Im pretty sure the mephisto avatar is just the best one in any deck you can make, although spiderman3 might be alright.
Green Goblin and Venom are pretty blank, and I don't think the extra endurance is worth not having an awesome effect on Sandman/Hulk.
Exhaust Spiderman and DocOck have powerful effects, but they aren't as good as Mephisto or Spiderman3, and you start at lower life regardless.
It's really a shame nobody owns mtu cards in AZ, as I think this would be fun. At least for awhile. In my experience, playing with vanguard cards is awesome for awhile, but loses its appeal quickly. Perfect for a one time only tournament.
Doesn't netherworld gift restrict you only to a character you don't already control, Paul?
That Venom is the most dangerous in my opinion. He eliminates about half of your opponent's formation, or at least formation options.
Hulk is scary too, that is a lot of endurance to have to take away. Goblin skipping turn 1 is also scary, and can be a lot of trouble for some decks. Turn 1, 2 resources, 3 characters and the syndicate equipment that gives out +3 ATK. can you imagine how nuts that would be?
I'm totally stoked and just can't wait to get some games in for this. My friend was just telling me yesterday that he had made a Magic Vanguard deck with the new format of Highlander 100 cards. I was saying how much I missed that.

One of the things to remember with Hulk though ... are the other Egos available that you might have to go up against.
One of the Spideys can force you to waste a back-up by keeping the person unexhausted. Sandman prevents your solo character from doing any stun damage, while Mephisto will probably never lose a character since you are stunning so few on your own. Also, Venom is going to be able to deal lots of breakthrough to you.
Don't forget that if you play hulk with say.. the freaking defenders for instance, your goal ought to be to swing multiple times to begin with, so it shouldn't hurt too bad to deal with a deck that recovers an extra guy, or a deck that gets to exhaust a guy for free during combat. Keep in mind that these cards are designed with theme decks already in mind. By trying too hard to think outside the box, players might miss the obvious answers.
I have an Underworld build that is all mtu and a defenders underworld, and a spider friends, and a sinister syndicate as well. Spiderfriends is my preferred, but underworld defenders is sickening. Drawing extra cards for the defenders underworld build is my favorite since it gains a lot of endurance really quickly. For Spider friends, it is the do not ready spiderman, since I use evaders and spiderman symbiote to trap attackers any way.
Hulk scares me because that is a lot of damage to try to deal out. In my underworld defenders deck, it only usually attacks with one guy a turn any way, though it has plenty of ready characters waiting to do silly things. And with soul survivor, you are clearing your opponent's field while doing it.
Spidey will be broken. Exhausting a character every turn and then using my exhausting/locking abilities.
Mephisto is also amazing. I think something out of the box wil end up winning these tournaments though, not your standard Spider-Man and Spider-Friends or Hulk and Defenders
a fun format would be for players to randomly pick an Alter Ego before each round, while using the same deck throughout the tourney :p
imagine the dismay of the Syndicate rush player getting Hulk, or a Spidey exhaust deck picking a virtual blank in, say, Venom... hmm, i think i would suggest this for one of our future HLs, hehehe.
Or you can go Raw Deal style (WaKo will like this):
You can run a regular Swiss but only the top player of each Alter Ego will advance to the top 8.
If there are more Egos in the future ... the 'diversity' rule is definately something worth stealing. I don't think WoW has a rule like that, but if there was ever a character that was deemed 'the best' ... I don't know how much people would like to see an all Paladin top 8 or something like that.
