Ongoing effects do not use, influence, or depend on the chain in any way. Once they are gone, they are gone reguardless of what point you are in on the chain. Not sure why people continue to argue this when Alex from UDE already made this abundantly clear.
hmmm. just curious - did you read the rest of my post? the part you quoted was part of my explanation as to why there is some level of confusion on the matter.
i then pointed out my error based on UDE comments and put closure to my argument.
Originally posted by erick Also... some Ongoing PTs are hybrids, continuous but triggered. How are these treated when removed from play.
Take Bitter Rivals for example:
Ongoing: Whenever your Dr. Doom attacks the named character or is attacked by the named character, your Dr. Doom gets +3 ATK from this attack.
So I attack with Dr. Doom, he gets +3. Then my opponent uses Foiled, does Dr. Doom still get +3 for this attack?
Yes, Doom still gets the +3 ATK. Bitter Rival's continuous effect is to give Dr. Doom a triggered power. When triggered, the ATK bonus effect is placed on the chain.
Since effects exist independent of their source, whacking Bitter Rivals is not going to stop Doom from getting his buff for the current attack.
Okay this was confusing me for a while too. What you have to look at is the effect itself, not the card. In your example erick, it is a triggered effect:"Whenever your Dr. Doom attacks" so it uses the stack...um chain. To prevent Doom from getting the +3, your opponent should play foiled after you declare Dr. Doom the attacker, but before you exhast him and he becomes an attacker.
I actually do know the answer for my question, but I think the discussion of it will help others understand that just because a PT is Ongoing, doesn't mean that removing it from play nullifies it completely.

The whole time I was typing this response I'm thinking, "Why is erick asking this?" Now I know. Your crazy, man! :p
Well I guess that answers my question...Bitter Rivals activated ability will still trigger even if destroyed by Foiled in the combat phase...Therefore Dr. Doom will keep the +3 for that attack no matter what. Unless it is destroyed before he is declared the "Attacker" correct?
LATER.
Edit: And I'm sure if I look a few posts up I will find my answer...oops thanks anyway! ;)
Originally posted by Beyonder VS. Master - Actually, No. Bitter Rivals does not target Dr. Doom. So if it is Foiled the effect stops working when the Foiled resolves.
Only if Foiled is played BEFORE Doom exhausts to attack.
Surly - okay, reread the card - it reads differently than a card like Doomstadt or Danger Room that are ongoing. Bitter Rivals is a triggered effect - once it happens, Doom has the bonus for the full attack, but if the Foil was used, Doom would not have the bonus for subsequent attacks/defends.
This was the Yancy Street thing, and why I specifically included it in my previous response.
If an effect is triggered, it is now part of the chain, and it is too late to do anything about it unless you can somehow negate it. If an effect is ongoing, it ceases to be the moment the source is removed.
If you stun my Ben Grimm, and I have Yancy street in play, I get an effect on the chain, to search my deck for a card named Thing. Playing Kaboom now will allow you to play a plot twist on my KOd Ben Grimm, but does not change the fact that I may search my deck. If you played it beforehand, then I wouldn't get any benefit from Yancy Street at all.
Bitter Rivals seems to just trigger a +3 attack for Dr. Doom, so I would say that once the bonus is placed on the chain, it won't be removed by removing the card.
You have to try to determine the way a card works, using the principles that we have had laid out for us.
I'm going to miss this thread... Reasonable people passionately discussing their side of the issue, no flaming...
