Role Tag: Sidekick SLEIGHT OF HAND AND MISDIRECTION: Incapacitate. Smoke Cloud. FREE: Make a close attack targeting an opposing character occupying one of Illusionist's smoke cloud markers. Instead of damage, a hit character is given an action token
Design Notes: I was going to do this one tomorrow and reveal Frankenstein and Madame Xanadu today, but those two really feel like Thursday kind of dials y'know? For Wednesday, we have our final common generic. I wanted Illusionist to feel different from the Sorcerer and Sorceress. While they were designed to be representative of classic depictions of magic users, I wanted this guy to be a Zatanna/Zatara-esque stage magician.

Role Tag: Captain THIS IS HOW YOU PUT ON A REAL SHOW: Friendly Sidekicks can use Perplex, but may only use it to target another character whose combat values have not already been modified by a friendly use of Perplex this turn. MISDIRECTIONS AND FLOURISHES: Stealth, Perplex. At the beginning of your turn if no opposing characters can draw line of fire to Zatara, Shape Change and Super Senses until the beginning of your next turn. Otherwise, Zatara may use Perplex a number of additional times this turn equal to the number of opposing characters that can draw line of fire to him. MASTER OF MNEMONIC MAGIC: When you place your characters at the start of the game, you may turn Zatara to click 7. If you do, this game turn his dial counter-clockwise when he is damaged and clockwise when he is healed. This trait can't be ignored.
Design Notes: Speaking of the Zatara bloodline, let's jump ahead to our first Uncommon and the first Captain of the set. I believe the World's Finest dial still absolutely holds up, so it was difficult to not just copy that one with some added bonuses! I did my best to make mine feel different from that one by having his dial focus on putting on a show. A lot of this dial depends on the map and how you play him. He works really well with the Illusionist Sidekicks who can provide him with Smoke Clouds to hide in to get the Super Senses and Shape Changes, but when you're ready to put on a show Zatara can get nutty with Perplexes. With this dial, my goal really was to make him feel like completely different characters whether your playing him forwards or backwards or if he's hiding or ready to put on a show. I think I might have undercosted him a bit, but other than that Giovanni is one of my favorites so far.
#m003 Magic Wand 10 Points EQUIP: Any UNEQUIP: Drop EFFECT: Equipped characters have POWER: Energy Explosion with Range 6 and - or - Range 4 and . // Effect: Magic Wand may be equipped to a character with the Mystical keyword during Force Construction by paying their point cost. Otherwise at the beginning of the game, you may replace one of your starting objects with Magic Wand.
Design Notes: So you have your Boots and Armor now, but what good is a fledgling mage without their Magic Wand? Though in this case, calling it a magic shotgun might be more apt. Following the path of Enlightenment laid out by wizards who spend their days fighting Dragons and delving deep into Dungeons, why learn other spells when Fireball can solve all your problems?

STITCH MYSELF BACK TOGETHER: Regeneration. Frankenstein can use Steal Energy with close or ranged attacks, but only when attacking characters with the Mystical or Monster keyword. HE ENJOYS HIS WORK MORE THAN HE'LL ADMIT: Super Strength, Blades/Claws/Fangs
Design Notes: A little later than I usually like to upload, but better late than never to wrap up the Commons of this set! Unfortunately, I had no idea what to do for Frankenstein here. As best as I could gather, he's a big monster that fights other monsters, so I did my best to show that.

I HAVE ALREADY SEEN THIS OUTCOME: Super Senses, Shape Change. THE CARDS FORETOLD THIS: Probability Control. When Madame Xanadu uses it, choose a number between 1 and 6. If at least one die shows the chosen number when rerolled by her, she may use Probability Control an extra time this turn.
Design Notes: Rounding things up is another member of the original Justice League Dark lineup. This dial was surprisingly hard to figure out. I wanted to give her a souped up version of Probability Control. I had a crazy complicated power all planned out, but in the end decided what she ended up with was far more to the point and easy to understand.
Dang, I read the Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. and didn't have a good takeaway of who he was and what he did. Not a great run, imho. Fun dial, all the same!
So Madame Xanadu. I have no idea what role she functions in the comics (was she original a horror/mystery comics host like the Cryptkeeper?), but that's a damn fun dial you've made for her. 10/10, would make an excuse to use.

First, thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the dials!
Second, I've had all of two real exposures to Frankenstein. The initial JLD run and the Rebirth Superman run. I enjoyed both comics, but have absolutely no idea who he's really supposed to be. I think writers tend to have the same problem.
Madame Xanadu has always been in a weird spot where her role shifts a lot. Initially she was the host for the (incredibly short lived) Doorway to Nightmare comic, so you hit that nail on the head. She's supposed to be Nimue from Arthurian legends, so she tends to have a lot of overlap with related characters like Jason Blood and Etrigan. The only time her character was really any kind of standout for me was in her tenure as a professor at Mystik U. Honestly, it was almost enough for me to try to figure out some form of Captain mechanic for her to represent that.

HE NEVER COMES BACK QUITE THE SAME: During force construction you may place any number of Resurrection tokens on Solomon Grundy's card. Solomon Grundy costs 50 points plus 50 times the number of tokens on this card. At the beginning of the game if there's a Resurrection token on this card, roll a d6. Solomon Grundy gains the corresponding effect until you roll again. Whenever Solomon Grundy would be ko'd if there's a Resurrection token on this card, instead remove one, place him on his first click, and roll a d6. Solomon Grundy gains the corresponding effect until you roll again.
1: Battle Fury and Close Combat Expert
2: Outwit and Leadership
3: Super Strength and Sidestep
4: Plasticity and Poison
5: Forceblast and Quake
6: Impervious and Regeneration
Design Notes: So unless you count some of the generics, we haven't had any villains yet. Y'all want a villain? Solomon Grundy has been a longtime favorite of mine. Growing up watching my dad's copies of the Super Friends and my own watch through of JLU made me love the character. That said, I'm not super crazy about his appearance in JLD. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike him, but it's just not my favorite version. The Tornado's Path on the other hand? That right there was a fun comic. I love the focus they put on Grundy's resurrections and how he changes each time he comes back. I did my best to mirror that here by giving him random effects upon revival.

SHOW ME THE PATIENT: Phasing/Teleport, Sidestep. Passenger: 1. NIGHTMARE NURSE, MYSTIC M.D.: POWER: Choose an adjacent friendly character and roll a d6. Heal the chosen character the result -2 (minimum 2). If the chosen character has the Mystics keyword or team ability, heal them equal to the result.
Design Notes: Man, what was it with the New 52 JLD being hard for me to dial? I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do with Nightmare Nurse, healing focused support piece, but it took me a while to hammer this one out. I'm honestly not really a fan of support. I've never liked it. Her special power is how I genuinely think it should be by default. I don't like eating up an action to attack a friendly character to maybe not even get to heal. Especially for characters like this whose whole purpose in dial and in comic is to heal people.
#m008 Magic Helmet 10 Points EQUIP: Any UNEQUIP: Drop EFFECT: Modify attack +1 and gain an additional (MAX: 3) // Effect: Magic Helmet may be equipped to a character with the Mystical keyword during Force Construction by paying their point cost. Otherwise at the beginning of the game, you may replace one of your starting objects with Magic Helmet.
Design Notes: What good will your enchanted armor be if you don't protect your noggin? In a totally unbiased study recently conducted, an astounding 98% of mages die due to head related injuries. Don't let this happen to you. Our Magic Helmets look stylish and totally protect the wearer*, while our patent pending enchantments increase mental acuity.
*Our attorneys require me to state that these helmets absolutely have not been proven to better protect you. The enchantments are totally legit though.
FAMILIAR: Mastermind, but may only target an adjacent friendly character with the Mystical keyword. Unique Modifier - While adjacent to only one friendly character with the Mystical keyword, once per turn, you may add 1 to the result of any roll made by that friendly adjacent character.
Super fun & flexible Solomon Grundy! I honestly don't know much about the character outside of Long Halloween, the Justice League animated series, and Arkham City, so I was fascinated to hear there are such variances in his appearances. Crafty dial for playing that out!
Also, full agree on Support. It should work like Nightmare Nurse's SP.

I'm glad you dig the dials! If you ever get the chance to check out Brad Meltzer's Tornado's Path he focuses a lot on that. Unfortunately, this dial kind of spoils the criminal mastermind behind the story, but I think it's still worth reading. It's not the greatest JLA story of all time or horror related in the slightest, but it was the inspiration behind this dial.

Design Notes: Today feels like a generic kind of day, so let's finish off the generics for this set. First up is the Angel. Out of all the generics in this set, these are the most straight forward. They deal penetrating damage and hit things until they die. When working on the Demon dial I realized there was no unifying keyword for Angels and Zauriel, so here we have (I think) the only keyword I made up for this set. And, as you probably guessed, their sculpt would likely be a spin on Zauriel's.

Role Tag: Sidekick INFERNAL DEAL-MAKERS: Perplex. When Demon uses it to target another friendly character they may modify the chosen value except damage by +2 instead. If they do, at the beginning of your next turn, deal the targeted character 1 unavoidable damage. UNIQUE MODIFIER - When Demon uses it to target an opposing character and positively modifies a combat value, deal that character 1 damage at the end of that controlling player's next turn.
Design Notes: The Demons definitely need a little more thought behind them than some of the other generics. Do you just use the Perplex? Do you super charge a friendly character? Or do you risk making your opponent stronger with the promise of their eternal soul over a game of plastic super heroes further down the line?
These guys would be patterned after Blue Devil.
