Like others said NKY/Cinci is a great place for VS. Especially ACME. I remember when I could go to any higher level tourny and play with Jason Hager, Matt Oldaker, Anthony Justice, Adam Prosak, Karl Horn, Loren Nolen, Anthony Calabrese and literally many other 10k/PC winners/top 8ers (and even MORE consistent top finishers). Hell... all of those players but Prosak (who moved) and Calabrese (judge) still play regularly on Sneak Peaks and most of them play at all the events but the TDC guys. The best part about it though is that they're all good guys and we all have fun.
Although we have quite a few players in SoCal... the local hobby scene isn't the greatest.
We can get 8-man drafts going but those are usually when guys call each other. Some of our constructed tourneys get 8-12 players (our last mono-team format got 8) but nothing huge.
There used to be more players but now everyone is so spread out, it's difficult to get consistent numbers weekly.
Reviving the local scene is a resolution I plan to work on for 2007.

The best part of living in the Cincinnati area is the number of card players. When I was in High School, everyone played Magic. Those in the band, I played with a couple of the football players, the people in the art room. I would sit in the back of class and play. Then on the weekends sit at Perkins till 4am drinking coffee and playing there.
I even owned a Game Store in Covington, KY. And years before that I worked next door to acme at the Dairy Mart (I had more fun playing Warhammer 40K over there)
I just find it rough that some new people to the game or to the Acme as a store say they feel unwelcomed there by the staff and some of the older customers. On the upside there is still 4 other games stores I can think of, and a couple of comic book stores too.
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky is just a great place to game. I can find 5 role playing games and just as many card games every week that work with me being in school and working.
We'd love to have a Hobby League in STL again, but the only store interested in having a league can't get Upperdeck to talk to them so we have none and our PCQ attendence has dropped to about 10 per PCQ.

I think I will be driving down there to see friends more often now. Thanks for the heads up.
We have a slowly growing group in Menomonee Falls (Milwaukee) WI at Fortress Games. On average we have 8-10 players show for each Hobby League, but there's well over a dozen players in the area, and more are coming every time. If we could only get them all to show up at once . . . .
Niles, IL and Madison, WI are only an hour away (or so) so the PCQs and other events are makeable, and the turnouts are pretty good. 30-50 at Pre-releases too.
So you guys wanna send us some of those players..?
Turnouts here in Colorado, especially Colorado Springs is horrendous
We have a hard time getting 4 or 5 people, 10 or 12 would be a miracle
The PCQ and Sneak turnouts are atrocious, at the DLS sneak, there were 8 unique players
not to mention 10k Denver..what a joke
We used to have a reasonable group in Raleigh, N.C., honestly... anywhere from 4-10 folks coming out for draft once a week. Unfortunately the store we played at changed hands 3-4 times in 2 years, with inconsistent hours & some condition issues really killing things. I wasn't smart enough to get #'s and last names from a lot of the guys, so I am debating how to try and rekindle things... Not to mention the store stopped stocking product and kept telling people the game was dying (because people stopped coming when store conditions got bad and management thought it was lack of interest... sigh...). Oh well. I still have faith there is a sustainable group of 8-10 folks SOMEWHERE in the Triangle area, I just need to find them. :)
Our sneaks in NC are normally decent to good. DLS was ~45 or so, and the last Marvel Sneak I went too (X-men maybe) had around 70. There are people that play here... Keep the VS Dream Alive! And create more casual formats! I'm going to see how I do pushing Big Deck with some friends we scared off early with PCQ and 10K testing.
My store had about 8 people that came in and played almost every afternoon regardless of what was going on. A few more when we got the YuGiOh players to change over. I know Yadda Games had a big draw of card players when I could make it there. And a place I wont name got around 25 every Saturday for Hobby League, and about 4-10 on the Friday before hand. Just sitting around watching TV and playing I can get about 6 people on any given week to play at my kitchen table. Comic Book world has had at least 4 people everytime I went there to play. We are working on getting that number up with the Hobby League. The funny thing about all of it is, I might see 3 of the same people at any of those places, the rest of the time I see all new faces at each location.
we have a pretty large vs hobby league in central florida with players rangeing in all ages and about 9 to 15 players attend the only thing hurting us is the lack of hobby kits we get and usally end up giving away packs of there choice.... it's all good
