To sidetrack: what's not to love about the "stupid chrome jellybean"? I think it's awesome.
Then again, I always did have a distorted view of myself, and that thing reinforces distorted views of oneself!
Um, maybe that fact that it's a stupid. chrome. jellybean.
I know you're all going to be shocked here, but I don't think every/anything is ART.
In my high school they had this program where you could work in the Art Department. It was like a graphic arts studio right in the building and I learned a lot about having a job before I had one in the real world.
Anyway, one of our responsibilities was setting up the Art Show.
As we did, we, among ourselves, referred to the pieces as either Art or BWS. That stands for Big Weird Crap.
BWS takes little to no talent, usually involved spraypainted mannequins, and for some reason was always made by someone we KNEW to be a Hop Head.
The bean has two out of three. And even though I don't know for certain, I'm betting that the 'artist' is a hop head.
I have no idea why the talent required to create something is a criteria in whether or not it's good.
Always seemed like a strange, knee-jerk reaction looking for a way to put something down that people don't like, instead of just saying why they didn't like it.
That said, I like the bean becuase it looks cool. I don't care if it's art, Art, or whatever. It's fun to walk around, looks nice in profile in the park, and is unusual and interesting.

Ever see it up close? It's a cool effect.
SIDE NOTE: Bravo's "Work of Art" competition to find the "best" new artist should not exist. It is fundamentally flawed.

It's not a knee jerk reaction. From my point of view BWS is a knee jerk reaction. "Wow, it's big and weird. Oooooh. Aaaaaah."
Oddly, people do that same thing with Clix all the time. I've had, over the years, bystanders in comic stores look at the table and ask about Sentinels or Sinestro or any of the other big figures that I tried desperately to work for me, and ask. "Wow. What's that? Is that, like, super powerful?"
It stands out from the rest and is different and people have a knee jerk reaction of ascribing power or import to it.
The Girl is in love with the darn thing. She's only taken a BILLION pictures of it, so, while I actually haven't seen it up close, I get the idea.
Besides, we have old film footage of me as a toddler sucking on the bumper of my dad's '71 Chevelle. I think I get the effect.
Hey, if you like the bean, great. Maybe it will keep people coming into Chicago to see it, bring up city revenues, and the sales tax will finally go down some.

I could go on about that show-- particularly the guy finalist whose work was *exclusively* the stuff Haven was going on about-- thank god he didn't win.
And yeah, my chief problem (beyond Art Critic Speak) was that it favored the conceptual artists heavily due to the time crunch. I did like the work of the guy who won.
Haven: It's still a fallacy to judge art by the amount of skill or effort it took to produce, rather than the result. That's the knee-jerk reaction of which I speak.
Of course, I have no idea what art (if any) you do like, so I can't really say what your personal reacion is about. Perhaps you don't like large art objects of any sort. I guess that's valid.

I can't even bring myself to watch it. Just doesn't make much sense to me on any level.
Granted, it is only slightly different than things like "Top Chef" or other cooking competitions, but at least there it mainly comes down to "this looks/tastes better than the rest."

Then I remembered they're still up in Toronto, so I guess you mean Heroclix.
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!
