That actually sounds really fun, and your comment about the worst thing about Mafia is the players getting eliminated is something I've always noticed. I thought about just making all eliminated players into Dolphins and reeking havoc as ghosts, but I've never had a theme it would fit into
"Why would the possibility of me being wrong ever stop me from doing something?"
For no particular reason I wanna bring up my Simpsons game from (way) back in the day that never got started. I always kinda regretted that, because I thought it would have been kinda neat and addressed one of the things I like least about Mafia:
Being eliminated is a universally negative thing. You are not allowed to play any longer, you are not even allowed to post. You are done.
This isn't much fun.
The Simpsons game was supposed to be a simultaneous Mafia game and murder mystery, a la who shot Mr. Burns.
Eliminated players would be thrust into the investigation in a whole other game consisting of riddles, clues and interviewing suspects in a kind of adventure game conversation tree scenario.
Basically, eliminated players would be (hopefully) having as much fun as non-eliminated players, and be active until the end of the game, where people could guess Who Did It, Where and With What.
It was also meant to be a positive surprise for eliminated folks -- ideally those still playing would have no idea there was this whole sub-game going on under their noses, waiting for them to join up.
Now, a Mafia game would be going on all this time, but the players eliminated earliest would have the most potential information available to them unless they chose to share it. The winners would have the least information but would have won the Mafia portion.
Also, in a direct swipe from Rokk/Carlos type games I wanted to involve choices depending on what "season" we were on. I swear, there's nothing I like more than a weird PM from a mod asking me if I want to get on a mysterious time train that's pulled up...
Now that game never got off the ground 'cause it turned out to be just too much for me and I never really even thought of getting a co-mod. The only thing that actually ever happened was the puzzle I sent before the game started, where folks got sequences of a message and the first to get it got...I think it was immunity to lynching in the first day? Something like that.
Sigh. I really should have recruited someone who was more comfortable with the Mafia mechanics type of thing to work on actual roles and such.
Yes. Would have been fun. Missed opportunities for fun. Nothing sadder.
That simpsons game does sound pretty awesome. Can't lie. I hope to run a number of different takes on mafia games in the long run, I just want to get my feet wet in running them first.
For instance, the fighting game character game I intend to run will have no deaths whatsoever.
I apologize to Darq & Thawmus (and anyone else) if I said anything that offended them, that was certainly not my intent. Please feel free to PM me if you need clarification.
