Danny looked around at the carnage. Luke was down, but if Danny knew his friend he would be up soon requesting a hamburger and a shake. Jim ran into the buildings regrouping with the others. The black armor clad warrior walked around the crumpled bodies, double checking that they were indeed done with the fight. When he was done, he walked over to Danny and removed his helmet.
“I see from your clothing, that you must be either from the future, or from an alternate dimension. Which is it?” the man asked, clearly still tense from the battle.
Danny looked at Jim, shrugged, and answered, “We believe we are from the future I'm guessing, the year 2010. Myself and Luke over there (he was careful not to mention Shang and Paladin, this man may still turn out to be an enemy) however our place in time is different than Jim here. We think his proper time is about 70 years before ours. Who are you and where do you come from?”
“My name is Dane Whitman. I was fighting alongside a group known as the Avengers when I was lost in time. Somehow, I ended up trapped here, in the body of what I believe to be my distant relative and former Black Knight, Sir Eobar Garrington. As near as I can tell, we are stuck some time in the 12th Century,” he answered with a regal sounding tone.
Danny sighed in relief. “If you fought with the Avengers, then you are a friend. We call ourselves the Heroes for Hire. How long have you been here? And how do we get home?”
“I have not found a way to travel back to my proper time, however we cannot think about traveling home until this threat before us is eradicated,” said Dane. “These Crusaders were the mortal enemy of my people and of all humanity. If they are allowed to continue to conquer these regions, they will change the course of history forever. You see, they shouldn’t be winning according to the historical texts I studied.”
Danny remembered vaguely reading about the same thing in a historical text. Just then, Luke started to come to and propped himself up on his elbows.
“Did we win?” he asked to no one in particular.
“Just barley, but the fight isn’t over.” replied Danny. “Apparently, the battle isn’t going according to the history books and we have to intervene, regardless of the butterfly effect.”
Luke groaned and laid back down. “The fight is never over.” he mumbled.
“Let’s get moving,” ordered Black Knight, “we need to cover a lot of ground fast.”
