I'm considering joining one or more games, but I'm not entirely sure what's going on.
Are roles assigned, or do you get to choose them? Can there be more than one of some or all of the roles? Who can you/can't you PM? Are there rules as to what you can say in a PM? What're you allowed to discuss during the day?
I don't want to start a game and then accidentally ruin it by saying, for example, "____ is the mob boss!" when I'm not supposed to.

Roles are given out at random unless you join a BYOC game.
Typically there is one of each character per game, but there are exceptions.
PMing depends on your role. Mafia can PM all they want with eachother, town cannot PM anyone (except in very specific cases)
During the day, you can discuss anything you want. Typically, who is evil and what you discovered last night.
If you find out someone is a mob boss, you say so (unless you are in the mob. Then you don't)
One more question: What if I miss something, for example, if I can't get to a computer for the day phase?
It happens. I've missed day phases. As long as its not a regular thing you should be okay. If you miss a lot of days and don't post often, it could be a problem. (You also run a risk of getting lynched if you are too quiet)
It is also important to be prompt with your night action PMs. You are much more likely to be mod-killed/replaced by not sending your actions then not posting (although both are important)

Since Magnito answered your questions already, I would like to welcome you to a fun game.
I was lost the first couple of games I played in. But after you get a few games under your belt things will start to click, maybe sooner.
Perhaps you should add questions to some of Domi's questions to it:

Also, I'd appreciate a list somewhere of less common roles, perhaps in a seperate thread. I've played in a few mafias now, but there are still roles coming up that I am unfamiliar with. You could then link to that thread from this one, so that curious newbies could read more if they wish.
Christ did not come to condemn the world, but to save it.
Question? What happens if a player is being lynched and his vote is stolen? Does the player being lynched vote to lynch himself?
Depends on the mod.
Nine times of ten it would be as you said, they would vote to lynch themselves and the vote would count.
I find it strange the realms still has the "no voting for yourself" rule. That rule was Peers' because he'd seen it do some crazy stuff, not one of the "core rules".

I assume it is there to prevent Jesters or people who don't die by lynches get to the night phase.
And to answer the initial question, in FMM3, I stole Madslaust's vote, and forced him to use it against himself, winning the game for me and Shadow. So yes, in some situations, it might work.
