Ma and Pa Kent die even earlier in Clark's lifetime?
--wyld
When our story opens, the Question is investigating an impossible locked-room murder mystery involving a midget and a 6'6"-tall call girl into heavy bondage. Don't worry, I'll explain later. It's all vitally relevant.

Considering the way they let Byrne pillage and sack the Superman mythos--throwing out longstanding elements like his Superboy career, Krypto, Supergirl, Kandor, his membership in the JLA, etc--I'm sure I'll be surprised at what they actually didn't let him do.

Maybe they didn't let Byrne make Clark less interested in females.
I always just considered Byrne's Superman to be yet another Earth, so that stuff never really bugged me. Only the impact to the Legion.
That's pretty much the way I dealt with it, too; and all the post-Crisis changes. They could say as much as they wanted to that Superman was never in the Justice League of America; I had boxes of comics that said otherwise.
I'm going to make a guess here, but one based on logic. If DC allowed Byrne to get rid of so many iconic elements of the Superman mythos, they must have said no to a change that would really affect the classic perceptions of Superman.

BoyBlunder and CuCr may be on to something, but in a reverse way for BoyBlunder.
I think it was the effects of Kryptonite being fatal. It'd never really been shown, so DC had Byrne write it that the planet of Krypton was already turning into Kryptonite and killing people. I think that was NOT the way Byrne wanted.
I think, instead, Byrne wanted one other survivor of Krypton to travel with baby Kal to earth, only to die from the effects of Kryptonite there on Earth when they were found.
I remember a bit of an interview with the bugger some years ago, about how he'd of written the Christopher Reeve script and that was one change he'd of made.
I will guess the other survivor was to be Kal's mother, Lara, as that makes sense. But being Byrne, it could've been Kara.

Damn it all, I think JTR is right. Reading his post reminds me of something I read somewhere a long time ago; I think Byrne wanted Lara along for the ride but to have died on reaching Earth.
Be funnier if they didn't allow Byrne to make Clark's first job to pay his way through college something to do with being a male stripper. Which is a story that would show how "Superman" came by that nickname/alias.

Dont' feel too bad if I am right. I only got that idea and 25% of a memory because of your posts and in part by BoyBlunder's post.
JTR has it right. Specifically, pregnant Lara is put in the rocket, and is exposed to Kryptonite and dies on Earth. I think he may have even planned that she go into labor sponteeously as a result (but I might be making that up). This was apparently over the line, but all the other changes weren't.
The idea was a) to show that Kryptonite can kill Kryptonians by example and b) to have Kal born on Earth. He still managed point b.

Not just on Earth, but in America.
Like the Elseworlds said, he was TECHNICALLY born in America and could thus run (and win) the Presidency.
Of course, now, it's back to a baby in the rocket isn't it????
