I like buying boxes for a few reasons. The biggest one being that I like to open packs...and buying a box is cheaper than buying a pack at a time. Buying singles can be cheaper, but often ends up being more expensive after you end up getting charged ridiculous shipping fees for an envelope or two of cards. It's also frustrating trying to find the stuff you want in the singles market.
I don't see how buying singles isn't supporting the game. When I buy cards from an online store like Cards in Hand, I am supporting them. Who knows how many cases that guy buys in order to keep a stockpile of cards like he does.
My dad and I will still buy boxes, but after buying something like 7 or 8 boxes of x-men to only get 2 EoME, we vowed never to buy that many again.
Buy 4 boxes, Rest singles. If the single is too expensive, sub in something else until it drops in price.
Despite some sentiment here... a strong secondary market is very good for supporting the game.
When singles are high in demand, sealed product is high in demand.
This is illustrated by any set that sells well for any game.
I don't think anyone is not saying there isn't a needed for a strong secondary market, but it can't be stronger than the primary, especially when that primary market is what is driving production which is directly related to sells.
Single sales help individuals, but not the game on a whole and when people turn to that as a primary means they are crippling the game.
