I think that just mentioning the term "southern rock" will probably gain me a bit of ridicule and avoidance. I suspect that my good friends Velvetguru (pretty sure) and Captain Beyond (maybe/maybe not) and others don't really love the genre. I've always felt this a little unfair and think at least a couple of these bands were/are impressively progressive. But today I am listening to them a bit and feel like sharing.
Oh, I was always a big fan of Southern rock, Country rock and stuff in between. Loved Marshall Tucker Band, Skynyrd, Pure Prairie League, Blackfoot, Charlie Daniels Band, Elvin Bishop, Molly Hatchet, you name it. My preferred ZZ Top is before MTV. I remember watching Don Kirschner one night and it had Black Oak Arkansas on and my stepmother came home and Jim Dandy Mangrum was performing with tight pants on that did nothing to hide his very large member and my stepmother began yelling at me that I should have gone to some concert that was happening downtown that night because she was embarrassed by what she saw. I have a live Outlaws album stored away that has two album sides dedicated to Green Grass and High Tides by itself. It would have been Destructo Boy's worst nightmare. He probably hate the Allman Brothers Live at Filmore East too.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
You often see debates on the origins of musical styles which seem to be shrouded in mystery such as what the first rock and roll songs were. Some make a case for Rocket 88 by Ike Turner, most people like to point to Chuck Berry. I tend believe it was Sister Rosetta Tharpe but who knows? There's other contenders out there that I haven't thought of.
Another argument is who was the first Heavy Metal band. A lot of people point to Black Sabbath though I saw an interview with Rob Halford where he says Tony Iommi doesn't feel that way, so he named Judas Preist though I think he did that with tongue in cheek so to speak. The term itself was used in Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf where they say "Heavy Metal Thunder" though I think that song is referring to big motorcycles. The term itself is lifted from a novel by William S. Burroughs called Naked Lunch.
At any rate a lot of people point to a San Francisco band named Blue Cheer. They definitely weren't light though I linked a song earlier by them featuring them using a sitar that I consider a major candidate for any Hippie mix I might want to make. that wasn't particularly heavy but their version of this song sure is and later when I have more time I'll add other links by them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as1NcX31szs

I've definitely heard of Blue Cheer's Summertime Blues and it is heavy for 1968, it was also my favorite of the three.
VelvetGuru9 shared this with me awhile back and I thought it was pretty good for 1970! Kingdom Come (Full Album) - Sir Lord Baltimore
I also wanted to mention that Freedom of Speech is the song that replaced Cop Killer when Body Count's first album got pulled from the shelves. I love the Hendrix sample and the spoken word sample by the Dead Kennedy's Jello Biafra. For me, Jello Biafra walked so Zack de la Rocha could run. Ironically, the burning monk image on RATM's first album cover, I remember first seeing it in a DK album insert collage.
Wishing for competitive Judge Dredd figures for Modern Age...WizKids are you listening?!?!
I enjoyed this film because it includes the fascinating concept of hating your own interests because your interests are so obscure that they can be isolating.
Also my first introduction to Scarlett Johansson, who I never thought would be the big star to emerge from this film - although Thora Birch probably would have if her career hadn't been derailed by her crazy father/manager.
This thread was started for anyone who listens to any kind of music. I recently noticed that it's been viewed thousands of times, and that's a good thing. After all, it is about sharing music with everyone, so it appears someone is watching and maybe seeing songs they like.
I would like everyone to feel free to share. You don't have to be a music expert of any kind, you don't have to like any particular genre, you don't even have to comment on why you posted the song. Of course some of us will enjoy different songs more than others, but so far I haven't seen anyone actually criticize a person for posting a song. It seems to really be a place to find new music, share musical memories, and occasionally give each other good natured grief.
As an example, I will now post songs from my favorite band/genre that gets mixed results.
I imagine that everybody who sees this, are fans of superheroes and comic books. It stands to reason that people who enjoy superheroes and comic books would also be fans of Science Fiction, fantasy and horror respectively. I found out that's not always the case but it seems practical to me. I would think metalheads in particular would be partial to horror but maybe I'm wrong. I know I like to read books of those three genres,
One of my favorite Science Fiction authors is a man named Philip Jose Farmer who wrote an interesting series called the River world series, the first of which is called To Your Scattered Bodies Go.
The premise of the River world series is that everyone who ever lived prior to 1985 is resurrected on a huge world with a a river that winds snakelike around the world several times from South to North pole and back again.
His main protagonist in the stories is Sir Richard Burton (the adventurer not the actor). Sir Richard Burton is the only one who suspects what's really going on because before he was officially resurrected he wakes up in some kind of test tube in a huge laboratory and sees shadowy figures doing strange things and he remembers this when he's officially resurrected. He cooks up the idea of killing himself so that he will get resurrected in other parts of the world and he uses this as a means of exploring Riverworld.
After Farmer finished the series there was a collection of short stories where other authors were invited to play in the Riverworld sandbox and one of them wrote a story in which John Lennon was the protagonist and Jim Morisson was the cult leader adversary.

Do y'all have thoughts on this?
This has been discussed earlier in this thread but I'm thinking we should allow references to any fictional characters. Frank Zappa has done a song called King Kong for instance.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
Frankenstein, Godzilla, Little Red Riding Hood, if it were opened up.
But I think Skullbrother would prefer pure comic stuff, which he covered in amazing detail so far. If nothing else the noms could start as purely comic, then open it up later if people had trouble filling all the slots. But my bet is that we probably could do a 64 song contest purely comic themed. May need to sleep on it to remember more comic references.
I feel like there has to be a good amount of Nerd Rock that I haven't uncovered yet in the wake of the MCU juggernaut. Although I am also including that Public Enemy song that just has one line about Thor and a couple lines about Namor.
It seems criminal to exclude Prince while including groups like Ookla the Mok. I have respect for Ookla the Mok, but their Venn circle of content essentially overlaps with filk.
EDIT: Don't ask why this comes to mind... weezer's "In the Garage"
