That's strange.... When I've travelled to Europe I've always been told that ATMs give the best exchange rates and the fees are cheaper.

for withdrawing money from a US account, yes, but this is a debit Visa, so the rates are different. If you go to a bank, their rate fluctuates with the actual rate.

Also, if you have a US$$ account, you save even more money without worrying about the exchange rate - but you can't deposit US$$ into an account through a CAD ATM...

AND I'm not entirely sure the ATM would recognize it being a US$$ debit card, and one may get shorted...

I wouldn't take a chance, I'd go straight to the bank ;)
