I think that random prizes in booster boxes would be awesome. things such as pc points, voucher for free T-shirt/playmat/deckbox/etc., Ultra-rareish EAs , to boost collectibility in the game.
but I would personally like the free PC points in a box. at the bottom could be a slip you input to your UDE membership and earn a PC point. make hard to get though, like say 1/30 boxes. same goes for the other shwag.
Lemme see if I can be a bit more verbose for you, then. The phenomenon of boldness in internet-based semi-anonymity is well-documented. (Fairly inapplicable in my case because people who know me in real life can attest to me being just as mouthy and combative in person as I am in text, but that's me. I wonder how lesser people do the whole "meek" thing...)
I am thus wondering what happened to said phenomenon in your theory, which relies on people running home and crying to mother that the bad person was all dismissive at them, rather than what usually happens on the Internet, which would be comparing me to Hitler or something.
That's what i was saying?
Really?
Wow again!
Your powers of argument interpretation are second to none!
If it weren't for your post, I would have gone on thinking that I wasn't at all commenting on what takes place everyday, but rather what should take place...
Your unique perspective on the harsh reality we live in has removed my rose coloured glasses and opened my eyes to the bitter reality that prominence is all that is required to justify presence.
Who cares if unconstructively critical posts contribute even less to the thread than the posts they aim to stifle (often for that same reason)? It doesn't matter whether or not they're terribly hypocritical because they happen all the time!
chdb has a habit of crapping on peoples rainbows........ why can't we just fantasize about awesome Vs. shwag? just once without someone calling "unfeasable" or "uneconimcal"? It's a fantasy thread for crying out loud! not what would be the most efficient way to promote the game without overstepping UDE's budget or boundaries thread.

Hmmm, I really do like the points idea. It would have to be watched veeery carefully to prevent abuse, but I don't see why it wouldn't be "feasible". Nonetheless, I think UDE would hit a larger audience with the uber rare prize cards idea highlighted by a load of members thus far, as not all players have pro aspiritions...
Also, as a fanboy, Tchalla's gear idea sounds great too.
Hmmm, they could always go with the generic reward program approach. Collect so many box tabs/ scratch cards/ wrappers etc. ---> receive free or discounted packs.
Admittedly, it's not nearly as cool an idea as toting Cap's shield though. ;)
at the same time, i don't really like the idea of pirate/ninja/monkey point cards in each pack, like they do with WOW, because it seems really counterproductive in draft. like if you're in a draft, and you open up the ultra super rare captain america with the scratch box on it, you know you've won his shield or something, there's NO WAY you're gonna pass it. in fact, you probably erupt in joy, ruining the draft for everyone else as tables and chairs go flying.
EDIT: although i really like that idea, too lol. if each set has one marquee character, MTU - Spiderman, WF - Batman, then that set could give away some kind of cool replica item for that character...if not a replica of thor's hammer or cap's shield, then a cool comic bust/statue of the figure. and it would be just like 3 for the entire print run....with the rest of the prizes being like i was saying, a year's mail order subscription to the comic, or a free box or free packs, maybe 1 PC point per case distribution, and then EA cards autographed by the artist, etc.
We have a winner. Limited Edition Superhero Accessories. I had been trying and trying to think of something that would be massive, like the turtle thing in WoW. Aside from sketchagraph cards, this is the ticket. Full size replicas of Cap's Shield and Batman's Utility Belt and Longshot's wig and Ollie's hat. And masks. The accessories can correspond to the characters in the individual set.
We have a winner, I tip another glass to you sir. (This time it's coffee.)
it was so much easier to do in lord of the rings TCG, though...everyone carried a sword in that game. in VS, not every superhero has an identifiable accessory you can replicate and sell. like Stu said, what does batman have, a utility belt? that's not quite as visible....maybe a batarang. cap's shield is the one that's obvious, thor's hammer just a bit less so, Green Lantern's ring comes to mind, but other than that, what superhero has that kind of accessory?
Like the idea of free "something" especially if it rewards you for buying more of their product. I believe a good program would be sending UPC from packs similar what many other companies do. Have different levels of prizes for the amount send. Basically the more UPC you send the better the reward.
The rewards should be VS geared such as special cards, playmats, shirts, and such with VS logo and characters from latest sets or so.
That is my idea and waiting to see how cb.. (whoever) can moan about this idea being so bad.

In real life, at hobby league or a PCQ or just one day they came into the shop and observed a player being mouthy and combative, you would never know that they were turned off by the dismissive personality. They would just go to another shop or find another group to play with or play at home.
Mouthy combative dismissive people kill communities. The "meek" players might not actually run home and cry to their mothers, some of them have girlfriends and wives. One thing is for sure... they will avoid the scene rather than deal with the dickery.
I don't understand the need to be mouthy and combative and dismissive. Especially when trying to build and maintain a player base for a trading card game.

The problem with this idea is that all random elements in a pack of collectible cards have to be accounted for in the legalese. There's a reason that each pack of collectible game cards lists the exact contents ("this pack contains 10 common cards, 3 uncommon cards, and one rare, plus has a one in 456 chance of containing an ultra rare") - it's the law. Otherwise it's technically gambling in a legal sense (as opposed to just being the plain old gambling we all know it is).
I'm not saying it's undoable, but in realistic terms it means that either all random prizes have to be of equal opportunity (IE, there's one voucher card that can be for a PC point OR a playmat OR an ultrarare EA, et cetera) or that there has to be a ####load of legalese on each pack. The former makes the "prize" structure equivalent and thus possibly a little bland (because you don't want one of the prizes to be way better than the others); the latter is something any smart company wants to avoid because lots of legalese on your product is a sales turnoff.

I don't really agree. Sorry, but - look, I have shelves stacked with graphic novels and trade paperbacks in my apartment and longboxes filled with a complete run of Legion of Super-Heroes, and I go to at least one or two cons every year. I'm a comics fan. And there's no way I'd ever want a frigging replica shield or even a Legion Flight Ring.
I'm not necessarily representative of the market, I admit, but - consider those busts and statues and suchlike that get advertised in Diamond all the time. Comic shops generally get those either on special order by request (if they're small) or get maybe one apiece (if they're really big) because they're by nature niche items within an already niche market. There just aren't a lot of people who want a replica Mjolnir, and I'm not sure how high that number raises if you make the replica Mjolnir quote-unquote free.
I like cards as the swag in a loot system because they're the one thing guaranteed to appeal to everybody. People who buy cards will always want more cards, be they rare cards they couldn't get their hands on previously, or limited-edition cooler versions of cards (EAs, pencil-sketch cards, holographics, edible cards, whatever). At absolute worst, you get additional trade fodder.
Hmmm, I really do like the points idea. It would have to be watched veeery carefully to prevent abuse, but I don't see why it wouldn't be "feasible".
It doesn't have to be watched carefully at all to prevent abuse; just cap it. Nobody can ever get more than X PC points lifetime through loot renewal. (The obvious cap is ten points; "yes, if you buy enough VS, you can go to a PC *once*, but after that it's on you.")
This is a given. The idea was not just for "exclusive comics". The bigger picture was some type of loot card system, comics was just a suggestion of what could be done. This thread gives more and probably better examples.
I feel at this point we're just going around in circles because we agree on the main point (a reward/incentive system is good) and disagree on a minor element of that point (the effectiveness of "exclusive" comics as an element of said system).

I still feel any type of increase in sales... short-term or otherwise, will help. The fact is, if the product is not financially viable to produce... UDE will probably stop producing it.
Obviously, but I think we should want to encourage expenditure of assets in ways we think wise.
