Yep, read it earlier this year. Thought it was pretty good. Looking forward to the movie. I'll probably pick up "Armada" by Cline eventually. The synopsis reminds me of "The Last Starfighter."
Ready Player One was a fantastic book. Armada is kind of a mash-up of Last Starfighter and Ender's Game, good but not half as good as RPO.

I didn't like it so much. It seemed like there was a good story in there, but it was constantly covered with "here's another reference to the 80's!" This rebel teenager is a huuuuuuuuuuge fan of the 80's, what a coincidence! Only 80's kids will get this. etc. Subtle was not the name of the game.

This looks like an interesting read. I would like to track it down to read especially if there is a movie coming out and even more so cause it seems to have Simon Pegg in it. Though I am working on Terry Pratchett's Equal Rites (third discworld book and trying to go chronological from publication date) and am making a steady pace of about 5 pages before I start to doze off and the book smacks me in the face.
I am sure that if I find it before I finish the discworld book then my wife would probably read it in a day or two.
Thanks for the suggestions guys

I've found that whenever I've read the book first, I've almost always hated the movie (hate may be strong but I can't think of a movie I liked better that the book). There's the whole casting issue. Sometimes the actors are nothing like how you pictured the characters. The changes they almost alway make to the story distract me. I spend time thinking about how they will change the story and then if it's a good idea or not.
Catering to the lowest common denominator since Feb 2003.

The Princess Bride comes to mind as a movie as good as the book.
But you are right in that the movie rarely lives up to a good book, take Stephen King movies/books as examples.

Speaking of Stephen King, I semi-recently saw the latest version of Carrie. I kind of liked the approach they took--at this point, everyone knows how the story ends, so they actually start out with the police interviewing survivors in the aftermath, then jump back a week or so to the beginning of the story. There are a couple more alternating scenes of jumping forward, and while it does give away some of the characters that survive, I like the effect of seeing things finally start to improve for Carrie, then jumping forward to after it all goes to hell.
I believe there's a new tv series coming out based on The Mist. I'm not sure if I'm going to like that. It works well as a self-contained story, but I think expanding it to a tv series will likely kill some of the mystery.

I have not read it, but what about the short story that turned into the movie Shawshank Redemption? That movie was great, but I can't say that I have read the story.

I think that's a great example of a movie sticking to the story and being a good movie. It also reinforces my belief that in general there's just too much in a book to be replicated in a movie. So, a movie based on a short story is more likely to retain most of the elements.
Also in that book ("Different Seasons"), was "The Body", which became "Stand By Me". I don't remember that story as well, but I think it's another case where they did a good job of sticking to the written version.
I still need to see the movie version of Apt Pupil.

I agree with wintermute here, although the Shawshank movie still adds a lot that was not in the novella.
The Mist TV show is on Spike and Episode 10 is tonight I think. I have only watched the first episode.
I just finished the first two books in "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams and I'm finding it difficult to start on the third book, "Life, the Universe and Everything" because the first two books were damn tedious. I may just skip the rest of the series and catch the film, then move onto "Armada."
