatrix 156points is a bit trickier, but still expensive...
vs.
Solo Striker would definately get first surge pop 114 and should hit on a roll of 6, use the other 42 for whatever.
You could also use the Avenger and have first surge strike but the roll is more difficult (you gotta consider that counter attack), but you have near 70ish points to help out in taking him down.
Gate Lord would bite it against him one on one, that is sad.
The tricky thing about him is the CounterAttack, it really makes you not want to approach him without a high attack. Hex would help out here with other figs that may only have 11's and 10's initially for Surging.
And as most others mentioned, we always have Domain cards coming...
This so cool. I must have giant Draconum of Doom! Both of them. They will rock. I will get the solonavi to have him, but not to use. Stupid Solonavi.
And those steam maulers. I want as many as i can get. They are the new and improved steam golembut cheaper. And with this new 300 point army format, I can fit all the more of them in.
And being able to use different levels for different abilities makes all the versions more useful. No more collecting just reds when yellows and blues have uses.
So....bound was clearly broken and dominant but in this set they give us a big bound figure with a range of....24....Not only that but he can...soar...and he has...storm fire. I think the word "death star" just took on new meaning. There's also a couple of 8 inch charge figs, and yet it's unbalanced for 1.0 figs like berserkers or centaur lts to not be able to double their movement?
The Uniques in this set are awesome. They look terrific, and all are great characters - Vizerai, Verartrix, Anunub, Black Thorn, Mageslayer ... finally some great Uniques which deserve the name. The sculpts are awesome, and they have the stats to go with them.
I like the different ranks fielding different purposes, but one thing I noticed is really stupid. Each time they give a figure something special, they take it away again. Whats up with these crappy attack ratings? E.g. the ***UbKhan gets a +3 bonus to his close combat attacks, and at the same time they take it away again by giving him only an 8 attack???
They give the ***Steam Marauder the Bloody Thorn subfaction ability, and at the same time reduce his attack value again to 8?
Seems very silly to me. The * is way better and 20 points cheaper.
The tough one gets nimble, granted - but look at its ranged damage - 2 damage on a 81-point figure. Ridiculous.
So what I would like to see, would be fixed attack ratings. Then add or reduce by using combat bonuses or subfaction abilities, but not reduce attack rating, the add bonus, then add subfaction ability then substract special ability (e.g. crushing blow).
There is really no point in such a mess. The printed attack rating on the dial sould not compensate for having bonuses and abilities. The printing should be set according to the type of unit. Same goes for other values, not only attack. Actually its exactly the same MISTAKE they did when they reduced the speed value on the old chargers from Lancers, and they are doing it all over again.
The Gryphons have flight and charge? What is the attack on those bird-dogs? I could see a flock of those bring down the hurt on these flying death machines.
I think the point of making 1.0 viable is making 2.0 figs expensive, that you will need to have some old figs to support the new figs. But then we really havn't seen a 2.0 healer yet?
24" bounder! I knew it! once I saw the 8 & 10" chargers I knew they were going to pump up the Bound too. The 193 pt 20inch bounding BPR airplane is even less a rumor now, or at least more plausible. I can't wait for that sculpt!
I agree though that the big figs here will be tough to support. But with the relic that kills things with less damage without a roll? what's to stop you?
The point of the attack bonus is so one figure isn't super great in both range and close combat. The Ub-Khan can hit at Range he's just not very good at it with only a 8 attack, but in close combat he's got +3 to his hit which gives him a 11 which is very respectable. Its another layer of strategy, whats so bad about it?
Brutal Delux: the Ub-kahns attack is 11, what the heck is wrong with an 11 attack in close and an attack that never drops below 9? that 8 attack is meant for his range combat, great close but he doesnt throw that ax to well.
I have little faith in the testing that's been done. To me, Soaring has the potential to be the Elevated Terrain of 2.0. To push the envelope, fig wise (and is there ANYONE out there who will say these two figs don't expand the power curve of the game?), with Soaring figs is risky. So... I'm not enthused.
Because this time they can't just make "Elevated Terrain" illegal.
I have to say I really like the new figs. I expect the whining about the Solonavi and the Drac, but then again I expected whinning anyways ;)
I really like the new scuplts and abilities. I think that the BPR has a pretty solid replacement for its Steam Golems in the Steam Marauders. I like the Khans too, but I have only started to play Orcs recently so I don't know how well they stack up.
The one thing I have to point out to all the people who have been complaining about 1.0 figs, is the relatively low stats for the 2.0 figures and the very high degree of specialization involved. I think that we will be seeing 1.0 for a long time in the battlefield, mainly because they will be so good in many things (considering their point cost).
I think the main thing people need to rember is....The Draconums and the Solovanis are SUPPOSED to be the most ripping, tearing, mess you up fighters in the land.
