man all I know is 1.0. I don't know anything about these silly relics, items, mounts & junk. Weird to me. I don't even know how to play Dungeons. I've attempted the game 3 times in the past 10 years, once as a 9th grader when it just came out and twice as a college student. However, for reasons unknown, I just ordered 30 Unlimited & Minions boosters so you can bet that when those come in I'll be posting what I got, looking for advice.
MK 1.0 was the best version of this great game. I own complete sets of both 1.0 and 2.0 (6,100 figs not counting cards) but I very rearly play 2.0. I loved the simplicity and depth of the original as well as the ability to look across the table and have a fairly good idea abourt what I was dealing with. In 2.0 the variables were so numerus and the color coding gone so you had no idea what you were facing. I now am working on collecting all the 1.0 LE's. I love this game and will try to post some of my favorite armies later
I have a question as a noob who is completely unaware of the fallout that happened between players & Wizkids concerning the implementation of 2.0 and the subsequent uselessness of 1.0 pieces. Was this, right here what i just mentioned, the main reason this game died? I played it in 2002 as a freshman in high school, got out of it and flirted with it a few times later in college, but the game was dead. What the heck happened?
Also I am getting back into the game but seeing as how I only ever knew 1.0, me and a friend are ordering a bunch of minions, unlimited, and sinister boosters. However, we essentially are limited to completely choosing only 1.0 or 2.0 which means we will only play pieces from Rebellion through Uprising. Still, 2.0 looks sort of interesting. What is the best advice for this? Order two separate collections and play two separate games or is there a relatively easy way to play both without breaking the model of 1.0 that I have come to enjoy? Because these spells, relics and other junk is foreign to me.
I have a lot of thoughts on the subject and would like to share them with the community but I still can't post a thread.
You can play both games together, by using a few rules to convert figures, but that's largely using 2.0 rules. Though you can choose to not include cards if you want (seeing as how you'll already be playing under non-official rules to play both games' figures together. See the resources thread for the conversion rules.
As for the reasons the game died, well, there's a lot of those. But the poor implementation of the 1.0 to 2.0 jump was a big part of it, yes.
thanks for those threads. that was.....fascinating and kind of depressing.
i feel like i missed out on being a part of tight-knit community but at the same time it seems something massively sad happened around here and now there are only a few left to frequent the remains.
what an odd time for me to get into the game again.
With auction listings on eBay coming in around 3000, which is ten times the amount of listings when MK fell down hard, it's actually a pretty decent time to get into the game in terms of being able to find pieces and accessories. High prices for the best Uniques/LE's are still there but there's plenty of reasonable to cheap stuff to be had. This uptick in listings really surprised me! Better get buying while the getting is good!
As for tight-knit community, MKRealms was a fractious place at it's peak. Today the MK community is tiny but you're getting some pretty good leavings to deal with. Some of the people here have HUGE collections and they may be able to help you get set up with the more common pieces. All sorts of past strategy postings will help you learn how 1.0, 2.0, Dungeons and Conquest were played at the highest levels. I hope you are able to keep your MK ember glowing along with the rest of us maelstrom nexus!
Yeah, I feel like a loser saying this but I have been going through the old strategy threads day by day and finding so many interesting things. It's almost surreal (and sometimes hilarious) what I find in there, as a sort of timeline. Everything from the craziness over the Four Horsemen auction to the classic "Best Unique" threads to the release of 2.0 and subsequent onslaught of mixed feelings.
I feel like an archivist doing all this digging through dead files. Good thing I'm a History Major!
A friend and I ordered a big combination of Unlimited, Minions, and Sinister (these are substantially more expensive and harder to find) and we are looking forward to having epic battles over Christmas break. I may be like 8 years too late but I love the game.
Now that the tournament scene is gone forever, most playgroups that still exist are much easier-going. That's not to say I ever hated tournaments or "tournament players", but nor do I mind that that source of pressure is gone.
It makes it much easier for a small group of friends to use house rules, custom figures (assuming the latter are fairly made), run faction pure campaigns, or other silly things, because you only really need to come to an agreement with a handful of local folks.
If someone comes along from a different group you can still have games the old fashioned by-the-book way, but usually any news faces are just happy to get a game in, rather than go on a rant about any peculiar local habits your group might have.
I mean, having more people to play with would be great. But I'm alright with things as they are.
One thing I did make sure to do was to get enough figures that I can field a large army from each faction, so that any friends who want to play won't need to buy figures. Eventually (rarely) one of these will decide to make that final leap and buy figs themselves (which can be tough), but if someone just wants a casual game once in a while, I've got it covered.
Faction pure? You betcha! Playing with each faction's strong and weak points helps the cause of balanced play. Too bad this was not a core principle for the game.
I agree also because that's kind of how it is in MTG. Not only do people net deck the best 5 or decks in Standard, they sometimes carry that mentality over into Casual, which is strictly what I play. It's so much more fun to play with my silly Dwarf or Kavu deck than with Valakut Titan Ramp or UW Control or all those other top-tier decks.
I suspect it's the same with Mk. Digging through the forums, I found countless "KI Swarm" and "Guerilla" armies and while they were all cool looking, they were pretty much all the same. I hope to have at least one army per faction too, for flavor purposes. Heck there was a time when I thought you could only use one faction for an army..
In 1.0, I loved the way an all Draconum army looked. I found them to be very powerful when used properly, but at the same time, they were also balanced because the dracs were very expensive compared to the rest of the factions. In terms of pure looks, I loved running King of the Dead with 1 ***Fell Reaper and 1***Fell Banshee. I backed that formation up with Uhlrick Charger and 2 ***Nightmare reapers. Then I usually tossed in a necromancer and a couple grave diggers, an Order of Vladd backed up by 2 ***Nightstalkers, and a nightmarish quantity of marsh zombies. The cherry on top was a **Corrupted Priest to heal the cavalry. Note that this was a purely friendly game army. I rarely, if ever, jumped into a conquest tourney.
