I have to say that I am a fan of the lack of Pc's. I was disgusted the first time I heard of people letting their friends win, just to have more of their own 'team' in the pro circuit.
That was horrible and UDE did the right thing in my eyes by doing away with that.
That said, will I miss PCQs? Yes, I'll miss seeing my pals from further away and not getting to play against them, but honestly, with next to no PCQs that isn't even worth the complaint, any way. Now with none, it isn't a factor. We'll see each other at City Champs and such I'm sure.
(W/o reading the whole thread, just the first post...)
I would definitely play in a PCQ w/ no money prizes. The only way to get people like me to go to a PC is if most of us are qualified and willing to go split a hotel room and hang out with each other up there. Just one or two local good players that got qualified won't be enough, and I hate to say it, but I'm not a first-name-basis with everyone who qualifies for a PC in the KS/MO area. I think the change to ratings will lower PC attendance greatly.
It took me 1.5 years and probably 15 pcq's before I won any money. Yes, I would play in them. I actually tried to get a discussion about this in the other thread. My statement was that in Florida, 100's of people show up for regionals where the only prize is an entry to the national championships. I know that our player base is smaller, but it seems that it would work for vs too.
I'm hoping that the city championships turn in to this. Hopefully with the stores being able to run them and earn the admission price, more stores will be willing to run the tournaments.
The driving distance may play a part for many people. How far are you willing to travel in order to play in a points only pcq? I was travelling 2.5 hours, and I would continue to do so. The thing I hated about PCQ's was when I had to play one of the guys from the store after travelling 2.5 hours. I want to go to play other people. $$$$ or no $$$$.
On a separate note: UDE, can you fix mantis so that I don't have to play my son every time we play in a draft. Apparently there's something that matches our last names to play each other. It's happened with every tournament in every draft event. Swiss it doesn't, but draft it does.
I dont care what they do so long as they continue having tournaments that people play competitively in. Of the 4 money PCQs I went to, I won 3 of them (I had 0 PC points prior to this, all of the pcqs had 15-30 person turnouts.) I dont think I'm going to get any VS environments more competitive then them, although it was generally the same people at every one (PA, Philly Area.) Sadly we may lose some of the "Pros" since no cash prize is being offered. So long as more people replace those who will not go to the noncash tournaments, all should be well.
I would absolutely show up as long as the prizes weren't 10 PC points and an EA. I am not asking for much...just saying 4 hours in the car for travel total warrents a little bit more than an EA once you have your PC points.
Let's see ...
I played Yugioh and Yu Yu Hakusho competitively for 1 year, and the most either of them paid for a major tournament was a labtop and a card (I refused to play a $10K of DC Modern in 2005 so that was my only Shonen appearance) or $1,000 (Yu Yu Hakusho 1 of only 4 regionals in the US) so I would have to say ABSOLUTELY.
Focusing efforts on restoring HL is absolutely necessary. But there needs to be an outlet locally for more competitive play other than a City Championship once every 3 months or HL will be nothing but cutthroat play and drive all of the new/casula players away again.
Edit: I've played VS semi-professionally for about 2.5 years and I just won my first cash prize last weekend; $50 from a four-way split at our PCQ. As for playing in PCQ's, I've played in every PCQ in St. Louis that Pastimes has held since the game's conception except for the times they scheduled one the same weekend as a Pro Circuit, which happened all 4 times I attended one (although I didn't Q for PCLA 05.) I've also attended PCQ's in Springfield, MO, Kansas City, and Louisville.
Yeah, Id play in a no-money PCQ. Assuming the lack of a money prize would be made up for accordingly. Also....
Itd be great if we could keep the PC point system, but I read in that article that they are doing away with that, and PC invites will be based on rating alone. That said, it would be good if these new PCQs significantly contributed to increasing ones rating.... moreso than say, a random Hobby League would.
Hopefully that significant impact on rating points would affect only ones WINS and not ones LOSSES. Example: if I win a PCQ game against Bob, Id get more points than I would if I won that same game against him at a Hobby League.... but if I lose a PCQ game to Bob, I dont lose more points than I would if I lost that same game to him at a Hobby League. Comprende?
If this were the case, it would further attract new players to these PCQs because they have a win/win situation..... either get some extra "free" ratings points (from the matches you win) , or get great amateur prizes.
PCQ's are weighed more heavily than HL in Mantis. It's about 1-1.5 times the level of a HL (depends on level of head judge.) For example, I found in HL rating would change 3-5 points per win/loss, in PCQ's it was more like 7-10 points.
Another possible benefit of attending a PCQ, would be to test a new deck for the next PC.
Another words, watching people run the same decks from the past PC just to win money hurts the game. My friends didn't want to travel to a PCQ to play against 4 different versions of High Voltage. It gets pretty bad when you can sit across from the opponent and tell them which cards they will play.
"Oh, it's turn one, so you'll play electric eve. Then hit me for two, double evade, yeah, yeah, let's go to the next turn.
"Turn 2, you have Ape or Ratcatcher?" And advanced hardware, of course."
If we do what many, many people have said, and allow the pcq's to lead up to the pc, then pro's would have a reason to go. To test their decks. While it's great testing a deck in your playgroup, it's nothing compared to testing against people that don't know what's coming, and testing against people that don't know exactly how you play.
Would pro's come for the testing without the free cash they usually show up for? Would other people show up if they didn't already know what decks they would face all day? I think so.
There are a lot of people that play this game because it is fun, they enjoy competition, and they enjoy the company and commeraderie that can happen at such PCQs. Not everyone is a money-starved douchebag who needs to win to boost their egos and bank accounts. A lot of us are money-starved douchebags who just want to have fun playing the game we like.
We need PCQs, cash or cashless. They nourish the community.
Cost, I know that was a big issue for the kids at hobby league not wanting to go get slaughtered at PCQ's they knew they had little shot of winning...25 bucks a pop was too much even when we would drive them and pay for gas...
But like someone mentioned...Sneaks have the highest turnout and they have 0 cash prize...
I would play and encourage others to play...as long as the prize was pretty significant I am sure others would too....I mean the point of the PCQ was to get competition you cant find at HL....
PCQ was for us middle guys....I have too many points to be an amateur....but have never been to a pro event...I can win a hobby league with my eyes closed, so what do we do for competition? we go to the PCQ..
I know the pro's looked at them as a way to cash in and then scored again when they split them up....please bring back the ability to play both in one day....We made a day out of the drive, our TO was able to pull it off where you could play both sealed and constructed in one day...in smaller area's with less turnout playing 2 in 1 worked so much better and doubled the amount of players
