I think the prestige packaging is a huge mistake with the Watchmen set.
Who wants the box?
When I saw the release that said "this isn't something you'll be throwing away" I thought to myself "wanna bet?"
how much did this packaging increase cost?
I know I can save $30 by not buying this at a local store, and I absolutely will. $30 is a lot of money to me. The 25 figure set is a great idea... but put them in a plain cardboard box next time~!
What he said. I buy clix to play with, not sit unopened in a box on a shelf. Keep your shiny package and drop the price.
As for the taking a beating remark, it likely means WK is losing money (or making very little) on this set after all costs (production, licensing, etc) are calculated. I'm not sure how such a remark could be taken any differently.
There are 542,000 children in foster care. Talk to your local foster and adoptive agency. You could change a life.
I ordered a Watchmen set because of the price point....I will keep what I want and sell the rest those that just want a few figs, too. I don't expect to make a profit, just to offset my cost a little.
The secondary market for singles from the set should be pretty good.

Yeah, it's definitely an unforced error. I had enjoyed some of the boxes the collector sets had come in, but it was impractical after a while to keep them all.

Well, it was a retailer's summit, so my impression was maybe retailers were telling NECA about the problems with the price, either at a booth or some presentation. That sounds more to me like something you would describe as "taking a beating" for, rather than NECA voluntarily making a risky investment.
Also, is the box made of fine Corinthian letter or something?
I say less packaging = less retail price = more likely that people will actually buy, especially given the current economy. Or at least that is my personal situation.

I'm suddenly reminded of all the blase' remarks regarding B&tB prior to its release.
I wonder how many will reverse their decisions/comments once the product has been spoiled or is in hand?
(cue: indignant reponses now)

True, some people liked the set much more once it came out, but there were still some constants. If you didn't like repaints of the same sculpts or multiple versions of the character before B&B came out, you still didn't like them once they were in hand.
If anything, there may be parallels to the Watchmen set for those same issues. People may feel the same about two Talias as they do two Silk Spectres. I know the marketing for Watchmen promises 25 "unique" sculpts, so that aspect shouldn't be an issue.
I think, at the end of the day, everyone would have been perfectly satisfied with the core 7 Watchmen as a set for $40, and it would have been a 'must buy' for most every comic enthusiast. As is, folks have to second guess just how much interest they have in it.
Not me. My main disappointment with the Invincible set is there aren't enough characters to run teams with any variety at the points we normally play (500-600). A 25-figure Invincible set would be awesome.
Same thing with the Watchmen. I want the Watchmen, the Minute Men, and any other heroes from the Watchmen universe that they can cram into the 25. Even though they are a DC property, their universe is really a stand-alone, so a theme player like me wouldn't have a lot of options with only 7 figures in the set (particularly if any of them aren't Watchmen).
I think the price point is fine. I don't care about them being in their own collector's case (they'll be placed in my Indy clix case, next to my Invincible clix), but if they have a new map, dice, etc, then I'm fine with $4 retail per figure. I'd rather pay closer to $3 (retail) per figure, but a higher price makes sense to avoid random collation and a limited run.

Yep. BatB turned out to be exactly what I thought it would be - a mediocre set. Some good dials, plays okay in sealed (though not ensuring the two parts of each AE were packaged together kills that mechanic in sealed, IMO), some decent sculpts, some really fugly sculpts, bad scale control, and not enough character variety. There are some gems in there (including a couple of the duos, and I hate duos), but every set has at least a few gems.
A year from now when people are playing BatB in constructed and have had time to digest it, I think we'll get a better feel for fan reaction...right now there's too much excitement generated by that "new car smell" to get an accurate gauge, IMO...the results are skewed up right now, just like with any set right after release. I'm expecting big things from the DC releases for the rest of this year (Edit - including the Watchmen set!); hopefully there's some improvement from BatB.

I will be buying one of the Watchmen sets. I really don't see the price tag as a problem. Yes its $100, but most places I've been are doing reduced pre-orders (Lonestar comics in Tx has it for 70 and I think Miniature Market has something similar.) For 25 figures retail on 25figures for BatB its $59.55 without tax (about $64 with tax). That's without any other goodies like an amazing packaging, map, dice, or anything else. Overall its not hard to do or price for. I think this is a great deal and I look forward to getting it.

What he and the artist had was a (then unheard of) clause that once Watchmen was "out of publication" that the rights would revert to them from DC. The rub was that Watchmen was so popular that DC has never let the Publication lapse. Moore feels this violated the spirit if not the words of the agreement.
That's because keeping a comic continually in print for 21 years was unheard of at the time, too.
Early indications are that the Brightest Day kit will cost $28 for seven figures. That's $4 per figure. $4*25=$100. Add in the anticipated lower sales volume, and then balance out the costs for the special packaging, and it makes *logical* sense.
Not really.
I can generate $30 in disposable income fairly easily.
$100 requires more planning.
That's economics.
I do cobble the money together ($109) but it brings me 50 figures. So at $109, I am paying $2.18 a figure. Watchmen at 25 x $2 should be about $50, which I would consider.
I've paid $10 for a single figure. That does not translate to me willing to pay $250 for 25 figures.
There are players who have paid 40, 50, even 100 dollars for a single figure. Surely no one would think they would be willing to pay over $1000 for something like a Watchmen set.
We'll see how it sells and I hope it does well for the company. For me, $100 is too much for what we are supposedly getting. More info would help me make a clearer choice.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
