My first thought when they introduced raid decks for WoW was: 'Why can't they do something like that for VS?' It always seemed more in flavor to me that several teams would be needed to take Galactus or the Anti-Monitor down. And I am all about the flavor!
I may have to wait until fall until it becomes a reality ... but I am sooooo stoked that this is finally happening! This will seemingly be released soon after Marvel Origins. I wonder if there'll be some sort of tie-in between the two ... but I also wonder if there'll be a Giant-Sized DC deck as well to follow DC Origins. I do sincerely hope so!
The raid deck in WOW is cool, not only for the "we're going to get the crap beat out of us by some insanely broken cards" factor, but for the raid prep as well.
A lot of thinking has to be done by the members of your raid party beforehand to make sure all your bases are covered (you're in charge of health and regeneration, you're in charge of taking down the little guys, you're our beat stick, etc.). Everyone has a role. One falls, you all fall.
VS raid decks I'd like to see:
Murder World (Arcade)
Doomstat (Doom)
Galactus
Astroid M (Magneto)
Days of Future Past (Sentinel)
The Brood
Crisis on Infinite Earths (Anti-Monitor)
Hmm...seems a little heavy on the Marvel side. A little help here?
The superhero smackdown was done at our store. Of course we made up some cards to fit the format, but it was cool. We messed up a few of the rules, and we didn't build specific decks to battle it. There was definitely a ton of potential though.
It should be a blast to play and will be a boon to the casual environment. Raid decks are the only way I'll bother playing WOW anymore. I don't like the game a whole lot, but raids are a blast. I expect VS to be just as cool.
Just curious. Does Scott and the gang at UDE get props for this announcement? You bash them for all the other ones, so here's mine.
here's a question - in the Onyxia Raid deck, are all the ... I guess "Onyxia" cards ... Raid only, or are some of them also legal in standard constructed play?
the cards in the deck played by the player representing Onyxia are ONLY playable in the Raid setting. however, the Onyxia Raid Deck box set comes with 1 Onyxia Treasure Pack containing an assortment of cards from the 33 card Onyxia Treasure set. in the MMORPG, for killing Onyxia, you got awesomely powerful hats, so in the treasure packs you can get a specialized hat for each character class, as well as lots of other cool stuff (that is mostly playable in multiplayer games) and is all tournament legal in any format.
also DC raid deck possibility: Meggetto (WW3), Sun Eater (Final Night), Parallax (Zero Hour), etc. pretty much any 9-10 drop in the game could be a raid deck setting.
I'm pretty meh about the whole concept. I think their efforts could be better served on different projects, but I'm glad they are doing something. Hopefully they do a better distribution than they did for Hellboy (which is a phenominal product.)
When we initially tried the concept out... we wanted to use existing cards to make the format more portable so that anyone could play without the need for custom cards. The guys wanted to create Raid-specific cards but in order to accomplish that, UDE had to get behind it so that they could be widely distributed. If this is what they are doing with Giant-Sized VS... that would be really cool.
In WoW, Onyxia Raid cards are also cross-compatible with the regular game (some of them are really good) so that will add to the normal VS card pool. I really want to see how they work this format and what type of rules they are using.
And I would like to personally thank you for doing so much of the legwork. You surely made their job a helluva lot easier by starting that thread and providing such a solid base for them to work from. Your name sucked, but monkeys aren't ever very good at poetry.
This is exciting stuff, and it gets better with each post. I didn't realize that the raid cards were legal for Constructed.
