I enjoyed the latest issue of 52. Ralph Dibny is a Leaguer from way back when comics were at their most fun for me and seeing him get shaken up hurts a little, but there's something about it that draws me in.
Ralph is a good man. He's an interesting character to read and Todd Nauck's art on this issue really appealed to me (I'm an old Young Justice fan.) Where Ralph's story goes is an uncertainty right now and that, too, appeals to me. It makes me want to keep reading because I really hope he'll get not so much the "happy ending" but the conclusion a story like this deserves. In a way, it reminds me of Max Payne if any of you've played that game. Tragic story. Ends on a low note but ends well.
I don't want Ralph to die. I don't want Ralph to get his powers back. What I want is for Ralph to be the most human character we've got in this book, no gimmick, no sci fi guns, nothing like that. He's a man who's lost everything and that, in a way, makes him feel unique.
He's not comparable to Plastic Man anymore. By the time they're done, he may very well be reforged as an honest to God character we'll see in Brave and the Bold or Detective Comics. If I had my way, it'd be very rare that he interacted with any hero short of Ollie or Bruce again. Maybe the Birds of Prey.
What the gang did for Ralph in this issue was great. A group of friends, who brought their angel buddy along at their pal's request to go and investigate something that didn't seem quite right? It showed me real friendship. It's what I'd expect old friends like them to do. They have opinions, they disagree but they let the guy involved call the plays. Man, that made me smile. I have friends like these, friends that're there for me when my life falls apart.
Ralph's story is my favorite thusfar. Renee and "Charlie" come next and after that, Booster. This issue, however, also made me start to warm up to the slowly humanizing character of Black Adam.
Bravo, DC. Encore.
Joker die of cancer.
Ralph the new Joker. the 48 # macroevent. coming soon. next summer.
I figured the Joker would've died of that gunshot to the face he got a week or two ago.

Unfortunetly, Ralph is seen on the cover of an upcoming "52", apparently sane.
Also, Bruce mentions that he is currently unavailable in a former Batman comic, hinting that he's not crazy, just busy.
He may be sane, but I have a feeling that it might be due to a half-burned mummified corpse (or was it just a doll?) sitting in his bedroom closet that he lays next to in the fetal position at night.
The last issue of 52 didn't show any sign of recovery from that incident at all, he had obviously COMPLETELY lost it.

Well, that's the scene that is a bit confusing.
The way I read it, after he was shot, Batman carried him to the paramedics, and one of them said "He's still alive!", to which Batman answered by throwing him in the dumpster.
Not a very clear scene at all. Batman, despite his hatred, wouldn't do that to a living being, even if it WAS the Joker, but on the other hand, he's been pissed off by the Joker enough times lately that he probably wasn't above throwing him in there to die from the wound.

It was a straw (or maybe wicker) effigy with a mask and clothes. Wee bit more disconcerting than if they'd used a corpse. Heck, I'm still wondering that if there really had been a "resurrection" (reincarnation?) going on if Sue would've been trapped in the construct...
Meanwhile, anyone else wondering what "52's" Devem's connection is to the Pre-Crisis Dev-Em (who was erroneously thought to be Kryptonian, including by himself, for some time)?

I was just wondering when and where it was revealed that Dev-Em wasn't a Kryptonian? I have an issue of Tales of the Legion where Dev-Em is poisoned by kryptonite and received medical treatment from Mon-El, who reveals that Daxam seeded Krypton or Krypton seeded Daxam.

Take your pick - and Crisis - for poor Dev-Em's constantly changing origin.
At one point, shortly before CoIE, he was changed to Daxamite - but had a false "memory / history" due to psychosis (something that would be touched on again post-Five-Year-Gap reboot when Dev-Em was certifiably nuts) in preparation for what was going to be the "Superman reboot" of Crisis (this was when the Legion thought they were going to be able to at least use the "pocket universe Superboy" bit).
Post-CoIE he was Daxamite during the initial stages of the "5 Year Gap" but when Byrne said "No. Nada. Zip." on the "pocket universe" Dev-Em got a strange "update/change" in the pages of "Who's Who" where they decided to take a poke at Byrne's usage of Gladiator in the pages of "Fantastic Four" (as well as Byrne's attempts to explain Superman's powers as psionic in nature) - Dev-Em became a Titanian who's mental powers were used to give himself "Kryptonian-style / Daxamite-style" powers so long as he believed he was one and / or had faith in his powers.
The poor former "Knave of Krypton" never really got a firm foothold in anything (though way back in the days, yep, he was originally meant to be an escapee from Krypton. )
