I think you may have your facts slightly off there...

I believe that Columbus only got as far as the Carribean on his first voyage and thought he had reached the spice islands of the East Indies. I believe he was Genoese and sailed under a Spanish flag (Castille).

It was John Cabot (or Giovanni Caboto) who discovered the North American mainland. He was Genoese or Venetian and sailed from Bristol under an English flag.

It was Amerigo Vespucci, from Florence who discovered South America and was I believe the first to realise he had reached a new place rather than finding a new route to somewhere known. It was this and his spicy reports back to Europe that got his name on both continents. I believe he sailed for Spain but I can't remember.

I may be off on a few of the facts as I am dredging this up from quite a few years ago, and if so I apologise.

If you are looking for credit for discovering America after the original inhabitants made the passage across the Bering Strait (or possibly from Oceania into South America), and after the Vikings discovered it then I think it goes out fairly equally across Western Europe, but especially to the Italian city states.

[I doubt they would confirm that 'nothing is wrong' ... actually that would be very funny. Have a specific dicussion where a UDE employee comes in everyday and posts "everything is going according to plan". If they ever miss a day, we'll know something is wrong.]

It's just that I've heard rumors on another "popular" board that there are some problems with DCR too, so it would be really nice if someone from UDE comes here and says, don't worry, everything's ok. :)
