“What the hell?!?” Arsenal yelled. “Your dad isn’t any nicer when he’s not Eclipso!”

“It wasn’t his fault, Roy” Cyborg said, picking up the fallen helmet.

“N-no!” Steve Dayton moaned “N-not my Mento Helmet. I…need that. Without the helmet, I’m not…special.”

Cyborg’s left eye scanned the helmet before he ripped a chunk of machinery out of the base. He held it out so the rest of the Titans could see.

“Cerebral inhibitor. Friend of my old man’s worked on one of these at Star Labs awhile back. Only this one’s a lot more complicated. I bet that’s how whoever’s behind this controlled Saladhead Sr.”

Already having the data he needed, Victor Stone crushed the device between his hands.

“You won’t have to look hard for the ones responsible” said Robotman as he approached the group. His metal body was dented and scratched all over but he was in one piece. “The Brotherhood of Evil is back.”

The duo stood over their fallen attacker.

“Kestral? What a crappy name.”

“Actually, Hank, a kestrel is a bird of prey, just like a –“

“A Hawk? That explains the costume. Too bad this guy couldn’t take a hit the way I can.”

Hawk grinned proudly. Suddenly, Dove felt a powerful hand grab her leg and pull her backwards. Before she could react, Kestral was up and holding her by the throat.

“Oh, you’d be surprised at how much punishment I can take, brother.” Kestral spat the last word as if he was ashamed to be associated with someone like Hawk but still wanted to remind him because he knew Hawk felt the same about him.

“Let her go!” Hawk bellowed.

“Why don’t you make me?” Kestral replied with a grin, pulling Dove in closer. Dove could feel his heart beating behind her. If she could only loosen the grip of his other hand…

Dove swung her legs forward, preparing to swing back and nail kestrel in the gut. Halfway into the motion, she felt Kestral’s clawed fist ram into the side of her face like a sledgehammer. Everything started to go fuzzy and the next thing she knew, she was laying on the concrete floor.

“Ow, ow, oooooow! That guy sure hits pretty hard…Hank?”

Hank Hall sat on the ground, head against the wall. His Hawk costume was gone and he was staring at the prone form of a man. It was the same dark haired man from before, the one who had spoken the magical word that turned him into a twisted version of Hank’s alter ego. The man’s neck was twisted all wrong as if someone with inhuman strength had snapped it. Dawn covered her mouth and her eyes started to tear up.

“I didn’t mean to” Hank stammered. His voice was all shaky and he didn’t sound at all like his usual overconfident self. “He set us up. Told me he was going to kill you and the rest of the Titans too. That he’d strike when we leasted expected it. So I hit him as hard as I could but right before I connected…poof.” He looked at Dawn for the first time since she had woken up. “No more Kestral, just that poor bastard.”

They sat in silence for a moment before Hank couldn’t take it any longer.

“This isn’t supposed to happen! We’re heroes! We’re supposed to protect people, not kill them! Christ, Dawn, what are we going to do?”

“I…I don’t know.”

“The thing you have to understand about Steve” Robotman started. Steve Dayton was asleep in the next room with Gar looking over him. The rest of the Titans needed to plan a course of action and to do that, they needed to know what had happened to the Doom Patrol.

“Is that he was completely in love with Rita. That’s the whole reason he became Mento in the first place, to get her attention and to be able to spend time with her. When she died a few years back, along with the Negative Man, Steve didn’t take it very well. Gar had such a hard life that he learned how to deal with tragedy even before he met the Doom Patrol. He’s not just the clown that some of you might think he is. All the jokes, all the impressions, the puns, those are all to keep his mind off the pain. Maybe it isn’t the best way to deal with losing two sets of parents but at least it’s a way. Steve didn’t have a way. When Rita died, Steve went a little nuts, went off searching the globe for the Brotherhood of Evil, wanting to get revenge on them for what they had done.”

“Now wait just a second” Nightwing interrupted. “What’s all this about Rita Farr dying? We all saw her here just a few days ago.”*

“Well that’s the thing. A few years back, two members of the Brotherhood held a small village in Maine hostage. They said that they would destroy it and everyone there if we didn’t allow them a good shot at a different target…us. Mento and the Chief were away on another mission but I guess the Brotherhood thought that three heroes were better than none. We told them our decision and they launched the bomb at us instead. I survived because of my armored body. Larry, the Negative Man, died. There was nothing left of him. Rita was killed too but because of her elasticy body and all, the Chief thought he could repair her. Eventually, he did, just in time for Eclipso to possess us. Steve must have heard Rita’s brain waves or something. That Mento helmet of his is pretty powerful. Pretty soon, he showed up too and I guess you guys know the rest of the story. After you guys and the others freed everyone from Eclipso, we came back here but there was already a welcome party waiting for us. Those robots? Designed by General Zahl, one of the two Brotherhood bastards that killed Larry and Rita in the first place. I figure they're the ones that messed with Steve's helmet."

“So how do we find these Brotherhood villains?” Starfire asked.

“Oh, it’s not the finding them that’s the problem. Have you ever been to Zandia?”

Actually, I just saw this and feats DO NOT count toward Duo figure availability, so no Nightwing/Starfire duo just yet. But you can have both single characters for less than the cost of the Duo, so both can still be part of the squad.

And regardless of the decision on the rules change for guest stars, new rules don't go into effect until the arc after they're introduced. HOWEVER, in this case I will use editorial fiat to allow R Robotman. I've been adding odd guests to the GLC games, it's only fair

That's okay. The duo figure is probably less effective but I just wanted to use it.
