Mastermind redirects damage from an attack. There are a number of instances where a figure takes damage but the damage is not from an attack. These include (but are not limited to) pushing damage (say from Incapacitate), Mystics/CrossGen TA damage (the return damage is not an attack and thus will not cause a Mystics/CrossGen feedback loop if one Mystic attacks another Mystic), damage from specific feats (like Passenger, Pounce, Nova Blast, etc.) and Mind Control feedback damage. None of these types of damage can be redirected using Mastermind since they do not come from an attack.
I just wanted to add that if you choose to use Warlock as a taxi for the 'fessor as azs mentioned, adding the force field feat can give him Toughness on those Defend clix, making Warlock more Mastermind fodder-freindly.
No can do, Force Field goes on characters with no damage reducing powers on the dial.
Actually, Mastermind redirects damage dealt. As such, you can Mastermind damage from sources like Mystigen, Poison, and Earthquake.
ARGH! Okay, I looked through the PACs and FAQs (and am having an attack from it all) and I guess I can see the point of allowing shunting from Mystics/CrossGen. Mystics states that it cannot be reduced or evaded, but nothing mentions whether or not it can be redirected. So if you were to mastermind away Mystics damage the fodder would *have* to take it (or possibly MM it down the chain again to another fodder piece, assuming it had MM as well). I *personally* completely disagree with allowing Mystics/CrossGen damage from being masterminded to a lackey, but I've got nothing from the rules in print to disallow it. At least my other three examples were correct about damage that a figure cannot MM away.
*sigh*
I need to get new glasses that can read through things that are clear as mud.
