Aren't there pro athletes who had short careers but are also HOF'ers due to their contributions?
I can't say with 100% certainty, but I don't think so. The problem is that, despite a sport's player's flash-in-the-pan greatness, a "career" player will often get the nod because of his longevity. Voters tend to have the attitude that "he deserves it more."
Nothing against Yip. He is everything you say. But Hall of Fame material?
How? He decided to switch games, and neither of us have any information about his reasoning. You might like to hear Duncan having hissy fits all over the forums, but I don't. It was a cheap shot and I called it like I saw it.
Just for the sake of doing it (based on PC results):
57 people who have top 8'ed
15 people who have top 8'ed more than once (De Rosa, Hoh, Justice, Kockott, Leader, Oldaker, Prosak, Reeves, Spears, Walls and below 5)
5 people who have top 8'ed more than twice (Wijaya, Jacob, Dalton, Hager, Jones)
2 people who have top 8'ed more than 3 times (Wijaya, Jacob)
1 person who has top 8'ed more than 4 times (Wijaya)
(apologies if I missed anyone).
If Vidi top 8'd Indy 04, I'm pretty sure he's the best player for life. It takes real skill to top 8 an event you didn't even play in...
1) Vidi Wijaya : The current all time leading money winner. The current all time leading PC top eighter. Back to back to back PC finals. The most succesful player in the game.
2) Jason Hager: Consistant top eight/money finisher at every event he attends. Has created a multitude of decks that have shaken and have shapened vs. The best deck builder in the game.
3) Adam Prosak: 6(5?) 10k Top Eights. A recent PC win(as well as another PC top 8) and he still has the time to create a format? This guy loves vs. Likely the nicest and most aproachable profesional player on the circuit. Always there for a pick up game or draft. One of the best all around Vs players in the game.
I think a hof should be about contributions to the game as much as it is about accomplishments. My hall of fame votes will not be for people that just show up to tournaments to win money and give nothing back. My personal HoF has 5 people that absolutely love the game. I also didn't vote for myself; Mark McGwire doesnt get to vote himself in.
PS Im not on 'roids
Given an initial class of 5, here are my five votes.
5. Doug Tice - If the top 8 is on the line, who is the last person you want to see across the table? Doug ranks a solid #2 on my list, behind another person on my list. Doug has one of those rare combinations of being ultra-competitive and super-friendly. Combine this with a stint on Metagame, and you have a allaround superstar.
4. Tim Batow - I'll admit it. Tim Batow put me on tilt for about 6 months, after he beat me in the finals of 10k Vegas with a terrible My Beloved deck, then did a handstand to celebrate his victory. However, my lasting impression of Tim is from Saturday night at GenCon Indy '05 about 4-5 hours after a grueling Pro Circuit. I thought I was a supergamer by playing some Magic at midnight, but Tim was trying to get a game with his Jericho/Masters of Evil deck.
3. Michael Jacob - If Doug Tice is the second to last person you want to play against, Mike is definitely the first. It's a little known fact that the single article with the greatest number of hits on this site is the only article Mike has ever written. It's a shame he doesn't write more. I almost didn't vote for him because of his abrasive personality, but if you realize that it's just his way of getting his point across, you can learn alot from Mike. During my time on TDC, I learned a ton from Mike, simply by arguing for hours about various Vs related things.
2. Tommy Ashton - This is my Gary Wise vote. Gary's magic accomplishments, while not insignificant, were not enough to put Gary in the HoF. I feel the same way about Tommy. He's always a presence at the PC, and has come agonizingly close to the Top 8 multiple times, despite not having a top tier team to work with. However, Tommy's writing puts him way over the top. He can write an article in 30 minutes and have me talking about it for months. I personally use as many Kree puns as possible. my favorite obviously being Coldstone Kreemery.
1. Jason Hager - Jason Hager is R+D's worst nightmare. If you leave open a small crack, even one that's been in print for years, Jason will crack it open and break something. If R+D doesn't crosscheck every card they print against every combination of cards in existence, Jason will. My favorite Hager story was from PCNY, when Jason agreed to show Nick Little one card from his deck. When Jason revealed a Glorioius Godfrey, a legend was born. Jason was the mastermind behind the Ivy League deck, and I'm sure you had to look up what Vanessa Fisk did after Jason's Sunday appearance at 10k Columbus last november. Another person I wish would write more, Jason's report from the 10k Columbus when he unveiled Evil Medical School is often mentioned as the best tournament report of alltime. Instead, we'll have to live with seeing his work in our beloved banner.
In addition to being great players, all of these people are genuinely good people that have given back to the game. These people are what make the Pro Circuit enjoyable.
Honorable Mention: Alex Shvartsman, Dave Spears, David Leader
I thought MJ wrote 2 articles his Superman Blue report and one for Avengers too.
Either way I'm not going to argue your statistics.

Admittedly I've calmed down since. Losing your entire playgroup sort of sucks.
