Actually, the intent is that we focus on the superheroes, which DOES drive us to constantly improve ourselves.
However, the supervillains, if you so choose to idolize them instead (like me), then you are driven to improve your person while degrading your soul, if at all possible. The notion of morals is bent and twisted to become that of your idols, and any notion or sense of a positive afterlife you may have once held is quickly overtaken by the desire to one day rule this puny world.

Aye, there's the rub. You are buying into the traditional "good versus evil" party line. "Degrading your soul"? Sheah, right.
We don't often have the despotic ruler who wants to kill everyone. No, we have the tragic artis types who are misunderstood (Joker), those that want to do what is best for their people (Doom), those who want to do best for their people AND are fighting oppression (Magneto), and sometimes just those out to get a bite to eat (Galactus). Venom has had his own book and takes his turn as hero, Deadpool is one of the finest books written, the reprogrammed Sentinel for that short lived series was wonderful.
It is a fine line they straddle for most of the characters worth reading. Black and white heroes or villains are pretty uninteresting... whcih is the problem that plagued DC for many many years. Look, I HATE DC, but I am willing to admit they have improved greatly over the years hehe.
But at any rate, we look to those villains also, because often they have many fo the same motivations we do, they just don't have the same limitations holding them back. Most of the great villains with real longevity are not always 'evil' so much as just having an opinion that opposes the status quo the heroes of that book need to support.
Ever watch Survivor? American Idol? C.O.P.S.? See, Mojo isn't all that bad afterall. Hell, look how well he motivated Josh Whedon and Aaron Spelling!
